Munich Airport opts for eco-friendly MAN buses
Official handover of 27 MAN Lion´s City buses
At Munich´s "Franz Josef Strauss" Airport, MAN Truck & Bus has handed over nineteen articulated and eight solo MAN Lion’s City buses to AeroGround Flughafen München GmbH for its air passenger transport services. AeroGround is a subsidiary of Munich´s airport operator Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) and responsible for ground handling services. A further nineteen solo buses are scheduled for delivery by 2014.
In the presence of Ursula Heinen-Esser, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Heinz-Jürgen Löw, Director of Marketing, Sales & Services at MAN Truck & Bus AG, presented the symbolic key to the new vehicles to the Chief Executive Officer of FMG, Dr. Michael Kerkloh.
"We are proud that Munich Airport has decided in favour of buses produced by MAN. As a leading international manufacturer of commercial vehicles with our head office in Munich, buses on the runway at the local airport are a first-class visiting card," said Löw.
Reaching a new record figure of 38.4 million travelers, Bavaria´s international air traffic hub recorded a passenger increase of just under two percent in 2012. Since the airport went into operation in 1992, the number of passengers has already more than tripled. Increasing passenger volumes also lead to rising demands on transport facilities for travelers and crews between the terminals and aircraft parking positions.
The interior design of the new buses, with its heavy-duty stainless steel look, has been optimized to offer high passenger standing capacity. Effective air-conditioning guarantees a high degree of passenger comfort in all vehicles, whatever the season. A lowering device makes boarding and alighting easier for passengers. The vehicles are powered by MAN´s efficient common rail diesel engines with 235kW (320 PS), which meet with the demanding EEV emission standard. Bearing the "Blue Angel" environmental seal of approval, the MAN Lion’s City articulated buses supplied to Munich Airport offer exceptionally low levels of noise and emissions. Compared with the buses previously used at the airport, the new vehicles represent a significant improvement in terms of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions.
