The people behind the TGX D38 - Norbert Schatz

The TGX D38 is MAN’s new flagship. Many MAN employees poured all their skills and passion into developing the new truck. We introduce you to a few of them.

Pride – that is the word that best describes what ties many employees to the TGX D38. The new top-of-the range truck model is taking center stage at MAN’s trade fair appearance at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2014. The new flagship adds horsepower of 520, 560, and 640 to MAN’s range. The top model offers a customized driveline with numerous new efficiency functions. At its center is the newly developed D38 six-cylinder in-line engine with 15.2 l displacement. This engine stands for superior power and gives the TGX D38 maximum torque for all needs – without breaking any horsepower records. When it comes to this vehicle, the MAN engineers instead concentrated their efforts on reliability, efficiency, and lower operating costs.

But how much work goes into a vehicle like this? And who are the people behind the product? At MAN, several teams worked on developing the new vehicle over a few years. From development of the engine through launch of the truck – many MAN employees poured all their skills and passion into developing the new truck. That is reason enough to speak to some of them and show the team’s work. What ties them to the new vehicle? What role did their team play?

A short interview with the people behind the TGX:

Norbert Schatz
D38 Engine Project Manager

What does the new D38 engine conjure up for you?

Developing the D38 was a real team effort, with everyone doing a great job. Over the past fifteen years, I´ve worked on all major developments in the field of in-line engines and when you develop an engine, it´s always a new challenge to explore and realize novel innovations. It´s an exciting time! So having been involved in the project for so long, it was again a very powerful feeling when the D38 underwent its initial trial runs on the test stand for the very first time.

So what did your team contribute to the TGX D38?

A core team was responsible for developing the engine, made up of experts from many different fields, such as various engine and vehicle development departments, production, controlling, procurement, quality and product management. In all, around seventy people were working intensively in this team for five-and-a-half years, so that the engine could go into production.

What´s so special about the new engine?

For me, it´s special that we have managed to develop an economic engine that is highly robust and reliable, without becoming involved in the horsepower race. In our case, economic efficiency had priority, so that customers would get the best package in terms of total cost of ownership from MAN in the power output range exceeding 500 hp. The engine is impressive not because of one single technical detail, but because it incorporates many new developments, such as top-down cooling and a light cylinder head. We´re proud of this total package.
