Ultra-lightweight truck mixer chassis
MAN is extending its initiative offering concrete deliverers a truck mixer chassis with an extremely high load capacity by optimising the weight of various auxiliary units. MAN launched the lightweight hypoid tandem axle unit at bauma in 2016. They offer a weight saving of 180 kilograms compared to the previously installed 13 tonne axles. The upgrade to the new MAN D15 engine series in 2019 will reduce the chassis weight by a further approximately 230 kilograms. This means around 410 kilograms additional payload - a big gain in terms of efficient transportation.
The chassis, weighing about 8.95 tonnes, meets the approval criteria for off-road vehicles of category N3G of standard height and with 315/80 R22.5 tyres, even with these hypoid axles. For the driver and the operating company it is important that MAN has achieved this weight reduction without any sacrifice in terms of equipment specification or cab comfort.
The same payload optimisation measures will benefit companies operating MAN TGS three-axle or four-axle tippers. For those models, too, the new D15 engine and the option of the lightweight hypoid tandem axle will reduce weight by some 410 kilograms.
MAN TGE at bauma for the first time
The MAN TGE series covers the range from 3.0 to 5.5 tonnes gross train weight, adding new models at the bottom end of the MAN truck portfolio, which previously ranged from 7.5 to 44 tonnes. The MAN TGE marked its world premier in autumn 2016 at the IAA commercial vehicles show in Hanover. Since spring 2017, MAN has been introducing the van range into various European markets. The extensive product portfolio, featuring box vans, glazed combi vans and chassis units with single or crew cabs, covers a very wide range of applications in the construction industry as well as for landscaping and horticulture. The choice spans two wheelbases, three overhangs, three roof heights and three drive variants: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The 2-litre unit is available with four power ratings from 102 hp to 177 hp.
New D15 engine for MAN trucks
The new Euro 6 standard 9-litre D15 engine will be replacing the tried and proven D20 engine in the MAN TGS and TGX truck series in 2019,. The straight-six engine achieves higher power, lighter weight and better fuel efficiency, despite a smaller cubic capacity. The engine's light weight is a major benefit for sector-specific applications. The payload is increased by about 230 kilograms. The new engine design is a particular boon to transporters of bulk cargo, such as fuels, mineral oils and concrete.
With three power ratings at 330 hp (243 kW), 360 hp (265 kW) and 400 hp (294 kW), the D15 engine is positioned in the middle range between the top-end 6-cylinder D08 engine series developing 320 hp and the bottom-end D26 developing 430 hp. The cubic capacity of the straight-six engine featuring Common Rail injection is 9037 ccm, with a stroke of 145 mm and a bore of 115 mm. Traditionally MAN derives the designation of the engine from the last of those figures. The maximum torque is 1600 Nm with power output of 330 hp, increasing by 100 Nm at each power rating. A maximum engine braking power of 350 kW is available with the Turbo EVBec. The Common Rail injection system operating at up to 2500 bar injection pressure, in conjunction with demand-based control of auxiliary units helps to reduce fuel consumption.
As AdBlue fluid is readily available these days, MAN is leveraging an evolved version of the SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) combined with the self-regenerating filter system MAN CRT (Continuously Regenerating Trap) for the exhaust gas aftertreatment.
The factors that contribute to the consumption efficiency are various technical solutions for the thermal management of the engine and the engine auxiliary units. These include the warm-up and constant high exhaust gas temperature, a speed-regulated coolant pump that operates as and when required or the mechanism of the 1-cylinder air compressor.
Technical improvements and optimisations to the D26 and D38 engines
The new engine family also includes the other MAN engine series D08, D26 and D38, which in the course of 2019 will be launched on the market as Euro 6 versions. We have introduced a completely revised version of the D26. As a result, the D26 engines will have 10 hp more power and 100 Nm more torque than the previous version. So the new power ratings will be 430 hp, 470 hp and 510 hp. The optimisations have had a positive impact on profitability by increasing the payload by around 80 kilograms and reducing fuel consumption by up to four percent.
The technical improvements have now enabled the oil-change intervals in the MAN D38 engine to be increased to 140,000 kilometres – depending on usage strain.
All four engine series – D08, D15, D26 and D38 – can be operated with paraffin fuels, such as hydrogenated vegetable oils, as per EN 15940, without the need for retrospective conversions.
New driver assistance and safety systems for MAN trucks
For many years MAN has successfully offered adaptive cruise control (ACC); now the company is adding a Stop & Go feature. When first launched back in 2018, it was offered only for two-axle on-road semi-trailer tractors. During the course of 2019 it will be available for a wide range of vehicles fitted with the TipMatic12 transmission, including particularly for the MAN TGS and TGX series used in the construction sector. Within the speed range 0 to 25 km/h, the ACC Stop & Go maintains a fixed distance from the vehicle ahead, brakes to a standstill as required, and after only a brief stoppage of a maximum of two seconds starts off again automatically. If the vehicle is stopped for longer, the driver presses the accelerator or a button on the multi-function steering wheel to move off again.
This year MAN will be introducing ComfortSteering in the TGM, TGS and TGX model series featuring the new engine family. This active steering system assists the driver by adapting the steering forces to the vehicle's speed.
This system also provides the technical basis for the Lane Return Assist (LRA) feature. If the driver unintentionally drifts out of the lane without indicating, the LRA activates and guides the vehicle back into the marked lane.
Video Manoeuvring System for optimum near-side visibility
Some of the truck exhibits on the MAN stand include the VAS Video Manoeuvring System which shows the driver the blind spot on the near-side of the vehicle, so providing early detection of critical situations when turning or manoeuvring. The system assists the driver by providing vision in addition to the rear-view mirror by means of an in-cab monitor attached to the near-side A-pillar or the dash display screen, allowing a view of the blind spot area alongside the vehicle. A wide-angle camera on the near-side of the cab captures the image. The camera monitor system can be supplemented by ultrasonic sensors on the front of the vehicle and along the near-side. These provide the driver with acoustic and visual (LED display) alerts indicating obstructions.
Refurbished – all MAN trucks now with optimised interior
For the 2018 model year MAN presented a new cab interior for trucks with Euro 6 engines. In the course of 2019, all TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX series models conforming to emissions standards below Euro 6 will also be fitted with the new interior. Design, functionality and ergonomics are the focus areas.
Two modern interior colour schemes are available: “Sand” beige and “Urban Concrete” dark grey. The latter is more resilient to staining by dirty hands or oily workwear.
The main instrument panel features a clearly laid-out 4” high-definition colour screen. The displays on it are in different colours to aid readability and orientation. The central switch and control panel also has restructured functionality. Switches are grouped by function for more intuitive operation, and functions that are used frequently, such as the rotary switch for the MAN TipMatic automated transmission, are now positioned on the main control panel. The instrument panel above and to the right of the central control panel offers more storage space with integral electrical sockets and new flexible cupholders.
The repositioning of the TipMatic rotary switch also creates more space between the seats and in front of the bunk. The coolbox/storage box also contributes to this extra space, because in the long cab variant it is stowed away under the bunk. The coolbox is also larger than previously, and now has a capacity of 35 litres, with a quick cooling function and a quiet rest mode. Alternatively, a large lockable storage compartment can be provided in this location.
In the optimised rest area, the lower and (optional) upper bunks are provided with more convenient electrical controls, with switches for the internal lighting, the window lifters and the sliding roof. Four high-performance sockets (12V, 24V, USB) and a new lighting design enhance user comfort.
MAN Individual replaces Truck Modification
In spring 2019, MAN Truck & Bus is consolidating its modification operations on trucks, buses and vans under the name MAN Individual. MAN Individual’s wide-ranging and industry-specific truck modification offering comprises work to both the exterior and interior of the cab, to the chassis and to the driveline. As an optical indication of the services commissioned, the offering also comes with an MAN Individual badge, which is attached to the instrument panel in the cab. However, this is only the case if the services largely involve making visible refinements to the vehicle.

MAN Truck & Bus introduces its reworked engine family at the world’s largest trade fair for construction machines, equipment and vehicles. The D08, D26 and D38 benefit from numerous technical innovations with even better performance and efficien-cy. The MAN D15 is an entirely re-developed engine, introduced to fill a position in the middle performance segment of 330 to 400 hp.

MAN D15 – new top performer for the middle segment
The new addition to the MAN engine family is extremely versatile. The completely re-developed D15 features a nine-litre displacement (9037 cm3) and a performance range of 330 hp (243 kW), 360 hp (265 kW) and 400 hp (294 kW), and is not only exceptionally powerful, but also very light and robust thanks to its compact and simplified design. Even at low speeds, it generates between 1600 and 1800 Newton metres of maximum torque, and its excellent ratio of weight, size and consumption make it the ideal drive for weight-sensitive construction applications, medium and heavy distribution transport, as well as light long-haul transport. The D15 is therefore the perfect addition to the larger D26 in the TGS vehicle series. New computer-supported design methods and the use of different materials which are optimally adapted to the application, make the new D15 approximately 230 kg lighter compared to the previously available D20 engine, which it is replacing in the middle segment of the MAN engine portfolio in the future.
With the D15, MAN relies on exhaust gas aftertreatment based on the further developed SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) combined with the self-regenerating MAN CRT (continuously regenerating trap) filter system. This form of exhaust gas aftertreatment reduces the production of noxious NOX emissions (nitrogen oxide) to almost zero. In this context, MAN’s new engine generation is being implemented across the entire TG series, meaning that these will have a modular exhaust gas aftertreatment system. It is based on two variants which are used depending on the vehicle series: the larger is used in TGX and TGS vehicles, and the smaller exhaust gas aftertreatment system is used in the TGM and TGL series. In addition to the SCR catalytic converter, these also encompass the diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst and AdBlue fluid injection in a compact package. A shared special feature is the airless AdBlue fluid injection, which operates without compressed air, thereby contributing to overall efficiency, as well as the higher AdBlue fluid conversion rate through optimised coating of the catalytic converters.
The new Common Rail injection system in the D15 features new leak-proof injectors with injection pressures up to 2,500 bar – this atomises the fuel into an especially fine mist. Combined with the installation-space and weight-optimised cylinder head, adapted inlet and outlet channels for reduced gas exchange loss, resistant steel pistons as well as robust curved valves, this makes energy conversion in the engine especially efficient and fuel saving. The single-stage turbo charger provides optimal power delivery and very good response behaviour, allowing the powerful D15 to reach its maximum torque of 1800 Nm while still at very low speeds. When moving off, this becomes apparent through a dynamic “pick-up” feeling.
The MAN developers have also optimised thermal management in the D15. An adjustable charge air throttle valve upstream and an exhaust throttle valve downstream of the engine work together to accelerate warming up, and keep the exhaust gas temperature sufficiently high continuously for particularly effective SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment. The speed-controlled coolant pump which operates according to demand instead of constantly, the oil cooler which is also enabled according to demand, as well as the fan with speed sensors also support thermal management and contribute to consumption efficiency as well.
MAN also relies on consumption-reducing solutions in the area of engine auxiliary units. When it comes to the 1-cylinder air compressors, the customer can, depending on their operating requirements, choose between a D15 version that switches off completely if the compressed-air tank is filled, or a version that does not. The latter is lighter and has been fitted with a saving system for re-expansion. There is also a 2-cylinder version available for applications with higher air requirements, which also contributes to fuel savings through its lower power consumption in idle phases.
The fuel filter system was also reworked in the new engine generation from MAN; it now features a 2-stage design consisting of a pre-filter in the frame and a main filter at the engine. This ensures a very high level of efficiency when filtering particles out of the fuel, thereby improving the service life of the main filter as well as the effectiveness of the water separation. The new fuel filter system is also innovative in terms of the engine’s cold start capabilities at low temperatures. A new mixing valve ensures that fuel which has been warmed but not injected does not flow back to the cold tank from the Common-Rail-System; it is instead guided in a circuit. Only the amount of fuel that has actually been injected is replaced in circulation which reduces the energy needed to warm up the fuel at low ambient temperatures – this therefore improves fuel efficiency in wintery operating conditions.
Just as with the D38, D26 and D08 engines, the D15 can also be operated with paraffin fuels such as hydrogenated plant oils (i.e. synthetic second-generation biodiesel fuel) without subsequent additional conversions, in accordance with EN 15940.
For applications in the construction or large-scale distribution sectors, a powerful engine brake is part of the requirements profile. This is why MAN offers the D15 with the controlled Turbo-EVBec engine brake which delivers up to 350 kW of engine brake power in a gradual manner. This is made possible by an electronically regulated and pneumatically operated flap located upstream of the turbo charger, which allows it to build up increased counter pressure when braking. The brake output remains constant even on long downhill gradients, which is a bonus in terms of safety, especially on steep downhill gradients.
The PTO offerings for the D15 have been designed to reflect its versatility in regards to applications possibilities; there are two PTOs on the engine side for meeting all additional drive requirements typical of trucks, as standard. At the same time, the D15 offers factory preparations for attaching water-cooled 400-V/500-V alternators with a maintenance-free belt drive. Cooling units can be operated with a power of up to 30 kW with these alternators.
MAN D26: a reliable top performer is now even better and more economical up to 4 percent
In addition to the new engine family, MAN also launched a completely reworked version of their top seller, the MAN D26. This 12.4-litre six-cylinder engine will be available in the new power classes 430 hp, 470 hp and 510 hp in the future. Torque has also increased by 100 Nm to 2200, 2400 and 2600 Newton metres respectively, and is already available from a low value of 930 rpm to 1350 rpm. Numerous detail improvements ensure that the D26 is not only more powerful in its latest configuration level, but that it is also 80 kg lighter and up to four percent more efficient in terms of fuel consumption.
The improved performance is provided by the optimised combustion chamber geometry with increased compression and the simultaneously reduced EGR rate, amongst other things. This makes fuel combustion more effective, with higher peak temperatures and a generally improved degree of efficiency. The total efficiency of the engine is also supported by the following: a new leak-proof injection system with high nozzle throughflow and new injectors (for more precise injection), comprehensive measures for reducing the frictional power within the engine, as well as the reduction of gas exchange loss.
The single-stage turbo charger is essential for the characteristics of the new D26 because its high degree of efficiency offers the perfect combination between efficiency and robustness. The new EGR module is designed especially for the interplay of single-stage charging and a reduced exhaust gas recirculation rate. An electrical wastegate takes on the role of precisely controlling the charging pressure which allows for the ignition pressure to be raised to 220 bar, further reducing fuel consumption during operation. Direct intercooling also contributes to improving engine efficiency and thereby reduction of fuel consumption. It reduces the effort required during gas exchange while simultaneously improving cooling of the charge air. This means components for low-temperature cooling are no longer necessary, making the engine lighter.
Just as with the D15, the D26 also features improved thermal management. The core element in the D26 is the new electrically controlled exhaust throttle valve with position feedback. It controls the exhaust gas pressure and exhaust gas temperature quickly and precisely. Together with the regulated coolant pump, sensing of the fan speed and the optimised oil cooler with thermostat, it provides consistent thermal operating conditions for operating the engine and exhaust gas aftertreatment.
The new D26 is also equipped with a new clutch for even more driving comfort. The crankshaft has also been optimised and features a new bearing.
The D26 also benefits from the numerous optimisations within in the new engine generation. Depending on requirement, the new 1-cylinder or 2-cylinder air compressor with saving system provides additional fuel saving capabilities for the D26. The new two-stage fuel filter system and the airless AdBlue fluid injection of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system make additional contributions towards fuel efficiency.
MAN D38: top unit for extremely heavy-duty applications
The top unit of the MAN engine family was also launched at the Bauma 2019 with interesting innovations. The 15.2-litre inline-six-cylinder engine remains the same in terms of providing 540 hp, 580 hp or 640 hp. It is characterised by high torques at low speeds, generating between 2700 and 3000 Nm from 900 rpm, depending on engine performance. This supports low fuel consumption and thus lower CO2 emissions. The D38’s output data makes it particularly suitable for use in heavy-duty construction applications such as earth-moving or transporting construction machinery. Its powerful top output of 640 hp is also make it perfect for heavy-duty transportation applications and heavy-duty long-haul transport applications, both of which consistently require high levels of engine output. Just as with the new D26, the updated D38 also benefits from measures implemented on the pistons and cylinder liners for reducing friction; these again reduce wear and further improve efficiency. MAN has now also extended the oil-change intervals, depending on the individual usage strain, up to 140,000 kilometres. The D38, like the D15, also features a Turbo EVB engine brake that delivers up to 630 kW of engine braking power, gradually in conjunction with the D38. This means that in many applications, it can even replace a retarder, which decreases weight and means that the idling speed loss typical for the retarder does not occur.
As part of general optimisations, the D38 also features the innovations of the entire engine family. Depending on requirements, the new 1 or 2-cylinder air compressor with saving system provides additional fuel savings for the D38 as well. The same applies for the new two-stage fuel filter system, as well as the airless AdBlue fluid injection.
MAN D08: the expert for light-duty applications
The MAN TGL and TGM series cover a wide spectrum of application variants with their tonnage range of 7.5 to 26 tonnes. Their application areas include light-duty and medium-duty construction transport as well as city and national distribution transport, food logistics, vehicle transport, waste disposal applications of all types, all the way to municipal tasks, e.g. fire departments or emergency services. In order to meet these various requirements, drives were required which were more versatile, more robust, as well as lighter and more efficient, all at the same time. The D08 assumes this role as an all-rounder in the MAN engine family.
The D08 engine generation which was last fully updated in 2017 is receiving additional optimisations for Bauma 2019. Just as with the D38, the power classes of the D08 remain unchanged. The entry-level version of the MAN D0834 four-cylinder engine with 4.6-litre displacement produces 160 hp and provides up to 600 Nm of torque. The medium variant offers 190 hp and 750 Nm, while the most powerful version serves up 220 hp and 850 Nm. The four-cylinder version is exclusively used in MAN TGL vehicles, while the D0836 six-cylinder version with 6.9-litre displacement in the variant with 250 hp and 1050 Nm represents both the most powerful engine for MAN TGL vehicles as well as entry-level power for MAN TGM vehicles. The new D08 six-cylinder engine is available in a 290 hp version with 1150 Nm, as well as a 320 hp variant with a solid 1250 Nm of maximum torque.
Just as with the D15, the D08 exclusively uses Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for exhaust gas aftertreatment, and is likewise combined with an oxidation catalytic converter and a CRT filter.
The higher combustion temperature, which is determined by the system, is vital for good fuel efficiency, This goes hand in hand with the focus on SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment, and allows for thermodynamic efficiency to be improved.
Just as the D15 and D26, the D08 is also fitted with a single-stage turbo charger which provides the required charging pressure. In general, the new D08 engine generation impresses with a simple, robust and simultaneously light design, which has a positive effect on payload balance. Likewise, reliability and engine service life benefit from the simpler design. Additional measures contribute to the increased efficiency of the new D08 engine generation. For example, needs-based engine cooling through the regulated fan clutch in interaction with the optimised temperature sensor. The regulated and pneumatically operated exhaust throttle valve is new for the D08 engines. It improves thermal management of the engine and ensures optimal regulation of the exhaust gas temperature.
Additionally, the D08 also benefits from the general optimisations within the new engine family. This includes the new 1-cylinder air compressor with saving system, as well as the fuel-saving, the new two-stage fuel filter system, as well as the airless AdBlue fluid injection of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system
The long change interval for engine oil is an advantage for the operator; this is up to 80,000 kilometres when using engine oils approved by MAN. This being said, the display on the maintenance interval calculator is to be regarded as definitive, as the intervals may vary for individual vehicles depending on how they are used. The replacement of CRT filters also depends on the driving profile, but is required every 450,000 km at the latest.

The new, Euro 6-compliant MAN engine range for the 2019 mod-el year includes 15 power stages ranging between 160 hp and 640 hp.

MAN Truck & Bus produces four engine series for use in its trucks at its engine plant in Nuremberg. The common rail injection system is common to all MAN engines.
The D08 series spans the 160 hp to 320 hp range. The “08” in the type des-ignation indicates a bore of 108 mm. Its stroke is 125 mm. Each of the three power stages are covered by the in-line 4-cylinder and in-line 6-cylinder engines. These engines are intended exclusively for the TGL and TGM se-ries in the truck range.
The D15 engine series, newly added to the truck in 2019, is named for its bore of 115 mm. Its stroke is 145 mm. The three versions – 330 hp, 360 hp and 400 hp – are available in the TGS and TGX series.
The D26 engines series is receiving a new range of power stages for the 2019 model year, with 10 hp and 100 Nm more power. These will increase to 430 hp, 470 hp and 510 hp. The bore measures in at 126 mm, while the stroke is 166 mm. These engines are available in series including the TGS and TGX.
The D38 in-line 6-cylinder engines are reserved exclusively for the MAN TGX series. These cover the power class above 500 hp and, at 640 hp, are the most powerful engines offered by MAN for trucks. The figures for the stroke and bore are 170 mm and 138 mm respectively.

The MAN XLION is king of the road with an optional eye-catching lion design on the sides of the cab. Additionally, each vehicle features the letters “XLION” on the cab doors. The X in the name of this powerful truck stands for “extreme”.
MAN is presenting one vehicle in the XLION design at the bauma 2019 trade show. The MAN TGX 18.510 4x2 BLS tipper semitrailer tractor, with its XLION lion design on its XLX cab, makes for an eye-catching exhibit at the MAN booth in Hall B4, Booth 325. In the new Euro 6 design, the D26 engine features an additional 10 hp and 100 Nm of torque, now generating 510 hp and a maximum torque of 2600 Nm. The vehicle is equipped with the new Comfort Steering and Lane Return Assist functions.
Segment-specific equipment packages
The XLION packages offer special equipment for long-haul transport, traction vehicles and distribution vehicles, and combine factory-installed premium, segment-specific equipment with country-specific extras and service packages. The equipment has been put together so that companies benefit from added value and drivers can rest easy in the comfort of their MAN vehicles.
Since the MAN XLION was presented at the IAA in September 2018, MAN is expanding its offer to include vehicles with the new D15 engine, as well as the version with 430 hp from the D26 engine series.
The MAN XLION Traction special model will in future be available for the MAN TGS series with an engine output of 330 hp to 510 hp. The construction site package is included in addition to the MAN sound system, the LED daytime driving lights and the off-road functionality for the ABS. This means it helps to boost work safety and transport reliability. Among other things, the package contains a more dirt-resistant interior design in the Urban Concrete colour, the air deflector plate under the engine to prevent dust circulation, the driver’s side construction step with a long support rail on the roof or the stone guard on the front of the radiator.
The MAN XLION Longhaul special model is used in long-haul transport as an MAN TGX, with all engine outputs up to the top model with 640 hp. The upgrades to the visual design and comfort include comprehensive cab equipment as part of the driver comfort package, the MAN sound system, the LED daytime driving lights and chrome trim on the bumper. If required, the steel bumper is now also available as a new feature.
The MAN XLION Distribution special model is available from MAN for both the TGL and TGM series with two axles and on-road drive, regardless of the engine output and cab size. The air-conditioning system, hands-free system for mobile phones and MAN sound system give the driver added comfort – just like the MAN driver comfort package. This package includes a multi-function steering wheel, driver’s comfort seat, comfort seat covers or central locking, depending on the cab model.
In all three MAN XLION special models, MAN combines a high-quality vehicle boasting industry-specific equipment with special After Sales conditions for the Service Contract Comfort and Comfort Super maintenance contracts.
Regional, market-specific upgrades for the MAN XLION
Depending on local requirements and the model in question, the sales organisations can offer special packages for equipment, financing and maintenance. Customers can select the Style Package, Safety Package, or custom installations from the MAN Truck Modification portfolio such as a wall unit on the cab rear wall, for example.
MAN digital services as an additional benefit
All vehicles are equipped with “MAN Essentials” and “MAN ServiceCare” as standard from the MAN Digital Services offering. As well as this, the “MAN Advance” service is added free of charge for the first six months. For the same amount of time, “MAN Perform” for long-haul transport or the “MAN Compliant” service for construction and distribution transport is also available.
“MAN Essentials” forms the basis, transmitting the vehicle position at 15-minute intervals and providing the fleet manager with relevant information for vehicle analysis. With “MAN ServiceCare”, vehicle data for planning maintenance appointments and servicing work is transmitted to the relevant MAN support centre, which helps both parties – the dispatcher and the workshop – to optimally plan maintenance appointments so as to minimise MAN truck downtimes as far as possible. “MAN Advance” extends the storage period of vehicle data from MAN Essentials to 25 months, the “MAN Perform” evaluation allows an analysis of data relating to the vehicle and driver, and finally, “MAN Compliant” helps with the download and archiving of driver card and tachograph data.

MAN heavy-duty semitrailer tractors can move up to 250 tonnes gross combination weight. MAN has added the TGX 33.640 6x4 BLS to its product range for a gross combination weight of 180 tonnes. MAN will be showcasing this vehicle at its stand at the 2019 bauma – the world's leading construction machinery trade fair.

Heavy-duty and high-capacity transport requires extremely high perfor-mance. Customers demand peak values for performance and torque, con-tinuous braking power, payloads, fifth-wheel coupling load and traction as well as reliability and efficiency. The driver also needs maximum comfort. MAN offers a comprehensive product portfolio with industry-specific equipment for heavy-duty transport. The lightweight chassis and lightweight 6-cylinder in-line engines from MAN offer high fifth-wheel coupling loads and high payloads. The 640 hp MAN D38 engine and the four-axle TGX 41.640 semitrailer tractor are the top of the range, offering a gross combina-tion weight of 250 tonnes.
For heavy-duty construction machine transport: TGX 33.640
MAN is closing a gap in its product range with the MAN TGX 33.640 6x4 BLS to be showcased at the 2019 bauma. The three-axle heavy-duty semi-trailer tractor is designed for a gross combination weight of 160 tonnes and up to 180 tonnes with special approval. With MAN's most powerful en-gine, it is particularly suitable for transporting heavy-duty construction ma-chinery, construction equipment and crane accessories. The D38 series 6-cylinder engine with 15.3 litre displacement, which is only available in the TGX series, delivers 640 hp (471 kW) at 1800 rpm in its most powerful ver-sion and delivers a maximum torque of 3000 Nm at 900 - 1400 rpm.
In order to harness the tractive force on the road, MAN combines the chas-sis in normal height design with external planetary axles with a load capacity of 9 tonnes at the front and two with a load capacity of 13 tonnes at the rear. The front axle is leaf-sprung and the two rear axles are air-suspended. The MAN TipMatic 12 overdrive gearbox with retarder is equipped with the HeavyDuty shifting software for the industry-specific application. This con-tinuously calculates the current gross combination weight and selects the ideal shifting mode depending on it: for low tonnage, the long-distance mode designed for economy, and for high tonnage, the performance-related heavy-duty mode. This is based on the Offroad program in which the gears are turned at higher speeds and shifted through individually to avoid inter-ruptions in traction. The maximum engine braking power of the Turbo EVB in combination with the retarder is up to 750 kW in order to safely drive down gradients with a heavy-duty load or stop the vehicle.
MAN equips the semitrailer tractor ex works to meet the requirements of its heavy-duty transport task. The XLX and XXL cabs are available. Stainless steel storage boxes are fitted on the heavy-duty tower mounted behind it. The hydraulic system, which is primarily used to operate the semitrailer while driving, has a capacity of 30 litres/minute at 250 bar and a load sens-ing system that controls the oil flow as required.
Comprehensive MAN product range for heavy-duty transports
In heavy-duty and large-capacity transport, tractors configured specifically for the task are required, which are combined with equally special semitrail-ers and trailers. The MAN heavy-duty range in the TGS and TGX series starts with three-axle tractors with a gross combination weight of 70 or 90 tonnes. This value depends on the selected motor-gearbox combination. The last rear axle is driven in the hypoid version designed for efficiency. The leading axle is steered to optimise manoeuvrability and can be lifted during empty runs to increase efficiency.
The three-axle MAN vehicles of the TGS and TGX series, which feature two driven rear axles, are suitable for high traction and a gross combina-tion weight of up to 180 tonnes, depending on the selected drive train. In order to cover long transport distances, diesel tanks with a total capacity of 1080 litres are available on both sides of the frame for the Euro 6 version.
Two drive concepts are available where maximum traction is essential. In addition to the classic 6x6 all-wheel drive of all axles for a maximum gross combination weight of 180 tonnes, MAN also offers the model with MAN HydroDrive. Here, a hydrostatic drive in the front axle provides traction as required. The advantages include lower vehicle weight, a normal height de-sign option and lower fuel consumption. The gross combination weight is 120 tonnes. In markets outside Europe, MAN offers the TGS 6x6 all-wheel-drive semitrailer tractor in Euro 4 and Euro 5 versions with converter-clutch unit. A gross combination weight of 250 tonnes is available for heavy-duty transports or mining deployments.
The MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4 is the top of the range for a gross combination weight of 250 tonnes. The engine delivers a torque of 3000 Nm and the torque converter-clutch unit increases the torque to 4740 Nm for smooth and gentle starting processes. The continuous braking power is up to 900 kW over a wide speed range. The 580 hp D38 engine in the MAN TGX 41.580 8x4/4 can handle a gross combination weight of up to 210 tonnes. The rack behind the XLX and XXL cabs accommodates the fuel tank with a maximum capacity of 960 litres, the hydraulic fluid tank for a maximum capacity of 270 litres, the air tank, the coolant expansion tank, the auxiliary fan with heat exchanger for coolants and the converter-clutch unit as well as the storage boxes.
Industry-oriented equipment
The extensive selection list of industry-oriented, heavy-duty semitrailer trac-tor equipment includes the sliding device of the fifth-wheel coupling, the support plate at the rear frame for the gooseneck of the semitrailer, the hy-draulic system for supplying the semitrailer hydraulics, the register coupling at the front for coasting in the train configuration, the equipment with heavy-duty trailer coupling in addition to the standard coupling at the rear. In close cooperation with MAN Individual and qualified conversion partners, custom-er-specific modifications can be made to the cab equipment, wheelbase and axles.

Be it the transport of building materials in urban and non-urban areas, distribution transport or international long-haul transport – entrepreneurs, drivers and customers depend on transport tasks being completed reliably, quickly and free of accidents. MAN has been able to further develop the Lane Guard System (LGS), which has already been in use for years, and expand its range of functions to include the Lane Return Assist (LRA), based on the new MAN ComfortSteering system, which supports the driver during steering manoeuvres.
Furthermore, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with the Stop&Go function is now also available for vehicles with the TipMatic12 gearbox. This applies to most model variants from the MAN TGS and TGX series which are used in main and ancillary construction work; however, all-wheel-drive vehicles and versions with the steel bumper are not included.
MAN ACC Stop&Go and EBA2 driving assistance systems
It's all about safety when it comes to the equipment features that MAN is showcasing at bauma 2019. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is a significant asset in terms of safety and – above all – comfort. It has also been available with a Stop&Go function since 2018. This feature first appeared on the market for semitrailer tractors with the MAN TipMatic14 gearbox, and in the future will also be offered to a wide range of vehicles with the TipMatic12 gearbox.
ACC Stop&Go automatically regulates the distance from the vehicle in front at speeds of 0 to 25 km/h (including at low speeds), slows the vehicle to a stop if necessary, and automatically moves off again after short stops. This allows the driver to cruise along even in heavy traffic, traffic jams, or in urban areas, in a relaxed and stress-free manner. Additionally, the new generation of MAN ACC makes things more convenient when approaching vehicles in front, as the truck will slow down to a stop behind the preceding vehicle all by itself. If the stop lasts less than two seconds, the truck will move off again by itself. If the stop lasts longer than two seconds, the driver moves off again by pressing the accelerator or a button on the multi-function steering wheel.
The system eases the strain on the driver in heavy traffic, meaning they can navigate traffic jams with less effort. Additionally, it prevents unnecessary braking and accelerating, thereby reducing wear on the brakes and fuel consumption whilst driving.
EBA2 clearly exceeds the applicable, stricter legal requirements for emergency brake systems, which have been in place since November 2018. The sophisticated combination of data from radar and camera sensors allows EBA2 to interpret even challenging traffic scenarios more reliably, identify preceding vehicles and stationary obstacles with more certainty, and thus only activate emergency braking if required. Based on the positive experiences with this design philosophy, MAN has been installing the EBA2, as standard, without a disable button on the instrument panel since the spring of 2017 to further increase the safety offered by the system. In this situation, the driver still has total control over the system at all times.
MAN offers the EBA2 for the entire tonnage range from 7.5 tonnes and up, and, since the beginning of 2018, also for vehicles with approval in the emissions standard Euro 3, 4 and 5.
MAN ComfortSteering eases strain on drivers
During the course of 2019, MAN will be introducing MAN ComfortSteering, an active steering support system, to the TGM, TGS and TGX series with the new Euro 6 engines. An electric motor boosts the steering torque generated by the driver with a light additional torque depending on the situation at hand, thereby reducing the steering forces and making steering more precise and comfortable as a whole. Adjusted to the driving speed, the driver will experience smoother steering when performing manoeuvres, and there is also high tracking stability when driving at higher speeds.
Extra safety with MAN Lane Return Assist
If there is a risk of the vehicle leaving its lane without the driver activating the turn indicators, Lane Return Assist (LRA) will actively guide the vehicle back to its lane. In many versions of the MAN TGM, TGS and TGX series with the new Euro 6 engines, this function enhances the reliable Lane Guard System (LGS), which has been in use for years. While LGS emits an acoustic warning if the vehicle leaves its lane, LRA – available through the course of 2019 – actively intervenes, and guides the vehicle back to the area within the lane markings. The driver is still able to override the system at any time. A requirement for the system to work is that the driver must keep their hands on the steering wheel, as they are responsible for guiding the vehicle.

Despite having numerous proactive safety systems supporting them, the driver always has responsibility for the job of driving. Above all, good visibility for the driver and unrestricted ability to observe other road users are essential for this. It is difficult to see what is going on to the right-hand side of a vehicle, so if something critical is about to happen when turning, changing lanes or manoeuvring, the driver needs to alerted to this as early as possible. A camera monitor system helps the driver to see what is happening alongside the vehicle, supporting the view afforded by the rear-view and kerb mirrors. The driver is thus able to see objects such as cyclists or a smaller vehicle right next to the cab. Bollards, walls or parked vehicles become more obvious when manoeuvring. The system is activated automatically whenever the right-hand indicator is switched on. If required, the driver can also switch on the system via a switch.
On request, MAN Individual can install a camera with a 150° wide angle lens on the right-hand side of the cab near to the edge of the roof. The monitor, which measures 7 inches, is usually installed inside the cab on the passenger side A-pillar. When the driver looks to the right into the mirror, the monitor is visible in the field of vision. Alternatively, the camera signal can be played back on the 7-inch display for the Infotainment system on the instrument panel.
The camera monitor system can be equipped with ultrasonic sensors on the front and right side of the vehicle for even greater safety. These sensors register objects and other road users up to two metres away from the cab. When other road users approach, the driver receives a visual warning via LED warning lamps and an acoustic warning via a signal tone. This enables the driver to identify the potential hazardous situation in good time and respond accordingly.
This equipment can be ordered as a factory-fitted feature, though it is also possible to retrofit.

MAN ProfiDrive has devised sector-focused training courses concentrating on enhancing drivers' practical skills and improving customer focus. Since construction site vehicles consist of an MAN chassis and a tipper body or truck mixer by a body manufacturer, MAN incorporated specialists from the body manufacturers when conducting the training courses. In Germany, Meiller and Liebherr are the partners responsible for the tipper and truck mixer training courses respectively; in other countries, MAN collaborates with the partners from those countries. The training course consists of an introductory theoretical portion and an extensive practical portion in a gravel pit, sand pit or quarry.
The one-day training course demonstrates to participants what MAN vehicles can do and how they can be best deployed for their highly specific sector requirements. The objectives of the event are to reduce wear and damage and learn how to deploy and safely use all functions in line with the task at hand.
When driving off-road, the ProfiDrive trainers teach the drivers how to “read” the ground and terrain in order to safely control the vehicle. The drivers try out lock management and the switchable moving-off aids when going uphill, and focus on economical and wear-free braking when going downhill. Another practical station investigates the influence of driveline locks, the turning brake and different drive variants (from all-wheel drive to MAN HydroDrive) on steering, handling and the vehicle’s turning circle.
In the “Construction” training course, body manufacturers use presentations to explain the undesirable consequences – up to and including the vehicle tipping over – that insufficient tyre pressure and an unsuitable location and terrain can have on vehicle stability during the tipping process. As part of this, wheel load scales indicate the loading and unloading of individual tyre pairs, and laser measuring devices show the twisting of the tipper body or the tipping semitrailer. In the “Concrete” training course, experts from the truck mixer manufacturer provide detailed explanations of body functions, and highlight the dangers and consequences of incorrect operation.
Sector-focused expertise in special ProfiDrive training courses
MAN ProfiDrive is expanding its comprehensive training programme to include special sector-specific training courses. Training courses for construction site vehicles, municipal vehicles and emergency services vehicles from the fire service, timber transporters as well as liquid and gas transporters are already under way in different countries. The “Construction” training course is available in Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy, and the “Concrete” training course is available in Germany. Preparations are being made to introduce the training courses in several other countries. These training courses are recognised in Germany as part of mandatory professional driver training.

At the trade fair, MAN will be showcasing two TGE designs tailored to specific industry needs in the form of a three-way tipper and an escort vehicle for heavy haulage transport.

MAN will be exhibiting vehicles from the TGE series for the first time at Bauma. Step by step since April 2017, MAN has been introducing the TGE – its lightweight van sporting the lion emblem on its radiator grille – into a variety of European markets. The 5.5-tonne model (type designation: TGE 6.180 4x2) will be making its début with a three-way tipper body at the MAN trade fair booth in Hall B4, number 325. On show directly in front of the hall will be an MAN TGE 3.180 4x2, equipped as a heavy haulage escort vehicle (BF4).
Comprehensive product range for the construction industry
Construction firms, skilled trades businesses, horticultural and landscaping companies can all look to the sweeping TGE product range for the right vehicle to suit their wide array of needs. MAN offers a comprehensive range of body shapes with chassis and panel vans, which are also available with windows all the way around. Customers can choose between two wheelbases, three overhang variants and three roof heights. Depending on the version chosen, the 3.5-tonne models can support a maximum payload in excess of 1.5 tonnes, while the panel vans allow for a maximum cargo compartment volume of 18.4 cubic metres.
Chassis and crew cabs are available for the chassis. The crew cab can seat up to seven people, offering employees a comfortable and safe way to navigate the construction site.
The MAN TGE series starts at a permissible gross vehicle weight of 3 metric tonnes. The series tops out at 5.5 tonnes, including a rear axle fitted with twin tyres, although an additional 3.5 tonnes can be transported using a trailer coupling. The wide selection of variants enables customers to choose their preferred drive system. Depending on the permissible total weight, front, rear or all-wheel drive options are possible, with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The MAN TGE features a completely new-generation diesel engine promising high levels of durability and reliability. The 1,968 cm3 engines come in 75 kW/102 hp, 90 kW/122 hp, 103 kW/140 hp and 130 kW/177 hp variants. The V4 engine was specially developed to withstand the “rough” requirements placed on commercial vehicles over their lifetime, first and foremost for economical operation and robustness.
The MAN TGE 4x4 stands for safe progress even on unpaved surfaces. In dry weather, the van travels efficiently over the asphalt with pure front-wheel drive. The MAN TGE is torsion-free and, above all, fuel-efficient on the road. The special feature of the all-wheel drive concept: in the event of a loss of traction, the control unit reacts automatically and switches on the rear-wheel drive in 0.084 seconds. From a technical standpoint, this fast response makes the modern clutch possible, which automatically distributes the drive torque between the front and rear axles – from 0 to 100%.
MAN offers a wide range of bodies and upgrades from the factory floor for MAN TGE models to be used in the construction industry. This makes it possible to order Scattolini, Henschel and Schoon three-way tippers for the 3.5 and 5.5-tonne models. In addition, there are flexible racking systems from Bott and Sortimo available as factory-fitted features for maintenance and mobile workshop vehicles.
If building work is halted in the winter due to adverse weather, the MAN TGE can be used for winter service operations – for instance, by fitting a mounting bracket for a snow plough. Meanwhile, there is room for a gritter in the loading area.

Production of the largest tipper in the TGE series started in autumn 2018. The distinguishing features of the MAN TGE 6.180 to be exhibited at the trade fair include a top-of-the-range engine, 6-speed manual gearbox, twin tyres on the leaf-sprung rear axle, a three-seat single cab and a Meiller three-way tipper.
And there will be an MAN TGE 3.180 with striking sulphur-yellow paintwork on display at MAN’s outside booth next to Hall B4. The model’s overall appearance and its roof equipped with a variable-message sign system indicate its potential use as an escort vehicle for large-capacity and heavy-haulage transport vehicles (type BF4). In the three-seat panel van, interior fixtures and fittings have been added to store the barrier equipment and measuring instruments that need to be transported. The vehicle underwent modification at Kustech’s plant in Techau, near the North German city of Lübeck.
Maximum safety thanks to assistance systems
The Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) fitted as standard in the TGE is a major contribution to road safety on the part of MAN. Distance sensors monitor critical distances from the vehicle ahead and help to reduce the vehicle’s stopping distance. In addition, the integrated City Emergency Brake automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds. This reduces the risk of rear-end collisions, one of the most frequent causes of accidents, minimising off-road times and repair costs, as well as boosting the vehicle’s residual value. The optional Reversing Assist helps when manoeuvring out of parking spaces. A trailer manoeuvring assist feature can also be activated as required. The electromechanical power steering compensates for countersteer forces such as those created by side winds. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) ensures high levels of comfort on lengthy motorway stretches. The drowsiness detection function and the multi-collision brake enhance safety for everyone. This multi-collision brake prevents secondary collisions with other obstacles or road users in the event of an accident.

This statement summarises precisely what MAN TGE stands for in the heavy-duty escort segment. At the bauma trade fair (Munich, 8th – 14th April), the commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus will exhibit a TGE with a BF4 conversion by company kustech Systeme, from Techau near Lübeck, Germany.
BF4 stands for the 4th generation of support vehicles – these vans are designed to secure bulk and heavy-duty transport from the front, primarily on country roads and in cities, and to warn traffic approaching from the side. For this reason, the variable traffic sign system that will be installed on the roof of the vehicle must swivel by 360 degrees. At junctions, this allows the BF4 driver to warn intersecting traffic with one of the eleven available traffic signs. On motorways, heavy-duty transports are secured by BF3 and BF3plus vans; the two versions are differentiated primarily by the number of available traffic signs. They secure the transport towards the rear. Thanks to the swivelling variable traffic sign system, a BF4 vehicle can be used as a BF3plus on the motorway.
Since 2015, the specification sheet issued by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure has specified that the vehicles may not feature any company or product advertising. In addition, BF4s must always be sulphur yellow and have four side marker lights on each side. The escort vehicles must be equipped for additional wind loads when the BF4 traffic sign system is erect at speed of at least 80 km/h. kustech equips the MAN TGE so that the standard driving properties of the vehicle are guaranteed – for example, via monitoring of the driving dynamics and the standard speed warning. With the BF4 Premium variable traffic sign system, it can even achieve 120 km/h.
The MAN TGE is especially well-suited for conversion into a BF4. For example, the roof is strong enough to support the approx. 200 kg variable traffic sign system. With 300 kg of roof load, the TGE is part of an elite group: Only three models on the market currently achieve this value.
What’s more, the MAN TGE offers a wide range of special equipment, enabling the customer to tailor their heavy-duty escort vehicles to their exact requirements. For example, the suspension and stabilization can be reinforced, and the front axle load increased to 1,800 kg. The crosswind assistant and emergency brake assistant ensure safety on board. MAN can also supply a powerful cycle stable secondary battery for frequently used interior fittings, such as the monitor, microwave and refrigerator. The vast majority of BF4 vehicles will be supplied with interior fittings for the driver. This includes a place to sleep, so that support drivers can rest immediately after the arrival of the heavy-duty transport, which usually takes place at night or in the early morning hours.
In addition to powerful 2.0-litre TDI engines with up to 177 hp and an optional 8-speed automatic gearbox, the TGE also offers the choice between front, rear or all-wheel drive, as well as a tight-knit service network.
