Full range – MAN presents its new van and truck products for 2018
The well-established, Munich-based company is expanding its selection, becoming a full-range provider. The light commercial vehicles with the lion emblem on their grille have fully rounded off MAN’s product portfolio since April this year. This will expand future business to include transport tasks involving permissible gross weights between 3 and 44 tonnes. Offering a large number of new items in the various truck series, MAN will begin life as a one-stop supplier in 2018.

The time-honoured, Munich-based brand is entering the van world for the first time with the new MAN TGE. Production has been underway since April and official sales started only a month earlier, branching MAN’s established, customer-focused truck business out into the light commercial vehicle market. The new addition impresses with its variety of models, including the closed panel van, combi with windows, and vehicle chassis with single and crew cabs, all of which enhance the range of body designs. A permissible gross weight of 3 to 5.5 tonnes and efficient, robust 102 to 177 HP engines make this the ideal light transportation solution in construction, skilled trades, passenger transport and for assorted applications in distribution logistics. Via the Vans to Go scheme, MAN is introducing its line of complete, instantly available, direct-from-factory vehicles along with attachments for the TGE range for the first time in Barcelona.
Among the innovations in the medium-duty truck sector, MAN TGL and TGM are now on the move with a new engine featuring new power stages. The new MAN D08SCR generation of engines excels with its simpler design and exhaust gas aftertreatment based solely on Selective Catalytic Reduction technology. This expands the range of applications while easing maintenance and strengthening overall reliability. MAN has also managed to further reduce the new unit’s consumption by 5.5 percent. The TGL and TGM can also boast added driving comfort and efficiency thanks to new functions for the TipMatic gearbox. Inside the cab, the workplace experiences an additional upgrade with new controls, making it more driver-friendly.
While the new interior design primarily takes shape around the workplace in the short C and M cabs, drivers will also benefit from a redesign of the living area in the long L, LX, XL, XLX and XXL cabs, which are chiefly used in the MAN TGX and TGS. The living area changes include new storage and lighting features as well as a new retractable fridge, located fully underneath the resting bunk. All the important comfort functions can be controlled via a new operator control concept. In addition, the TGX series ensures restful sleep with an acoustic package that markedly further reduces the noise levels in the cab via extensive insulation measures.
MAN has equipped the new Adaptive Cruise Control variant with a Stop-and-Go function to prevent driver fatigue as far as possible on congested roads and in sluggish traffic situations. This automatically regulates the distance from the vehicle in front (including at low speeds), slows the vehicle (to a stop if necessary) and automatically moves off again after short stops. This way, the driver can relax and enjoy the ride free of stress, even in stop-and-go traffic.
Every new truck in Europe that has our lion emblem on the grille and meets the Euro 6 standard is equipped with a RIO Box as of August, allowing customers to keep running their logistics processes as smoothly as possible with their MAN. This works as a technical interface to provide access to RIO, the new digital offering from Volkswagen Truck & Bus. In adding this, MAN is laying the first building block for an infrastructure whose services will be able to connect the entire transportation and logistics sector in the future. By means of RIO’s cloud-based technology solution, customers will soon be able to access their fleet’s vast range of data in a central location and use a variety of services from the transport and logistics sector.

The TGE Shuttle is the first van product that MAN is rolling out from its quality in-house custom manufacturing plant, the BMC (Bus Modification Centre). The TGE Shuttle enables MAN to cater to hotels, taxi companies and limousine services, which often transport VIPs or small groups.

MAN is pooling its expertise in the bus world at the BMC to find tailored solutions for individual needs. The Centre has a wide remit, encompassing exclusive special-purpose vehicles like team buses, special buses for applications in the justice system or libraries, as well as buses for specific customers like presidents or pop stars. Customers can be offered one-stop, turnkey solutions for their specific requirements by way of the BMC. As such, the Bus Modification Centre’s work starts where the series portfolio ends.
A custom back seat style is a central feature of the dark-tinted MAN TGE. The set of changes is based on a special floor with recessed seat rails. By means of a quick-locking mechanism, each occupant’s seat can be fitted and adjusted on these rails to suit the group numbers being transported, without the need to use a tool. Integrated three-point seatbelts on each seat allow adjustment for the occupant’s personal seating position, ensuring a comfortable ride. Passengers enter their area through a sliding door that opens and closes electrically. They can embark and disembark easily and conveniently thanks to the spacious door opening (around 1.3 metres wide and more than 1.8 metres high) and the footstep which extends and retracts electrically. This can be controlled by the driver pressing a button or by simply pulling the door handle. Pleasant temperatures are ensured during the trip with the thermal and sound insulation that is also installed in the vehicle behind the side trim and pillar trim panels, as well as an additional heat exchanger.
The MAN TGE Shuttle is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, with the option of a 6-speed manually operated gearbox or 8-speed automatic gearbox. Whatever the drive system, a four-cylinder diesel engine with different power outputs is available. Efficiency and robustness came first and foremost in its development. The 1,968 cc engines are offered with 75 kW/102 hp, 103 kW/140 hp or 130 kW/177 hp.

The new TGE sees MAN transferring all its usual customer oriented services from the truck business into the transporter class. In the process, the best solution for the customer always remains the main focus. Specially trained and schooled staff is available to provide a competent point of contact. Years of experience and smooth integration with various body manufacturers is as much a matter of course as the close cooperation with the respective corporate customers. The cooperative teamwork between customers, body manufacturers, Sales and Service, thus results in the creation of a vehicle which offers the highest utility value throughout its service life. In terms of target groups, MAN is mainly focusing on the logistics and construction sector, but industry-specific requirements from the skilled trades and passenger transportation are also future areas of application for the lightweight "truck" from MAN Truck & Bus. Common features in all applications: With the lowest cW value of 0.33, the lowest fuel consumption in its class and low repair and maintenance costs, the new MAN TGE impresses with the best total cost of ownership (TCO).
Plenty of space and high load capacity
In addition to the closed delivery van and utility wagon with windows, the selection of vehicle bodies is increased with the addition of chassis with single and crew cabs. Of course, the latter can also be ordered ex works with a wide variety of configurations. For the new MAN TGE, there are two wheelbases, three roof heights and three vehicle lengths to choose from. The vehicle lengths for the closed delivery vans range from 5,983 mm to 6,833 mm and even up to a 7,388 mm long MAN TGE with large overhang. The vehicle heights are estimated at 2,340 mm, 2,575 mm, and 2,800 millimetres. The corresponding combination results in a maximum load volume of 18.4 cubic meters. Standard equipment: an LED-lighted bright interior cargo space. The entry-level MAN TGE starts at 3.0 tonnes permitted total weight – with the upper end of the range being 5.5 tonnes. An additional 3.5 tonnes can be added via a trailer coupling. The maximum payload provided by the 3.5 tonne vehicle is extraordinary. In an ideal scenario, it can carry up to 1.5 tonnes of cargo.
Versatility and efficiency in the powertrain
The range of available powertrains is equally extensive. Depending on the permitted total weight, there is a choice between front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, all of which can be coupled with either a 6 gear manual transmission or an 8 gear automatic transmission. With the MAN TGE, a whole new generation of diesel engines is born. It had its debut a good year ago in the globally renowned and successful Volkswagen Transporter, and thus once again embodies long service life and reliability. In addition, the four-cylinder was specially developed with a view to the "hard" requirements of the life of a commercial vehicle. Economy and robustness are at the forefront here, two features which the MAN TGE now combines into a true virtue and promises new optimum economic and ecological values. The range of the 1,968 cm3-large engines comprises versions with 75 kW/102 HP, 90 kW/122 HP, 103 kW/140 HP and 130 kW/177 HP.
Convenience and everyday usefulness in the interior
Behind the steering wheel, the typical commercial vehicle work place is transformed into a true living space in the TGE. Numerous well-thought-out shelves and racks support the driver in his everyday tasks. The driver's seats, available in four different designs, offer ideal padding and shape for optimal long-distance comfort that leaves no wish unfulfilled. Abrasion-resistant proven covers from the truck series guarantee a long service life.
Highest security with assist system
With the standard EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), MAN makes an essential contribution to traffic safety. Distance sensors serve to check critical distances from the vehicle ahead and help to shorten the stopping distance. The integrated city EBA function also automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds, thereby reducing one of the most frequent causes of accidents, minimizing downtime and repair costs, and increasing the residual value.
The optional backing up assist helps in situations such as leaving a parking spot. Furthermore, a trailer manoeuvring assist function can also be activated as required. The electromechanical power steering compensates for countersteering forces, such as those that result from crosswinds.
The distance-regulated cruise control ensures a high level of comfort on long stretches of motorway. The fatigue recognition and the multicollision brake increase the overall level of safety: the latter can prevent a subsequent collision with other obstacles or road users.

Furthermore, the new series benefits from the professional service offered by MAN: This is known for its uncomplicated help even without an appointment at the workshop, its fast help for weekend and night-time emergencies, as well as the extensive opening hours. With the TGE, MAN introduces a light commercial vehicle that is set to impress seasoned heavy truck users who have long been working with its big brothers Over the past few years, the European market for light commercial vehicles has seen both a steady rise in registration figures and a gradual expansion of product ranges. Growth rates of around 10% are forecast for the next three years in the C/D segment (maximum gross weight 3.0 to 6.0 tonnes) in Europe alone. The main factors behind this rise in the popularity of large transporters are likely to include the boom in online shopping, universal registration requirements, the harmonisation of driving licence regulations, the wide variety of potential uses and the fact that they behave and handle like a car. Not to mention the attractive design and the almost unlimited number of different configuration options for these vehicles. Key markets for the MAN TGE will include not only German-speaking countries, but also southern and south-western Europe. Most notably the traditionally strong Italian and French markets, for which statistics have shown annual registration figures for new C/D-segment vehicles of more than 120,000 in the past few years. Not to forget the Benelux countries and the United Kingdom, however, where the market for light commercial vehicles is constantly expanding and current sales figures likewise exceed 120,000. Similarly high figures are also forecast for Germany. A wide range of power train options ensures that MAN can meet a vast variety of customer needs. Depending on the selected drive train, four versions delivering between 75 kW / 102 HP and 130 kW / 177 HP are available, based on a standard two-litre engine. This means that three engine variants each (with overlaps) are available for rear-wheel and front-wheel drive. For the all-wheel drive version of the new MAN TGE, there are two power output options available.

Engines
The MAN TGE is powered by a completely new generation of diesel engines which made their debut just over a year ago in the successful and world-renowned Volkswagen Transporter, and thus once again stand for reliability and long service life. Furthermore, the turbo-charged four-cylinder with intercooler has been specially developed to meet the heavy and varied demands placed on light commercial vehicles (not least in terms of journey length). Priority was given to making the vehicles as economic and robust as possible, with a construction designed for minimum mileages of several hundred thousand. The MAN TGE makes a virtue of these characteristics by setting new records both economically and ecologically. The 1,968 cm3 diesel engines come in four different versions: 75 kW / 102 HP, 90 kW / 122 HP, 103 kW / 140 HP and 130 kW / 177 HP, delivering torques of 280 Nm, 300 Nm, 340 Nm and 410 Nm respectively. They consume between 6.7 and 7.0 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, making them the vehicles with the lowest consumption levels in the segment. Resulting CO2 emissions range between 175 and 184 g/km. Exhaust gas cleaning in accordance with Euro 6 is achieved by means of an SCR catalytic converter which draws AdBlue from an 18-litre tank. Around 0.15 litres of the reactant is consumed on average per 100 kilometres.
Drive system
Depending on the intended use of the vehicle, customers can choose between three different drive systems. First on the list is a front-wheel drive option, which is standard issue in this segment. Compared to the real-wheel drive version, the load compartment floor is around 100 mm lower, resulting in a lower loading sill and thus offering the largest loading volume in the entire MAN TGE series of around 18 m3. Another advantage is the compact drive unit of the transverse engine and gearbox, which lowers the tear weight and thus increases the maximum achievable payload for chassis of this type. The front-wheel drive version boasts a maximum gross weight between 3.0 and 4.0 tonnes.
The same can be said for the all-wheel drive version: due to the identical design of the forebody, the maximum gross weight again sums up to 4.0 tonnes, allowing the van to carry payloads of around 1.35 tonnes. The advantages of the 4x4 in terms of traction are obvious. The all-wheel drive is ideally suited for applications that require work to be carried out off the beaten track, or for countries or regions with mountainous ascents and descents or heavy winter snowfalls.
The rear-wheel drive versions are built to handle heavy loads. Unlike the other vehicles in the series, their maximum gross weights range from 3.5 to 5.5 tonnes, a figure achieved due to its conventional drive design with longitudinal engine and gearbox. The real-wheel drive ensures superior handling of load distribution, which makes them particularly suitable as a tractor vehicle in operation with trailers. The 3.5-tonne vehicles distribute power using an open differential with single tyres, whereas the heavier 5.5-tonne vehicles have twin tyres to ensure adequate traction with less surface pressure. This is a particular advantage on loose and unpaved surfaces. Finely tuned axle ratios also ensure ideal power delivery regardless of the gross train weight.
Depending on engine type, customers can choose between a six-gear manual gearbox or an eight-gear automatic gearbox. The high number of gears allows for smaller transmission steps, which has a distinctly positive effect on consumption and handling - the large transmission-ratio spread means that the diesel engine delivers exceptional efficiency at all revs without losing pulling power. The eighth gear was designed as a low-rev, fuel-saving overdrive gear, while the shortened first gear facilitates moving off with full loads or in operation with trailers. Both gearboxes can also be used in combination with the all-wheel drive version and a differential lock is available as an optional extra for the rear-wheel drive vehicles. A mechanical PTO with an output of up to 40 kW can be used in connection with the longitudinal gearbox of the rear-wheel driven MAN TGE (see also Bodies and Equipment).
Chassis
The chassis of the new MAN TGE with its independent wheel suspension at the front (McPherson struts) and rigid rear axle with leaf springs is yet to meet its match in the transporter segment. Safe and easy handling and outstanding car-like driving characteristics were top of the list of priorities at all times during development. As a result, the front-wheel, all-wheel and rear-wheel drive versions of the MAN TGE are all remarkable in terms of their dynamics and driving stability, even at maximum load. A variety of progressive spring characteristics and leaf spring bearings (up to three), stabilisers on both axles and a high-rigidity frame and bodywork also make the vehicles safer to handle. The single-tyre model has a wheel size of 235/65 16 C, while the twin-tyre model has a wheel size of 205/75 16 C. Other tyre and rim sizes can also be ordered upon request.
The vehicles feature electromechanical steering, which imparts extraordinarily agile handling and is a prerequisite for many different safety and comfort functions in various driver assistance systems. Active steering intervention, as used in self-parking systems, is just one example of a feature which requires the steering system to be decoupled from the engine. Electromechanical steering also consumes less energy than conventional systems in which the servo pump is running continuously, thus saving fuel and reducing CO2 emissions. The front-wheel drive version boasts an outstanding 13.6 m turning circle with a wheelbase of 3,638 mm.

The new MAN TGE sets maximum design standards in the light commercial vehicle segment. Although functionality and cost effectiveness were a priority in the development process, the design of the chassis is not lacking in dynamics and elegance, without forfeiting robustness and strength. Concave surfaces effortlessly give way to convex surfaces, combined with clearly defined lines to produce a contemporary and exclusive look.

The masculine appearance of the front is counterbalanced by the harmonious outlines of the new MAN TGE. Even the name TGE (Trucknology Generation Express) reflects the successful symbiosis of functionality and appearance. Despite its primary intended purpose being the transport of goods, the dynamic lines of the chassis with a cd value of 0.33 evoke impressions of agility and speed combined with low consumption. The eye-catching radiator grille and trapezoidal headlights (optionally with LEDs) not only embody the MAN identity, but also translate the Express theme into the resilient and powerful design vocabulary of a commercial vehicle. Furthermore, the engine power and gross train weight of the MAN TGE clearly marks its relation to its big brothers.
This is also true for the driver's workplace of the TGE, with ergonomic functionality being the highest design priority. All of the switches and control elements are within comfortable reach of the driver's seat, making it easy to handle the demands of a busy working day. Not only does this promote a high level of comfort but also contributes to the overall safety, since only well-rested and relaxed drivers can respond quickly to sudden emergencies.
Driver and passenger compartment
Getting into the driver and passenger compartment couldn't be easier. The large door opening and multiple angles at which the door can be held open mean that the actual ascent into the cab is free from obstacles. The multi-stage door check has been deliberately designed to ensure that all drivers, no matter how tall, can easily reach the door handle from the driver's seat. Overall, the cab offers an abundance of space and room for movement, even if the driver is accompanied by one or two passengers.
Behind the steering wheel of the TGE lies anything but the standard workplace of a commercial vehicle. Contributing to this is the driver's seat which is available in four different versions. Its special padding and shape provides secure lateral support as well as high levels of comfort for long-distance driving. Anti-wear seat covers which have already proven their worth in other MAN trucks guarantee durability. The first upgrade from the Standard seat is the Comfort seat. In addition to the usual seat adjustment options, it offers lumbar support, adjustable height and angle for the seat cushion as well as an armrest towards the middle of the vehicle. The Comfort Plus seat offers an extra armrest towards the outer side of the vehicle and a more extensively adjustable electric lumbar support. The ultimate in sitting comfort is delivered by the most exclusive seat configuration available, shaped by our years of experience in the truck industry. In addition to all the adjustment features mentioned above, Comfort Top seats feature air suspension and optionally available seat heating. A two-seater bench for the passenger side is available upon request and can optionally be supplied in a Comfort version including a footlocker and folding backrest. The latter also features a cup holder and a small tray on the back to accommodate snacks en route.
The sitting position in the new MAN TGE leaves nothing to be desired in terms of ergonomics and posture. This is achieved in particular by the steeply angled, easy-grip multi-spoke steering wheel, which can be adjusted vertically as well as axially. A steering wheel with multifunction buttons is available as an optional extra, allowing various electrical devices and communication media such as the radio, navigation system and hands-free system to be operated and turned on and off without letting go of the steering wheel. In addition, a heated steering wheel is also available for particularly cold countries. The drop arms allow for intuitive operation of various functions, including the indicator, windscreen wiper (on/off and intervals) and dipped headlights. Drivers will find it particularly convenient that they just need to tap the indicator stalk lightly in order to make the indicators flash three times. The on and off switch for the headlights is located to the left of the steering column, while the switch for the beam regulator is located to the right. The narrow A-columns and the ideally dimensioned exterior mirrors with extra blind spot mirrors provide the driver with an excellent all-round view.
The large, easy-to-read and elegantly formed circular instruments are typical of MAN vehicles. An each generously sized speedometer and tachometer and two integrated fuel and coolant temperature displays ensure that the driver is always kept up-to-date about the status of the vehicle. Information such as distance travelled, time, range or outside temperature, as well as graphical information for the various driver assistance systems is shown on a central display which is fitted between the two dials as series standard.
The distinctive and attractive flair also continues in the rest of the cab. Premium quality, soft-touch materials are used for all of the panels. The cab roof lining creates a homely atmosphere, while at the same time providing effective insulation against outdoor temperatures and sounds. The distinctive design of the horizontally partitioned instrument panel, which also continues in the door liners, and the central clustering of the infotainment system in the subtly shaped middle console emphasize the high-quality and no-nonsense character of the MAN TGE. The controls for the various audio systems and the heating, ventilation and optional air-conditioning systems take centre stage. All of the operating elements impress with their user-oriented design, functionality and haptic properties.
The fact that customers can configure vehicles to their precise specifications puts MAN far ahead of the competition. In practical terms this means that the basic factory version of the vehicle includes only what is absolutely necessary and expected as standard for a vehicle of this class nowadays. All other features can be added as individual orders or packages, ensuring that every vehicle achieves the best possible TCO for its owner. However, even the standard version of the MAN TGE driver's cab provides everything you need for a safe, relaxed and stress-free driving experience, including not only remote controlled central locking, but also electric windows and thermal glazing. It goes without saying that coat hooks, cup holders and a wide range of compartments for everyday essentials, as well as 12-volt sockets with and without cigarette lighters, are fitted in each vehicle as a matter of course. Digital tachographs are also fitted as standard in vehicles with a maximum gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
Storage and stowage space
The storage concept in the MAN TGE is a textbook example of how design can be used to meet the overarching goal of making life easier for the driver of a commercial vehicle. Whether we're talking about work equipment, such as yardsticks or other tools, travel documents such as maps and freight papers, or drinks and snacks for the road - the MAN TGE has space for everything and everything has its place. Upon first opening the doors, the view falls on generously sized door compartments that can accommodate 1.5 litre drinks bottles, folders and road maps and are easily accessible before even entering the vehicle. Also stored inside the doors are the first aid kit and warning triangle. The vehicle tool kit is located in a space-saving but easy-to-access compartment under the floor panel in the passenger footwell.
The surfaces of the instrument panel are also consequently used for the incorporation of various storage options. Large open compartments are positioned on the driver side as well as the passenger side and in the centre. The upper compartment is partitioned by a cup holder on the left as well as on the right and a standard 12 V socket enhances the functionality of the storage compartment on the driver side as part of the series standard. On another level below the instrument panel are an additional two cup holders at the height of the corresponding A-columns, a yardstick holder and a tray for small parts, as well as an optional 12 V socket on the driver's side.
An ashtray and an additional 12 V connection are located on the centre console to the right of the gearstick. The glove compartment in the passenger footwell comes with an optional lock and opens downwards. The opening mechanism is positioned on the left-hand side so that it can also be reached by the driver. This compartment is also large enough to hold a 1.5 litre drinks bottle, and if the vehicle is fitted with an air-conditioning system, it has its own air outlet nozzle so that it can be kept cool.
The well thought-out storage concept of the MAN TGE also becomes evident in the generously proportioned storage spaces above the windscreen. They can accommodate large items weighing up to several kilograms and even A4 folders. A slight forward incline and a sturdy edge with a height of around 3 cm stops items from falling out when the vehicle accelerates. The fasteners of the roof storage simultaneously serve as solid hand grips, whereas the centre is dominated by an integrated roof console which houses the interior lighting with additional reading lamps and the associated push buttons. Depending on the vehicle configuration, it also accommodates various other functions such as a glasses holder and switches for operating optional features.
The crew cab version of the MAN TGE merits particular attention. The crew cab is available in a six or seven seat variety with four doors as series standard (rear doors with vent windows) and comes in both wheel base sizes. The passenger compartment is generally equipped with a four-seat bench. Three-point seat belts, height-adjustable headrests and a large and highly functional storage area below the bench are fitted as standard, together with two coat hooks. An additional heater unit below the co-driver's seat supplies extra warm air to the passenger compartment.

The new MAN TGE is a versatile light commercial vehicle with the right body type for almost any transport task. Across a total of three vehicle lengths and the same amount of variable roof heights, the TGE comes in five gross weight ratings: 3.0, 3.5, 3.88, 4.0 and 5.5 tonnes. Together with the available axle ratios and different drive systems (rear-wheel, all-wheel and front-wheel drive), a multi-dimensional portfolio is created from which different industries can select their own bespoke MAN TGE.

The multifaceted character of the MAN TGE already shows in its various available body types. They include the traditional closed delivery van with a normal, high and extra high roof which provides an impressive total volume of up to 18.4 cubic metres. This tallest MAN TGE model comes to a height of 2.8 metres and is available in lengths of 5.98 metres, 6.83 metres and 7.39 metres. Vehicles from the utility wagon range are slightly smaller, available exclusively with a normal or high roof, meaning that these MAN TGEs measure either 2.35 metres or 2.59 metres in height. The closed single-tyre bodies measure 2.04 metres in width, excluding exterior mirrors. The range of basic models is completed by a variety of chassis in single- or crew cab versions. Upon request, they can be fitted with an aluminium flatbed, a tarpaulin and roof bows as standard. A back-to-back cab model will also be available in future.
Depending on the installed fittings and the gross weight rating, the MAN TGE is able to handle a considerable payload. For example a 3.5-tonne closed delivery van with a short wheelbase and normal-height roof can shoulder an impressive 1.5 tonnes. For heavier models, this number increases even further, with the load bearing capacity of the single-cab chassis weighing in at around 3 tonnes. However, even the closed delivery van offers an impressive loading volume. Depending on the drive system, its capacity ranges from 9.3 to a load-hungry 18.4 cubic metres, covering a host of different transport needs. Depending on the body length, the floor space in the hold of the new MAN TGE can accommodate objects measuring between 3.45 and 4.85 metres, whilst at the same time ensuring easy access. The high-roof and extra-high-roof models, which offer a height of 1.96 metres and 2.19 metres respectively, provide comfortable headroom. The model with a normal height roof is the only one with a slightly lower ceiling, still offering a standing height of 1.72 metres.
With its range of possible tonnages and spacious dimensions, the MAN TGE is also suitable for companies that have previously relied on 7.5-tonne trucks. Here the MAN heavy goods transporter particularly impresses with its comfortable and ergonomic driver's cab as well as lower purchase and operating costs. Not to forget: depending on the gross weight rating, driving restrictions at certain times of the day and general speed restrictions become obsolete. In addition, the TGE is comparatively easy to load. The clear loading width of the sliding door measures a good 1.3 metres, meaning that two adjacent euro-pallets can be loaded lengthwise at the same time.
The two rear doors also allow generous access to the hold, with a standard fitted handle on the right-hand D-post facilitating entry for the driver. In models with a high or extra high roof, the aperture height of the tailgate measures a respectable 1.84 metres. In addition to the standard sliding door on the right-hand side, the vehicle can also be fitted with a sliding door on the left upon request. The rear doors are optionally available with 250 degree opening which allows for easier loading and unloading on ramps and in tight spaces. Another convenient feature is the large load-through width between the wheel housings, measuring 1.38 metres in single-tyre models and 1.03 metres in twin-tyre models. This means that there is not only ample space for loading, but also for a variety of fixtures and fittings.
The hold or loading bed of the MAN TGE can be fitted with a variety of different flooring options. Upon request, utility wagon models are available with synthetic rubber flooring, whilst the closed delivery van range can be equipped with multi-ply plywood flooring with anti-slip screen-printed surface. This flooring is fixed to the vehicle with bolts, meaning that it can be easily removed for replacement or during the installation of specific equipment. Total flexibility is provided by the optionally available universal flooring which contains special connection points suitable to accommodate cabinet units from major manufacturers. This means that a variety of additional units can be installed and existing storage systems can be used in multiple ways. Optional built-in longitudinal and transverse rails as well as lashing rails at sill height and below the roof frame enable versatile and easy securing of loads. The hold comes with LED lighting as standard.
Depending on the model and engine type, a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes is possible. The maximum permissible gross train weight amounts to 8 tonnes. Suitable to their field of application, every MAN TGE is ready equipped for the installation of a trailer coupling. This means that cost-efficient retrofitting is possible at any time, whether with a ball-and-socket or bar coupling. The roof of the TGE offers ample room for additional cargo, with the maximum possible load amounting to 300 kilograms for models with normal roof height and 150 kilograms for models with high roof. The roof load capacity for single and crew cab versions comes to 100 kilograms.
Special bodies and attachments
MAN has long made it a tradition to closely collaborate with body manufacturers and producers of various attachments. Since standard features of commercial vehicles often do not fulfil all necessary customer requirements, a large proportion of all transporter vans are sent for customisation after purchase. Only then do they become suitable for their specific application in industries such as construction, municipal operations, logistics or emergency services. With the introduction of the MAN TGE, MAN is now significantly simplifying this procedure from a customer perspective. The TGE presents a comprehensive solution from MAN: one sales negotiation, one financing offer and one sales contract – everything locally and from a single source.
The company is currently working with leading vehicle body manufacturers to draw up plans for bespoke industry solutions for tippers, transportation cases, refrigerated vehicles and mobile workshop vehicles. In addition to the basic vehicles, a chassis with a driver's cabin, a crew cab or a bulkhead cab without rear wall will also be available. For industry-specific chassis, MAN also offers the TGE as a back-to-back cab only.
The MAN TGE is offered with a large range of power take-offs to suit its different intended purposes. For example, two autonomous auxiliary units such as a hydraulic pump and a power generator or air-conditioning compressor can simultaneously be powered by the engine. The durability of the poly-v belt required for this purpose is adjusted to the service life of the engine. In rear-wheel drive models, it is possible to connect a side PTO (power take off) system to the manually operated gearbox (ML 410). Its maximum continuous power stands at 28 kW (38 HP). Even more power can be realised in conjunction with an oil cooling system, in which case up to 40 kW (54 HP) are achievable at around 2300 rpm.
Thanks to the CAN databus technology that ensures information exchange between the control units, the MAN TGE offers an electronic interface (Commercial Vehicle Gateway) which allows body manufacturers to customise fixed settings for various control functions of the vehicle. In the case of a three-way tipper, the following features could for example be automatically initiated at the beginning of the unloading process: activation of the hazard lights and the warning signal for surrounding traffic, adjustment of the idling speed of the engine, muting of the radio and reduction of the top speed to walking pace. In addition, the driver can also launch and control certain vehicle functions, such as tipping, using their “own” smartphone. This primarily eliminates the need for costly retrofitting of specific operating components in the cockpit.
Parallel to the numerous body solutions on display, MAN has also developed the new sales module 'Vans to Go' for the transporter van sector: The concept involves bespoke industry vehicles fitted with MAN-certified bodies and attachments available for ‘instant sale’. The underlying idea is that since the vehicle is readily available, the customer can immediately fulfil their original order (in theory 48 hours from receipt of the order to delivery of the product). In addition, the customer no longer has to undertake time-consuming configurations for additional options. These industry vehicles ensure that all the equipment features required for immediate deployment are already built in as standard, meaning that only a small amount of customisation is required by the trader on-site or at the depot. The 'Vans to Go' vehicles will be marketed almost Europe-wide via a dedicated internet platform. Additional bespoke solutions will continue to be developed in close collaboration with MAN-certified body manufacturers.
Thanks to the various different wheelbases and overhangs, the available chassis types allow for bodies with a length of up to 3.7 metres (crew cab) and 4.5 metres (single cab). The wide track and standard fitting of all models with ESP (electronic stability programme) and load sensing lay the foundations for an even higher degree of safety when driving. This is also ensured by the axle-load reserves, which are able to compensate for unevenly distributed loads.

A wide range of driver assistance systems helps promote the safety of all road users in the ever increasing density of urban traffic. However, goods transport on motorways is also likely to see a substantial rise in the coming years. MAN has equipped the TGE with numerous assistance systems that not only significantly facilitate driving and steering but also help to effectively monitor the surroundings of the vehicle, thereby reducing the strain on the driver. By including Emergency Brake Assist as a standard feature, MAN is setting a benchmark in the field of safety.

EBA (Emergency Brake Assist)
With the introduction of the EBA (Emergency Brake Assist) as standard, MAN makes an essential contribution to traffic safety. Distance sensors serve to check critical distances from the vehicle ahead and help to shorten the stopping distance. Depending on the circumstances, the system responds to critical braking situations in two stages: during the first stage, the assistance system uses acoustic and optical signals to warn the driver of preceding vehicles braking abruptly or driving slowly, thereby alerting them to the potential risk of collision. At the same time, the vehicle is 'prepared' to initiate emergency braking. The brake pads are positioned against the brake discs, but without the vehicle decelerating at this stage. In addition, the sensitivity of the response behaviour of the Hydraulic Brake Assist system is increased.
If the driver does not react to the warning, the second stage begins with one short actuation of the brakes to alert the driver to the risk of rear-end collision. At the same time, the sensitivity of the response behaviour of the Brake Assist system is further increased. This means that full brake output is instantly available if the driver steps on the brake. Should the vehicle not brake hard enough, the Emergency Brake Assist system increases the brake pressure to the level that is required for the vehicle to come to a halt before reaching the obstacle.
In addition, the integrated City Emergency Brake function automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds, thereby reducing one of the most frequent causes of accidents, minimizing downtime and repair costs, and increasing the residual value.
Rear Traffic Alert
Especially when driving vehicles with a long body, reverse parking in areas with a constant flow of traffic often requires a slow, patient and cautious approach, ideally with the help of another passenger. Within the scope of the system, the parking assistant now supports the driver by monitoring the space on each side of the rear of the vehicle using sensors installed in the rear bumper. If another vehicle starts drawing too close, the driver is warned by an acoustic signal. If the driver does not react to the signal, the system attempts to avoid a collision by issuing a series of braking interventions.
Blind Spot Detection system
In conjunction with the Blind Spot Detection system, the Side Assist system informs the driver of objects within the critical zone via an LED display in the exterior mirror at speeds over 15 km/h. In case of a potential hazard, the system displays a steady light in the relevant exterior mirror to alert the driver’s attention. If the driver still indicates to change lanes, the LED signal becomes brighter and starts flashing to make the driver aware of the hazard. The Flank Protection Assistant works in conjunction with the ParkPilot, the basic version of which issues acoustic signals to warn of obstacles in front of and behind the vehicle. The Flank Protection Assistant additionally also monitors the immediate lateral vicinity of the vehicle at low speeds and thus helps to prevent minor damages.
Parking or reversing using the rear-view mirror is not for everyone. The same applies to finding a suitable parking space. Now both of these tasks can be accomplished by the Park Assist system. This system automatically manoeuvres the vehicle into parallel and bay parking spaces by executing optimal steering movements without the help of the driver. In addition, it can also autonomously steer the vehicle back out of parallel parking spaces in the same way. The Park Assist system also measures the dimensions of the parking space and determines the necessary starting position – all the driver has to do is accelerate and brake. He does, however, remain in full control of the vehicle at all times.
Trailer Assist system
Reversing or even manoeuvring with a trailer can test the patience of unpractised drivers as well as other road users. The critical steering points at which the trailer responds exactly as the driver intends are easily missed and the inverted view in the rear-view mirror makes it even harder to manoeuvre correctly. It quickly becomes evident that the key factor in precise reversing is the steering angle. The Trailer Assist system takes over the steering if required. The driver simply has to put the vehicle into reverse gear, press the Park Assist button and indicate the direction in which the trailer needs to move via the mirror adjustment. The vehicle then steers itself automatically, whilst the driver remains responsible for changing gear, accelerating and braking.
Crosswind Assist
The MAN TGE comes equipped with electromechanical power steering. Compared to hydraulic power steering systems, the advantage of this system is that it only uses energy when it is actually required by the driver. Apart from allowing for a substantial reduction in fuel consumption, this system also offers new comfort and safety functions. For example, the steering system compensates for counter-steering movements made by the driver due to strong crosswinds or cambered roads. In addition, the active reset function and the precise steering response in the central position allow for less steering corrections to be made and increase the sense of security for the driver. Assistance functions such as Trailer Assist also rely on this system. Moreover, the individual adjustment of the steering assist system to the engine specifications and equipment of the vehicle in which it is installed ensures comfortable steering.
Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC)
Increased comfort during long motorway drives is provided by the Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC). The system constantly monitors the area in front of the vehicle when travelling in lines of traffic and helps to create a save and relaxed driving experience. This is achieved by a sensor at the front of the vehicle that constantly measures the distance and relative speed to the preceding vehicle. All the driver has to do is set the desired following distance and speed using the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel and the vehicle will keep an almost constant distance to the one in front. A comparison between the actual and desired distance can also be provided on the multifunction display as an option. Of course, the driver can override the ACC system at any time by accelerating, braking or using the clutch. If the ACC system is installed in vehicles with automatic gearbox, it can slow down the vehicle right up to a complete stop when driving in convoys or encountering traffic jams.
Lane Assist
The active Lane Assist helps to avoid accidents within the system limits at speeds of over 65 km/h. To do so, it issues an optical warning to prevent the driver from accidentally leaving the lane. In some vehicles, this is also supported by a signal via the steering wheel. In addition, the Lane Assist system provides gentle and continuous counter steering. The system works via a camera that identifies lane markings, regardless of how many there are or whether they are intermittent or continuous. It even recognises lane markings in the dark or in fog. However, the system cannot function if there are no visible lane markings at all. The Lane Assist system will also not function if the indicator is activated before a lane marking is crossed. The driver can easily override the active Lane Assist system at any time and it does not relieve him of the responsibility to pay appropriate attention while driving.
Emergency Assist system
The Emergency Assist system helps the driver in suddenly occurring hazardous situations. It monitors the constant interaction between the automatic distance control system of the ACC and the active Lane Assist system and thus obtains information about the behaviour of the driver, such as acceleration, braking and steering. If there is no reaction from the driver, the system issues a series of continuous brake actuations to prompt the driver to take over the steering and automatically slows down the vehicle. Emergency Assist also warns other road users by activating the hazard lights and performing slight steering movements.
Multi-Collision Brake
Uncontrolled subsequent collisions are the primary cause of almost a quarter of all accidents resulting in personal injury. The Multi-Collision Brake attempts to prevent this from happening. If the driver is no longer able to brake on his own after a collision, it automatically initiates braking action within the system limits as part of an integrated safety device. This can prevent subsequent collisions with other obstacles or road users. The Multi-Collision Brake is activated when two separate sensors recognise that an accident has occurred. However, the driver can regain control of the vehicle at any time.
Fatigue Detection system
The Fatigue Detection system should be regarded as a purely preventative measure. It analyses and evaluates the driver's steering behaviour in relation to the length of the trip, the time of day and the light conditions. Upon detection of unusual behaviour, an acoustic warning signal and a symbol appearing on the multifunction display prompt the driver to stop for a break.
Sign Assist system
The Sign Assist system provides information about speed limits and areas in which overtaking is prohibited. The system uses a camera to identify road signs present in the surrounding traffic. Up to three different symbols can be captured and shown on the multifunction display and/or on the screen of the satellite navigation device. The 'most important' and therefore immediately applicable symbol is always displayed first. Subsequently relevant symbols are displayed on the right-hand side next to it.
Light Assist system
The Light Assist system provides comfort and safety while driving by automatically switching the vehicle's headlights between full and dipped beam. The system switches to full beam at speeds of over 60 km/h and in total darkness, whereas it automatically dips the headlights again upon detecting oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead to prevent other drivers from being dazzled.

And that’s not all: round-the-clock service and full knowledge of the vehicle are increasingly becoming parameters that determine the success of a company. Highest profits can only be achieved if a company is aware of the whereabouts and the condition of their work equipment at any given time. A new fleet management solution which is unique in the entire van sector will in future collect and prepare all relevant data and make it available via various digital services. These added value services are available ex works or as retrofits and can provide information regarding maintenance status as well as the overall availability of the fleet.

All vehicles are fitted with a Bluetooth hands-free system to keep drivers safe on the road and to ensure compliance with statutory regulations. Front loudspeakers also come fitted as standard, with rear loudspeakers available as an optional extra.

The MAN TGE is equipped with a total of two radios and a radio-navigation system. The standard "MAN Media Van" features 2 x 20 watt output and two front loudspeakers. The range of functions includes an SD card reader, a Bluetooth connection for mobile phones and USB/AUX-in ports.
The 8" display with proximity sensor of the "MAN Media Van Advanced" and "MAN Media Van Navigation" guarantees safe operation and eliminates distractions when driving. As soon as the driver or passenger moves a finger close to the touchscreen, the system automatically switches from display mode to input mode. Display mode is a stripped-down version of the normal screen, whereas input mode facilitates intuitive operation by specially highlighting and enlarging touchscreen-friendly options. The display also features a swipe scrolling function which is useful when choosing from a list or browsing for music tracks in your library (accessed from an SD card, for example).
The "MAN Media Van Advanced" radio boasts significantly enhanced functionalities, with music transmitted into the driver and passenger compartment through four loudspeakers. The 8" colour display responds to swipe and zoom gestures in a similar way to modern smartphones. The "Phone" and "Voice Control" menus can also be accessed via the radio in certain models. MAN SmartLink (MirrorLink) is also available. If a smartphone is plugged into the onboard infotainment system, the infotainment screen offers easy access to MirrorLink-compatible apps. And last but not least, a media-in port for iPods.
The "MAN Media Van Navigation" includes extended navigation options with European map data and an additional second SD card reader. The rest of its features and functions are identical. Free updates of navigation maps are also included in the price. The incorporation of the Guide & Inform Services from Car-Net means that this top-of the line system also keeps up with the latest trend of being able to access information anywhere and anytime. Users can search for interesting destinations, available parking spaces or the cheapest petrol stations in the vicinity, access the latest traffic updates straight via the Internet which are then immediately integrated into the navigation map, and much more. DAB is available as an option for both Radio and Navigation models.

As of now, customers throughout Europe can order a variety of body solutions for the MAN TGE. This eliminates the time-consuming process of configuration, enabling direct access to a vehicle optimised for a specific purpose. The trade vehicles ensure that all the necessary equipment features are included as standard and ideally require only minor customisation by a local dealer or at the customer’s own yard. In MAN’s peerless portfolio, there are box bodies from the companies Schmitz Cargobull, Junge and Spier, with the option of a double folding door in the rear or a tail lift by Bär, Dautel, MBB Palfinger or Sörensen. We also offer three-way tipper bodies from Henschel, Schoon and Scattolini – with the option of aluminium or steel side plates and additional toolboxes. In terms of the chassis, these bodies can be constructed with either a standard or long wheelbase. Furthermore, for the MAN TGE delivery van – regardless of the wheelbase – the customer has the chance to order a second row of three or four seats. Behind the recessed storage bay partition wall of this vehicle, there are racking systems from Bott or Sortimo for use in the relevant application. In order to meet all the needs of their respective trades, this racking can be ordered in modular form ex works. There is the option of a fixed workbench with a vice and either a fold-out worktop, a gas cylinder bundle, or a cargo safety package. The range of options with the delivery van as a base is completed by an upgrade for fresh produce delivery. All trade vehicles can be ordered with any available drive variant. The range of services offered by MAN, such as maintenance agreements or financing, are, of course, also applicable to these vehicles.
MAN’s newly established delivery sector sales department, “Vans to go”, is ideal for these ex works body solutions. In these special cases, the focus is on ensuring MAN trade vehicles with MAN-approved body modifications and upgrades are eligible for “immediate sale”. The basic idea: Immediate availability allows the customer to immediately fulfil their original contract (48 hours from receipt of order to delivery). “Vans to go” vehicles will be sold almost anywhere in Europe via their own internet platform (www.vanstogo.man). Body designs in collaboration with 18 partners will be available there, for vehicles such as roll-off skip loaders, crane trucks, dry freight vehicles, fresh produce delivery vans, low-frame flatbeds and tippers. Optimised driver's workplace
On the main instrument panel, behind the steering wheel, there is now a clearly structured 4” high-resolution colour screen. Differently coloured icons facilitate readability and user orientation. For example, eco-functions always appear in green, and activated safety systems are always highlighted. This means that any warning message or other information catches the eye more quickly. The clock face is also more recognisable, thanks to a white background illumination. In addition to the analogue display, there is now also a numerical digital speed display, which can be set to read km/h or mph as desired. The controls and menus are colour coordinated with the MAN Infotainment System MMT.
Beneath the steering wheel to the right, placed ergonomically, is the central switch and control panel, with its restructured functionality. Associated switches are organised in groups for more intuitive use, and functions that the driver uses frequently while driving are more prominent in his or her field of vision. For example, the rotary switch for the automated MAN TipMatic gearbox now sits on this main control panel. Also included is a new climate control module with a high-contrast display. The same new switch and control concept will be in each vehicle of all of MAN’s truck series from now on, so that changing from one truck to another is as simple as possible for the driver.
The modified design of the dashboard, above and to the right of the central control panel, is also noteworthy. The now freely accessible storage tray– handily within arm's reach, for stowing personal items such as glasses or mobile phones – has been supplemented by a large, deep shelf with centrally integrated electrical connections alongside. The new cup holders can also be locked in any position in this way. These now have spring grips around their interior, allowing them to securely hold drinks containers of different diameters. In the TGX there is room for up to four cup holders, while the TGS, TGL and TGM can have two. In the area below the central console, there is an additional open compartment, which extends along the entire width of the drawer below.
Since MAN has integrated the rotary switch for the TipMatic gearbox into the main control panel, the console next to the driver's seat only has the brake lever, and is therefore much more streamlined than before. This leaves more free space for standing and moving around between the seats and in front of the bed.
This improved use of space will be supplemented yet further by the cooler or storage box. From now on, in long cab variants, it will be possible to conceal these completely under the bed – smoothly, thanks to their bearings, and with even more storage volume than before. The TGX has 42 litres, and the TGS long cab variant 35 litres, available for storing food and drink. A quick-cooling function and an extremely quiet sleep mode with reduced compressor speed come as standard. If you don’t need a cooler, the same space can be taken up by a roomy closed storage box, for luggage or larger personal items. Both variants have the option of incorporating a bin on the driver’s side, and the TGX can also have an additional narrow storage compartment on the passenger’s side.
Optimised rest area
During breaks, or after the working day is done, drivers of TGX and TGS trucks as well as TGL and TGM trucks with L and XL cabs can find a convenient and cosy rest area behind the driver's seat, which has likewise been provided with an array of new amenities. Both the lower and upper bunks (optional) have overhauled control panels that, regardless of sleeping position, are easier to reach and therefore more convenient. A sizeable fixed storage compartment with differently sized shelves, positioned in the centre of the cab’s rear wall, replaces the cargo netting that has been used up to now. Set back in this compartment is the electrical control panel, with switches for the interior lighting, the windows, and the sliding roof. It also offers an alarm with a power-efficient LCD display and four efficient sockets (12V, 24V, USB), for use with mobile phones, tablets or even a television. In the upper bunk area, the optional control panel can be installed on either the driver’s side or the passenger’s.
New gooseneck lamps allow for a cosy atmosphere with warm lighting colours. Thanks to their flexible necks, they can either function as directed reading lamps or provide more diffuse lighting for the whole rest area. The lower bunk’s lights are attached to the storage compartment on the left; the upper bunk can have them on one or both sides attached to the roof recess. From here, the flexible lamps can even extend over the driver’s or passenger’s seats.
The MAN TGX long-haul cabins will now come with a new acoustic package as standard, to keep outside noise, such as traffic and street noise, outside. This is achieved by installing a variety of supplementary noise-dampening sheets, and reduces the interior noise level in the cab to a manageable 1.5 decibels. That’s a noise reduction of approximately eight percent. Above all, this noticeably increases the driver’s ability to get a good night’s sleep in busy rest stops and car parks. What’s more, the better-isolated interior really showcases the sound of the MAN sound system (available in connection with MAN Media Truck devices). Relaxing with some entertainment or enjoying a refreshing sleep – the optimised rest area is ideal for either.
Optional interior colour scheme
Upon request, all TG series trucks can substitute the pleasing beige and grey contrast colouring in the lower areas of their cabs for an all-over dark grey. This “Urban Concrete” colour scheme is especially aimed at customers whose vehicles accumulate a lot of dirt during driving. The dark surfaces in this colour scheme are resistant if they come into contact with dirty hands or work clothes.

MAN is fitting its mid-range TGL and TGM series with a new engine. The drive unit, available in four and six-cylinder versions, stands out thanks to its clean SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment. In connection with various engine component enhancements, the simplified exhaust gas cleaning is expanding the range of applications of the D08 series and reducing diesel consumption. New engine power output levels, as well as enhanced functionality for the MAN TipMatic gearbox with 6 and 12 gears, also provide more driving comfort for the MAN TGL and TGM.

MAN’s new D08 engine generation, the exhaust gas cleaning of which is based on SCR technology, has been made lighter and even more efficient. The Euro 4 and Euro 5 versions are highly sulphur-tolerant and can therefore be deployed all over the world, including in countries with a high sulphur content of up to 2000 ppm. In addition, the Euro 4, 5 and 6 versions feature new, standardised performance levels. The MAN D0834 four-cylinder, with its 4.6 litre displacement, provides 160 hp in the basic version and a torque value of up to 600 Nm. The mid-range version offers 190 hp and 750 Nm, while the most powerful design provides 220 hp and 850 Nm torque value. The four-cylinder version is used exclusively in the MAN TGL, while the six-cylinder D0836 version, with its 6.9 litre displacement, represents both top-level motorisation for the MAN TGL and the basic-level performance for MAN TGM in the 250 hp and 1050 Nm version. The new D08 six-cylinder engine is available in a 290 hp version with 1150 Nm, as well as a 320 hp version with a full torque value of 1250 Nm.
While, in the case of the Euro 4 and 5 versions, only Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is used for exhaust gas aftertreatment, the Euro 6 version also has an oxidising catalytic converter and a CRT filter. The higher combustion temperature is essential for the improved fuel efficiency, which will be between 3 and 5%. This is accompanied by the clean SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment and allows for a higher degree of thermodynamic efficiency. Despite higher systemic Ad Blue consumption, ultimately, lower operating costs are achieved compared to previous engine generations. The AdBlue tank’s capacity is increasing to 65 litres.
Of increasing interest is the simpler design of the exhaust gas cleaning system, also for the second lifespan of a vehicle. It is inexpensive to convert Euro 6 vehicles to the Euro 5 or Euro 4 standard for secondary marketing in countries outside of Europe with a sulphur level in diesel fuel that is often higher.
Irrespective of the European standard or performance level, from now on, a single-level turbo charger provides the necessary charge pressure. Overall, the new D08 engine generation stands out due to its less complex construction, which also benefits the component weight. Depending on the performance level, it reduces weight by up to 103 kg, which is a positive factor in balancing carrying capacity. The engine’s reliability and service life also profit from the less complex construction.
As well as the new exhaust gas cleaning, other measures contribute to the increased efficiency of the new D08 engine generation; for example, needs-based engine cooling via the regulated fan clutch, combined with the new temperature sensor and expansion tank. This has an impact not just in terms of the lower fuel consumption but also directly on driver comfort. From the point of view of construction, the C cab in the four-cylinder version can be designed with lower access.
In addition, all new D08 Euro 6c engines can, for the first time, be operated without subsequent conversion with paraffin fuels such as, for example, hydrogenated vegetable oil, i.e. synthetic second-generation biodiesel fuel, in accordance with EN 15940.
One advantage for the company is the longer interval between engine oil changes. This is now to increase from 60,000 to up to 80,000 kilometres when using engine oils approved by MAN. However, the display, with its service interval calculator, is crucial, as individual intervals can vary depending on how the vehicle is used. Changing the CRT filter, which is necessary after 450,000 km at most, is also dependent on the driving profile.

New functions for MAN TipMatic gearbox
MAN’s new D08 engine generation is accompanied by completely revised start-up and gearshift matching and new functions for the MAN TipMatic gearbox for TGL and TGM. Idle Speed Driving is now also available for the 6-gear and 12-gear TipMatic gearbox, as well as for the TipMatic versions of the TGX and TGS series. This gearbox function makes it possible to drive slowly at idling speed with the clutch down without touching the accelerator. A steady speed is maintained throughout. This is a helpful source of support for the driver, particularly in slow-moving traffic or when approaching a roundabout. At the same time, Idle Speed Driving reduces clutch wear.
Two other new functions of MAN TipMatic are exclusive to the 12-gear gearbox. With the Speed Shifting function, the gearbox switches between the three highest gears more quickly, in order to make individual downshifts and upshifts as comfortable as possible and to minimise traction interruption, especially for vehicles with long drive trains when travelling on motorways. In the future, EfficientRoll, the new gearbox function in the TGL and TGM, will make reduced consumption a feature of driving on slightly sloping stretches of motorways and roads with the 12-gear TipMatic gearbox. From a speed of 55 km/h, the gearbox switches to neutral and the engine continues to run at idling speed with minimal consumption. The vehicle cruises and the kinetic energy can be used without any braking effect on the engine.
With its new functions, the new TipMatic generation for MAN TGL and TGM provides additional support for the efficiency of the new D08 engine generation and helps to save on fuel.

MAN is enhancing the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) in the TGX and TGS with an intelligent Stop-and-Go function, which takes the pressure off the driver in slow-moving traffic or in traffic jams. The truck brakes to a standstill automatically and continues to move independently during short stops. In addition, ACC is even more comfortable, safe and fuel-efficient in standard mode thanks to a revised braking and acceleration system. The new functions are the ideal addition to the Emergency Brake Assist (EBA 2) and Lane Guard System (LGS) and proactively help these safety systems to prevent accidents.

Slow-moving commuter traffic, daily traffic jams or lines of vehicles crawling along the motorway. This means constantly having to start and stop in an extremely tight space densely packed with lots of other road users: Stop-and-Go, a situation that is extremely demanding for the driver and sharply increases the risk of rear-end collisions caused by inattentiveness. It is precisely in this situation that the new Stop-and-Go function, integrated in the ACC, substantially increases safety. It is initially available for the MAN TGX and MAN TGS trucks with Euro 6 D26 engine and with MAN TipMatic gearbox 12+2. The range will be extended to other driveline versions by mid-2019.
Specifically conceived for situations such as traffic jams or slow-moving traffic, the Stop-and-Go function makes it possible to use the ACC across the entire speed range. – in the event that the vehicle ahead stops, even if it comes to a complete standstill. The ACC also adjusts to stationary vehicles ahead; however, the driver’s own speed must be lower than 50 km/h. If it takes less than two seconds to stop, the truck starts up again automatically and moves forward. If stopping takes longer than two seconds, the system automatically cuts off the pressure in the service brake and the driver can start up by briefly activating the accelerator or pressing a button on the multi-function steering wheel. Typical stop-and-go accidents with body damage are therefore avoided and the truck driver can manage such traffic situations effortlessly and without stress. Sensors in the driver's seat ensure that the function can only be activated if a driver is actually sitting at the steering wheel.
ACC even more comfortable, efficient and safe
As well as the new Stop-and-Go function, the new generation of MAN’s ACC also offers a more comfortable manner of approaching vehicles ahead. In addition, the system avoids unnecessary braking and acceleration and therefore reduces brake lining wear and fuel consumption while driving on ACC. It can now be activated from as little as 15 km/h, offering a higher maximum brake delay and can therefore also mitigate critical situations automatically and more effectively. Furthermore, a new radar shield almost entirely prevents accumulations of snow in wintry conditions, as well as the corresponding functional restrictions. Overall, the new ACC generation makes distance control even more comfortable, efficient and safe.
ACC relies on two sensor systems to detect stationary vehicles or vehicles ahead. On the one hand, this involves data being supplied by the radar sensor to the front apron – it is constantly registering the distance and position of the vehicle ahead, using this to calculate its relative speed and compares it to the driver’s own truck and speed, in order to decelerate or accelerate accordingly. On the other hand, it evaluates the data logged by the video camera on the windscreen – the camera has an object and lane detection function that operates independently of the radar and supplies the necessary information for a specific classification of objects on and next to the road.
EBA 2 permanently activated as standard
MAN already uses this highly advanced sensor-data fusion for the Emergency Brake Assist (EBA 2) emergency braking system. EBA 2 can also use this fusion to interpret challenging traffic scenarios more reliably, identify vehicles ahead and stationary obstructions with a higher degree of certainty and therefore only activate emergency braking when required. Thanks to the reliable and robust object determination, the system can react decisively to such a situation, slow the vehicle down and come to a standstill with invaluable metres of distance to spare. EBA 2 already clearly exceeds the legal requirements for emergency braking systems, which are set to be tightened up from the end of 2018. MAN offers EBA 2 for the whole tonnage range from 7.5 tons and, from the start of 2018, also for vehicles with emission standards Euro 3, 4 and 5.
The design of the EBA 2 Emergency Brake Assist system follows the maxim that “the driver should always be the doer.” MAN’s cautionary philosophy guarantees a high level of acceptance among drivers. This interaction between two technologies, radar and camera, greatly reduces the risk of unfounded warnings, as two technologies can be used for object detection. This helps MAN to achieve its goal of irritating the driver as little as possible with warning signals.
Given the positive experiences with this design philosophy, as of Spring 2017, MAN no longer installs a version of EBA 2 that can be deactivated by a button on the instrument panel as standard. This is so that the increased safety provided by the system can be increased further. This ensures that the driver still has complete control over the system at all times.
In combination with the ESS (Emergency Stopping Signal), which, in the event of emergency braking, activates the hazard warning light with increased flash frequency in addition to the brake lights, and the Lane Guard System (LGS), that precisely monitors the vehicle’s position in relation to the lane and independently detects changes to lane conditions, EBA 2 and the new Adaptive Cruise Control Stop-and-Go function offer all road users increased safety and a significant easing of the burden on truck drivers.

The RIO Box is now included as standard equipment with all brand-new MAN Euro 6-standard truck series in Europe. In ensuring this, MAN is laying the foundations for a future infrastructure whose services can link up the entire transportation and logistics sector. Using the RIO cloud-based technology solution customers will soon be able to centrally access diverse fleet data and use a whole host of transportation and logistics sector services. Here, the RIO Box acts as an interface between vehicle and platform.

The RIO Box is compatible with all systems and manufacturers. It is designed specifically so it can be used in mixed fleets, thereby offering small and medium-sized logistics companies the chance to become part of Logistics 4.0. RIO Box retrofits for vehicles with an FMS interface will be possible in future too. Current users of the MAN Telematics system have the option of securely transferring their collected data to RIO.
“With RIO the customers of MAN will be among the digital frontrunners of the transportation and logistics sector. In future we will use RIO to provide not just our own services, but also OEM services and partner services. We have big plans ahead!”, announces Markus Lipinsky, CEO of RIO. Current partners of the platform include, as well as leading service providers, start-ups LoadFox, Evertracker and Synfioo. The number of prospective stakeholders is vast.
When developing the RIO Box, the highest standards were applied to privacy and data security. The customer can decide itself whether it wants to share data with RIO and benefit from the platform’s digital solutions. A security server certified under European standards and based in Germany transmits the data encrypted by the Box before making this available to the customer via platform. This then enables additional functions which include the analysis of vehicle data, e.g. engine rotations, speed, fuel level or brake usage by the driver. The number of services offered on RIO will grow steadily in line with customer needs and existing services will be continually improved and automatically updated for the user.

RIO pools digital services for the entire transportation and logistics ecosystem. From the MAN F90 to the MAN F2000 Evolution
Looking back at two successful series.

“F90” was the name given by MAN to the new series that celebrated its launch in July 1986. The name was a glimpse into the future, as the series continued to come off the production line beyond the 1990s. MAN stuck with the cube-shaped design of its cab. This provided maximum space and the highest degree of comfort for the driver. The fact that the windscreen stood at a 10-degree angle for aerodynamic reasons did not seem strange. The new wide-bodied cab reached a width of 2.44 metres, a respectable size given that 2.50 metres was the maximum vehicle width permitted by law.
Externally, MAN’s priority was endurance. All areas particularly exposed to splashing water and dirt were made of galvanised sheet steel. This included the side sections of the front wall below the A-pillar, the outer panels of the doors and the rear wall reinforcements. MAN used plastic to manufacture the front panel with the distinctive, silver-edged rectangular grill, the step unit and the multi-piece mudguard. The bumper with integrated front apron was made of a universal component composed of glass fibre reinforced plastic.
As regards the interior, MAN focused on comfort and ergonomic design. No longer were the eyes drawn to so much bare sheet metal, as one had grown accustomed to with earlier cabs. Coverings made from plastics and synthetic fibres upgraded the interior. The design of the instrument panel represented a sizeable increase in safety and ergonomic comfort. It initially impressed with glare-free displays. Thanks to the slightly angled design of the round instruments, the driver got the most important information, such as speed and RPM, at a glance. New, comfortable power steering made the driver’s work at the wheel easier. The focus was on what was happening with the traffic outside of the cab. Operating the vehicle was no longer the distraction it once was with previous trucks.
The dimensions and interior of the cab contributed to the positive reputation that the MAN F90 enjoyed among drivers. In line with this, the first sales brochure read: “A relaxed driver is a good driver.” MAN’s new bread-and-butter product wasn’t just received positively by drivers. The international jury, made up of commercial vehicle journalists, also voted the MAN F90 “Truck of the Year 1987”.
Production began in the summer of 1986 with semi-trailer tractors and chassis for platform bodies and swap body carrying frames. But the market for the F90 was much bigger; many sectors were waiting for the new chassis in a design that they had long needed. Little by little, air suspension, all-wheel drive, robust steel bumpers and optional narrower cabs enriched the product family. The narrower 2.28 metre-wide cabs were in particular demand for construction and municipal vehicles. Starting with the IAA 1989, the high-roof cab has since occupied the top spot in the cab portfolio. Space in abundance. 50cm of extra space above meant 2.17 metres of interior headroom, more distance between the bottom and top bunks and larger storage compartments above the windscreen. The fittings at that time also included a sliding roof.
Safety features increasingly gained in importance. Therefore, from 1989, MAN equipped vehicles in all series with seatbelts as standard.
MAN launched the F90 series with three performance levels for the 6-cylinder in-line engine from the D28 series: 290 hp, 330 hp and 360 hp. One year later, the 460 hp V10 engine gave MAN Europe’s most powerful road freight truck. Over the years, experts at MAN got 500 hp out of this engine and later even 600 hp, in order to defend their title. The motor mileage changed several times while MAN F90 was in production. On the one hand, the market was demanding higher performance. Whereas 460 hp was enough to be considered a peak value in 1987, ten years later a performance class of around 450 hp had become the norm in international long-haul transport and heavy construction site deployment. On the other hand, the engineers and technicians in the engine development department at MAN’s plant in Nuremburg were faced with the challenges of exhaust gas cleaning. In 1990, all models had to meet the Euro 0 emissions limit with Euro 1 being introduced three years later.
At times, MAN had engines in the sales directory with slightly strange designs: An in-line engine with just 5 cylinders, which achieved 260 hp initially with a turbo charger and intercooler, before achieving 270 hp from 1990. Then, a 320 hp version came long.
From the F2000 to the F2000 Evolution
After eight years and with more than 100,000 F90 series vehicles having been built, MAN worked intensively on developing the beloved product into the F2000. MAN had it ready for the IAA 1994 in Hanover. However, from the outside, some people needed to look twice to spot the differences between this and its predecessor. In the main, people recognised the F2000 from the front end below the grill: the freeform twin headlights yielded a 75% higher light output. MAN was the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to make use of a new form of light technology. Whereas the fluting in the headlight glass had taken care of scattering the beam, now, individual reflective surfaces and their configuration took over this function. This made it possible to install clear screens made from scratch-resistant plastic. A development that was to the benefit of the design.
These headlights were located in a redesigned, three-part plastic bumper. This was more economical for companies, as they now only needed to replace the damaged section rather than the whole component. The front apron was drawn further downwards than with the F90, in order to improve passive accident prevention in the event of collisions with cars. As well as the safety aspect, the front apron also had functional significance. The large openings conducted the necessary cooling air to the engine.
The meaningful changes in the F2000 were lurking under the cab in the driveline. As early as two years before the legal introduction of the Euro 2 emissions standard, MAN brought their clean and environmentally friendly engine to the market. What’s more, this was also fitted in the outgoing F90 series. The most important element of compliance with emissions limits was the injection pump. This represented the incorporation of electronics in commercial vehicles, as it calculated the injection quantity from a variety of parameters. These included the accelerator pedal position, the temperatures of fuel and coolant, as well as the charge pressure. Connected to the motor was the gearbox with 12 or 16 gears and, for the first time, an automated shift called AutoShift to relieve the driver.
Engine power was between 310 and 600 hp and changed several times in the production period. Hand in hand with this, there were developments in engine technology, the results of which were optimisations in terms of environmental sustainability and consumption and therefore also the company’s profitability. Four-valve technology, turbo charger, intercooler, high-pressure crankshaft injection pump, electronically controlled fuel injection and exhaust gas recirculation were the various components used by engineers if required. This is because shortly before discontinuation, the Euro 3 engines, which were mandatory from the start of 2001, were integrated in the F2000 Evolution series.
The cab portfolio remained unchanged for the following four variants: local transport cab, long-haul transport cab, high-capacity cab and high-capacity cab with high roof. Drivers were pleased with the emphasis on comfort and the ergonomically designed new features in the interior. There was a revised instrument panel, improved heating and ventilation technology, air conditioning, comfortable seats or leather seats with lumbar support, more storage space, and wood-finish trims, as well as the possibility of accommodating video and TV sets in the cab. And drivers had a smoother ride, as, if desired, all four corners of the new, comfortable cab mounting system sat on rubber spring elements instead of coil-sprung suspension with stabilisers. MAN also placed the driver’s work environment at the centre of its product development, including sleeping comfort. Instead of the customary board with a cover, MAN assembled a bunk made from a rectangular frame with a rubber-elastic covering as a base and a ten centimetre-thick foam mattress.
Electronics were not only installed in the engine of MAN’s F2000. With Autocheck, drivers and workshops got important information on the display located centrally in the field of vision, between the revolution counter and the speedometer. The vehicle’s condition could be viewed there during pre-departure checks and maintenance records. On the left, next to the seat, the driver had access to the control unit for the electronically controlled air suspension. And a system called ESAC (Electronic Shock Absorber Control) regulated the damper settings in order to compensate for rolling and pitching movements.
MAN reaped the rewards for the development work and for its optimisations in terms of environmental friendliness and driving and living comfort when it was awarded “Truck of the Year 1995” for the F2000 series.
Minor visual adjustments changed the appearance over the years. The F2000 morphed into the F2000 Evolution at its last appearance at the IAA 1998. The distinctive chrome frame around the grill was removed and the wind deflectors on the sides of the front panel were made higher as a result of aerodynamic optimisations.
The F2000 was assembled at the Munich and Salzgitter plants in order to keep up with increasing demand. The whole production network of MAN plants at that time contributed to this: Engines from Nuremberg, frames and pressed sheet metal parts from Gustavsburg, as well as cable harnesses and components for frame add-ons from Penzberg. And the Vienna plant had specialised in particular sector-specific designs, which could not be applied across the production network. This included the heavy-duty tractor with a maximum gross combination weight of 250 tons, versions with articulated trailing axle, special designs with two to five axles and a combination weight of 50 tons, as well as particularly laborious conversions at the request of customers. The latter included the assembly of attachment devices for snowploughs or cranes and special versions of gearboxes, engines and suspension systems.
The history of the F series did not just suddenly end with the presentation of MAN’s Trucknology Generation in Spring 2000. At first, the MAN TGA and the F2000 Evolution ran off the same assembly lines in both plants. Increasing diversity in versions saw the TGA supersede its predecessor, and this switched to the Vienna plant in 2002. This is where, in 2004, the 18-year history of the F series came to an end.
Comparing the generations: Long-term comparison of CO2 reduction
Originating from the ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association)’s question as to how CO2 emissions from commercial vehicles have reduced over the decades, in Spring 2017, MAN carried out an intra-brand test drive with the support of TÜV Süd. Three semi-trailer tractors were used in various phases:
- MAN series F90: a 19.402 FL from the 1994 model year, emissions stage Euro 2
- MAN series F2000: a 19.464 FL from the 2001 model year, emissions stage Euro 2
- MAN TGX 18.500 4x2 BLS EfficientLine 3 from 2016, emissions stage Euro 6c
The semitrailer combinations, unloaded at 39 tons, travelled for 360 kilometres on three occasions. To balance out the impact of the driver and the semitrailer, this was exchanged after each round. The result is a reduction in fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions of 31.5% for the period between 1994 and 2016.

The company also produces city buses, intercity buses, coaches and bus chassis for the MAN brand, and luxury coaches for the NEOPLAN brand. The product portfolio also includes industrial engines for marine, on-road and off-road applications and a comprehensive range of services linked to mobility. In Germany, the company runs production sites in Munich and Nuremburg, together with its component manufacturing and logistics site in Salzgitter. In addition, it implements special customer requests at its Truck Modification Centres in Wittlich, Steyr and Munich and its Bus Modification Centre in Plauen. It also has additional manufacturing sites in Steyr (Austria), St Petersburg (Russia) and Starachowice and Cracow (Poland). Further afield, it operates production sites in Ankara (Turkey), Pithampur (India) and the South African cities of Olifantsfontein and Pinetown.
Broad range of trucks
The MAN truck programme ranges from the TGL (7.49 to 12 tonnes) to the medium series TGM (12 to 26 tonnes) through to the TGS and TGX series with permissible gross weights of 18 to 44 tonnes. TGS is a series of robust trucks with a permitted gross vehicle weight of 18 to 41 tonnes designed for export markets, specifically Russia, Asia and Africa. In India, MAN manufactures trucks in the CLA series covering the 16 to 49-tonne weight category. MAN produces heavy trucks in Munich, Cracow, St. Petersburg, Pinetown as well as Pithampur (MAN CLA). The light and medium series are manufactured in Steyr.
MAN and NEOPLAN buses
The products of the MAN and NEOPLAN bus brands include coaches, intercity buses, city buses and bus chassis. The diversified MAN range of city and intercity buses and coaches is primarily geared towards companies focused on operating efficiency. With its exclusive touring coaches, NEOPLAN caters primarily for customers wishing to turn the journeys of their VIP passengers into a luxurious travel experience. MAN and NEOPLAN brand coaches are produced in Ankara, while the plant in Starachowice turns out city buses and bus chassis.
Efficient engines from MAN Truck & Bus
MAN Truck & Bus develops and produces common-rail diesel engines that are installed in MAN trucks as well as in MAN and NEOPLAN buses. Other manufacturers also install MAN engines in their commercial vehicles, construction and agricultural machinery and rail vehicles, as well as yachts and working boats. Nuremberg (Germany) is the development centre and production site for MAN engines. In addition to diesel engines, MAN Truck & Bus also supplies engines powered by natural gas. This makes MAN the market leader in Europe for city buses powered by natural gas and in Germany for gas engines for cogeneration.
MAN is working intensively on the implementation of engine technologies aimed at a sustainable reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. A continual increase in efficiency underscores MAN’s impressive expertise when it comes to diesel engines. Furthermore, great attention is being paid to hybrid technology for commercial vehicles. The MAN Lion’s City Hybrid city bus has been selling successfully on the market ever since 2010. Its diesel-electric hybrid drive offers fuel and CO2 savings in daily operation of up to 30 percent.
