At this year's IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover from September 20 through 27, MAN is presenting to international trade visitors a whole number of things innovative and new in trucks, buses and coaches, engines and services. Premiering at the world's biggest show in the commercial vehicles sector are the new trucks of the TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX series readied for the upcoming Euro VI exhaust emissions standard. With a striking restyled front the new trucks of the TG family with their sophisticated MAN Euro VI technology hit the road producing practically no emissions and scoring with low fuel consumption, excellent dynamics, enhanced driving comfort and minimum cost of ownership.
Euro VI is coming. Efficiency is here to stay. The new MAN TGS and TGX
In its Euro VI trucks and buses MAN implements an efficient mix of demand-controlled exhaust gas recirculation and exhaust after-treatment with SCRT . The central components for Euro VI are, on the engine side, common-rail- injection, cooled and controlled exhaust-gas recirculation and two-stage turbocharging. These are followed by exhaust-gas aftertreatment by an SCR system with integrated oxidation catalytic converter plus CRT filter. Electronic sensors permanently monitor absorption capacity of the particulate filter to control regeneration.
What MAN engineers aimed for in development ready for Euro VI was the limitation of fuel consumption with unchanging performance, space-optimised packaging of the exhaust-cleaning components, and maintenance of the familiar payload advantages of MAN commercial vehicles together with maximum reliability and ease of servicing. The result is impressive. The economical figures for fuel consumption of the MAN TG trucks in Euro V/EEV, determined by independent trade magazines, are even bettered by their Euro VI follow-ups, with a substantial drop in AdBlue® consumption. The weight of the Euro VI system stays so low that the attractive payload benefits of TG trucks take an even bigger lead over the competition.
The successful MAN TGX EfficientLine remains a veritable champion fuel-saver in Euro VI. MAN was the first producer to market a truck of this kind, designed front to end for efficiency, and has been imitated many times since. The fuel saving of as much as three litres compared to a standard semi-trailer tractor is maintained for Euro VI. Now new on-board the TGX EfficientLine is a standard outfit with MAN TeleMatics®. The hardware comes ready installed, and the first 500 customers can test the software for free for four months to experience the advantages of this efficient fleet management.
In a class of their own – MAN TGL and TGM with new interior
A special highlight are the new MAN TGL and TGM with fully restyled cab interior. Brushed aluminium trims, surfaces of grained plastic and satin chromed door handles all contribute to the premium appearance of the TG family. The new instrument panel embodies functionality and ease of operation, uncluttered and with clear lines. The heating / air-conditioning panel has been fitted with new control elements and display. Similarly, the toggle switches also have a new design - discreet illumination makes for quick and correct identification of the switches' symbols in the dark. A variety of compartments offer ample stowage space. Two rubberised trays in the center console below the air vents offer adequate space for securely holding items that are often needed. Optionally, stowage space can be increased with the addition of drawers. The glasses compartment with pen holder beneath the radio can be closed by means of a flap. Optionally, the door module can be fitted with stowage trays beneath the armrests. Innovative, automatic air-conditioning makes sure drivers keep their cool when the going gets hot. Ventilation with optimized air flow and reduced outlet noise creates more effective climate control overall. Distribution of the air is also improved, with no annoyance caused by draughts.
Lion to the fore – MAN trucks and buses with new product logo
Simultaneously with the launch of the new TG family at IAA 2012, MAN Truck & Bus is modernising the visual identity of its product brand. Adepts and fans of the MAN brand will immediately recognize the remodelling of the product logo – after all the word/image presentation with the three letters "MAN" surmounting a lion has been established for decades now. The MAN product logo was continuously restyled in the past to accentuate social trends, innovations in technology or corporate developments. By redesigning its logo, MAN aims to reflect the dynamism of global developments and new international challenges for commercial vehicle producers, lending a pronounced visual identity to efficiency, customer service and enthusiasm for the product – the values the brand stands for.
The focus is the lion, the world-famous sign of tradition and a symbol of the strength of MAN Truck & Bus, here in a significantly modified revaluation. The image is removed from the frame to take up a new, prominent position above the wording. Together with this "elevation" to the upper chrome high-lighter, the silhouette of the lion becomes more dynamic. It radiates agility and strength as a valuable asset in the design of today's MAN vehicles. Integrated as a noble embossment in the upper chrome trim of the radiator grille it conveys emotionality, value, substance.
The corporate and brand name MAN also benefits from the new styling of the logo and the departure from the traditional word/image bond. Slightly enlarged and placed in the middle of the radiator grille, the letters MAN are even better visible – a brand word reflecting the self-assurance of the company and its people, the individual character of its products and services.
Double role in the premium segment – the new NEOPLAN Jetliner
A special highlight at the IAA this year is being presented by the NEOPLAN brand: the Jetliner is a new premium bus that can serve as both a city bus and a touring coach. The NEOPLAN Jetliner combines real coach comfort with big luggage-compartment volumes. It handles outstandingly and the materials offered as options for the passenger compartment are top class. This is what makes the Jetliner a real NEOPLAN! Its floor height of 1,070 millimetres is the basis of its use as "double earner". It allows maximum flexibility for the choice of seating, offers up to 8 m³ of storage volume, and has the perfect access height for use in regular-service operation. The high standards set for the vehicle's interior design are met by a large selection of high-quality fabrics for the seats and coverings. A comprehensive standard safety package guarantees outstanding driving safety round the clock.
The Jetliner brand looks proudly back at its nearly 40 years of tradition with NEOPLAN. The newly presented generation embodies the idea of a com-pact-sized combination bus featuring the Sharp Cut Design popular from the other NEOPLAN top models. All these features are embodied by the new Jetliner with its compact outer dimensions, its vehicle height of 3.4 metres, and its turning circle of 21 metres for the twelve-metre model. Old historical town centres with narrow winding roads and low gateway passages are barely an obstacle to the Jetliner. It is this extraordinary combination of features which gives the Jetliner its special status while offering the customer an out-standing degree of flexibility for the vehicle's use both in the travel and regular-service segments.
Best practice – the new MAN Lion's Coach EfficientLine
MAN is continuing the successful concept of the TGX EfficientLine in the touring coach – premiering at IAA 2012 is the MAN Lion's Coach Efficient-Line. This coach offers its passengers the high level of comfort and maximum safety they are used to, but is even more sparing of valuable fuel than ever before. A perfect combination of efficient technology, driver training and selected services – that is the recipe for the success of the MAN Lion's Coach EfficientLine. The coach comes fitted with the most efficient drive train configuration: 440-hp D2676 engine, MAN TipMatic® Coach transmission and eco-hypoid driven axle. Also contributing to fuel saving is standard equipment that includes tyre-pressure monitoring and tyres with low rolling resistance on aluminium rims. The price of the vehicle includes instruction by MAN ProfiDrive® to teach drivers how to work their coach and save fuel. To cut cost of ownership there is also an extended warranty on the drive train, which comes as standard with the Lion's Coach EfficientLine.
Efficiency guaranteed – new in the MAN portfolio of services
Commercial vehicles from MAN are dependable companions in the transport business and master the most challenging of tasks on a daily basis – from international long-hauls to tough deployments at construction sites. As part of its integral transport solutions MAN offers a broad range of services, reliably supporting the customer after investment in a vehicle. At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012, MAN will be introducing the new MAN Service Card in Germany, with VW Leasing GmbH as the card issuer. The fuel and service card, with its many functions, not only ensures mobility but also enhances trans-parency in fleet management and increases fleet efficiency. It serves as a universal means of payment, for instance, to simplify daily vehicle operations. Plus, customers benefit from attractive terms to save money when refuelling. The settlement service, in combination with the new online controlling and reporting system "fleetTrucks" ensures complete cost transparency for the entire fleet.
MAN TeleMatics® is the efficient solution for fleet control, management and logistics and ensures economical vehicle deployment and transparent trans-portation processes for the new TG vehicles as well. A major feature of MAN TeleMatics® software, vehicle operations analysis or FEA, has been en-hanced: reporting is even more detailed, functionality is expanded to improve fleet management. Take-me-with-you telematics are available from MAN too, with a new TeleMatics® app for iPhone and iPad. This way it is possible to use essential functions even on mobile terminals.
The subject of reconditioned parts in the commercial vehicles industry is be-coming increasingly significant in the light of ageing fleets and ecological concerns. To meet the needs of this market, MAN is introducing its Genuine Parts ecoline at IAA 2012. Spare parts conditioned to MAN genuine parts standards go easier on the budgets of vehicle operators as well as on the environment and valuable resources.
Concept S - premiere of the aerodynamically optimised tractor and semi-trailer design study with the potential for big reductions in con-sumption and CO2 emission
MAN's design study "Concept S" was the focus of interest at the IAA 2010. Thanks to sophisticated aerodynamics, a 25-percent reduction in consumption and CO2 per tonne-kilometre is within the realm of the feasible - without having to accept any limitations in load capacity At the IAA 2012, MAN will for the first time be showing the combination in the form of an aerodynamically optimally harmonised tractor and semi-trailer. MAN's partner in the realisation of the study is the trailer manufacturer Krone with its AeroLiner.
The development of the aerodynamics took account of the airflow around the tractor and semi-trailer as a whole. This starts with the tractor's rounded front section, the reduced area of its mirrors and the streamlined, integrated tanks. The newly developed roof spoiler closes the gap between tractor and trailer. The trailer's full-size side finishers and tapered rear complete the optimal flow of air around the road train. As a result, the design study has a drag co-efficient (cw) of around 0.3, which is a value achieved by modern passenger limousines.
Super-silent and emission-free – the MAN Metropolis research vehicle
In the hybrid Metropolis research vehicle MAN is presenting an unusual truck at IAA 2012 that can handle heavy transport duties in the city without emissions and especially low-noise. Powered by regenerative current from the socket, the Metropolis can be driven without emitting any CO2 at all. Its ener-gy storage, a lithium-ion battery in modular construction, is located beneath the cab, guaranteeing maximum space for the body, optimal weight distribution and the highest safety levels. An efficient and low-noise passenger vehicle diesel engine from Volkswagen produces on-board power to demand and supports the ranging of the heavy truck. In order to study the practicality and the economic viability of the vehicle concept, the research vehicle will commence a two-year period of test operation in the Antwerp / Brussels region starting at the end of 2012.
New online tools for visitors to the fair
In its MAN IAA 2012 App, MAN is providing a versatile information tool free for downloading from the iTunes Store. The identical information can also be accessed by every smartphone at the mobile website www.app-iaa.mantruckandbus.com.
In addition to useful information about the trade fair, the MAN IAA 2012 App also offers detailed product information and an overview of the stand. The App can access current news directly from the fair. A QR code is attached to every exhibit, enabling App users to obtain supplementary information quickly and easily. The Innovation Forum has an integrated augmented-reality function, which makes it possible to insert a 3-D model of the Concept S into the picture taken by a camera.
The new website www.tg.mantruckandbus.com also provides comprehen-sive service with regard to the new MAN TG trucks. 3-D models of all series can be rotated on-line to show all the perspectives. During the market launch phase, a regular newsflash tells you all you need to know about the details.

In 2007, MAN Truck & Bus set a milestone for reliable, powerful and consistently efficient transport solutions with their presentation of two new heavy truck series – marking the birth of MAN TGX and TGS. Since their market launch, both series have become reliable partners to the transport industry and it would be hard to imagine the roads without them - from Munich to Moscow or from Sevilla all the way to São Paulo. Customers all over the world are full of praise for the outstanding features offered by these successful series, including their economical efficiency and low total cost of ownership (TCO), while drivers all over the world are taken with their excellent handling and generous interiors. Even the international trade press was smitten and honoured both series with a number of awards. To quote just one example, they were voted "Truck of the Year 2008" by a jury of experts. Additionally, independent tests conducted by renowned trade journals have attested both the TGX and the TGS top marks for their fuel consumption, comfort, safety, range of models and selection of cabs. The sales figures confirm this impressive success story: since 2007 nearly 200,000 TGX and TGS have rolled off the assembly line.
Building on this seasoned and matured concept, MAN Truck & Bus will be presenting the new TG vehicles at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012 in Hanover which are destined to inaugurate a new era in MAN's heavy-duty truck series. MAN is in possession of extraordinarily sophisticated technical know-how combined with decades of experience in the development and production of high-performance, cost-saving and environmentally friendly vehicles. With the new TG family, MAN continues to honour its brand promise of consistently offering efficient commercial vehicles for a wide variety of uses and for the most discriminating of demands. This is what MAN's new TGX and TGS stand for while they now also set the benchmark for outstanding energy efficiency, reliability and cost-effectiveness under the Euro VI standard.
Euro VI is coming - the new TGX and TGS remain consistently efficient
Effective January 1, 2014, all newly registered trucks and buses must comply with the Euro VI exhaust-gas standard. This new standard will lower nitrogen oxide emissions by 80 per cent compared to the currently valid Euro V standard and will reduce particulate emission by another 66 per cent. The development of Euro VI engines represents the sum total of MAN's total engineering ingenuity. MAN is synonymous for quality and efficient, mature technology. It therefore comes as no surprise that all technologies incorpo-rated in the new TGX and TGS have stood the test of many years under toughest series-deployment conditions. In the new Euro-VI-compliant heavy-duty series, customers can look forward to receive a comprehensive package of finely tuned technical solutions for maximum transport reliability. Most of the key technologies required to meet the Euro VI exhaust-gas standard, such as common-rail injection, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), selective catalytic reduction (SCR ) and diesel particulate filter (DPF/CRT ), have been successfully used in MAN's series production for more than ten years. For Euro VI, these proven and time-tested components have been sensibly combined and perfectly attuned to each other to make the new TGX and TGS consistently efficient. The core elements of Euro VI technology are the D20/26 EGR engines which have been in use in some 5,000 vehicles on British and Irish roads since 2009. In the Euro V design, these engines have in the meantime run for an accumulated total in excess of 400 million kilome-tres. Euro VI engines made by MAN are virtually emission-free while being on the same high level as Euro V/EEV engines in terms of output, reliability, and efficiency.
For the new TG vehicles, MAN worked hard on compensating for the increase in fuel consumption necessitated by the Euro VI standard. Maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness were the top development principles. As a result, the consumption level is on a par with the already excellent Euro V SCR consumption level. AdBlue® consumption was actually reduced to a significant extent and is now some 50 per cent below that of MAN's Euro V truck. The perfectly harmonised package of technical measures keep the service intervals for TGX and TGS the same at up to 120,000 kilometres in long-distance transport. Moreover, there will be no increase in maintenance or service costs as a result of the Euro VI standard.
And what is more: the new heavy-duty series comes with a significant weight advantage. Thanks to consistent lightweight design, the weight of the system, which is composed of exhaust gas recirculation, two-stage turbocharging, charge-air cooling with air-water main cooler and intercooler and exhaust silencer with CRT filter increases by barely 200 kilograms, depending on the model. It is this design which makes these vehicles the lightest in their class compared to the competition. A number of initial analyses have confirmed that the previous payload benefit of TGX long-haul vehicles over the competition has even been increased for Euro VI.
Stylish and functional - the new TGX and TGS design
Stylishness and functionality - two properties which have traditionally been the hallmark of MAN's heavy-duty series. The vehicle front of the new TGX and TGS was completely redesigned and presents a self-confident and modern look. The company name continues to make its statement in capital letters on the radiator grille. The lion as the unmistakable trademark of all MAN vehicles has been moved to the center of the now even more distinct, highly brilliant chrome-plated trim, radiating high performance and elegance. The combination of an even more dynamically designed radiator grille with the wide-open wind deflectors with visible air conduits has helped to create an all new vehicle front perfectly reflecting the evolution of the TGX and TGS designs. Moving the upper edge of the front flap further down has now exposed the windscreen wiper cover for better visibility. The windscreen wiper cover's design in black serves to visually enlarge the windscreen surface. This has led to an interesting change in proportions of the vehicle's front view while contributing significantly to differentiating the visual impression made by MAN's Euro VI truck. At the same time, however, the vehicles' recognition value has been preserved.
In addition to being visually appealing, the design changes made to the vehicle front also meet the requirements of the Euro VI standard. The modifications have resulted in improved aerodynamics and higher air flow volumes through the vehicle radiator. Wide-open wind deflectors with integrated air conduits serve to optimise the flow of air around the sides. The cooling-air inlets at the vehicle's front have been enlarged to maximise the incoming air flow cross-section and hence to increase engine-cooling performance. At the same time, the air conduit at the radiator grille has been optimised for a more even air flow underneath the vehicle. Aerodynamic optimisations to the A columns, wind deflectors and bumpers help minimise fuel consumption. The vehicle's overall improved aerodynamics hence make an important contribution to keeping fuel consumption down even for the Euro VI standard.
Additional detail optimisations also serve to improve the vehicle's handling for everyday use. The windscreen wipers' exposed position prevents the windscreen wiper system from being affected by ice and snow build-up during the winter season. Its exposure to the wind flow prevents snow build-up. This results in reliable cleaning of the windscreen while improving driving safety by ensuring a clear and unobstructed view of traffic.
Easy to build on and with lots of volume
Another change introduced for the TGX and TGS involves the layout of their frame components. To achieve maximised tank volume in spite of the increased space requirements for exhaust aftertreatment, new single AdBlue® tanks were developed. These tanks have been housed on the left side of the vehicle between the front fender and battery box - either behind the driver's cab or in front of the leading axle. The new access to the working platform on the vehicle's left leads across the tanks. Depending on vehicle configuration, the AdBlue® tank is available with a capacity of between 25 and 80 litres. Depending on vehicle type, customers also get to choose from a large selection of fuel tanks offering a variety of different capacities. The silencer has been positioned on the right. In long-distance transport, mileages of up to 3,800 kilometres can be achieved without refuelling. In addition, the frame clearance can also be used for other add-on components such as silo compressors or hydraulic-fluid tanks, for example. Even in the Euro VI version, space for the bodywork above the frame's upper edge remains free. As far as the body is concerned, all component conflict is ruled out. For special requirements in terms of frame clearance, e.g. for swap-body vehicles, crane tippers or concrete pumps, preparations have been made for shifting the frame add-on components accordingly.
A focus on target-oriented entertainment – the MAN Media Truck Ad-vanced
Anyone travelling on the road for long stretches of time wants to be well en-tertained while driving safely and reliably to his or her destination. The new radio satnav MAN Media Truck (MMT) Advanced combines both aspects while providing top-of-the-line infotainment and route guidance with pinpoint targeting of nearly any destination within Europe. Operation is simple and intuitive thanks to the five-inch touch screen with colour display designed to react fast and precisely to all input. The equipment offers a wide range of new and advantageous functions in addition to the familiar radio functions such as e.g. AM/FM, traffic message channel (TMC), radio data system (RDS) and four-channel audio amplifier. External audio sources (e.g. MP3 player) can be connected to a USB/AUX interface positioned in the right-hand side of the center console, allowing music to be transmitted from the trouser pocket to the driver's cockpit. Additionally, it is possible to play music files saved on a mobile end device on the vehicle's sound system by streaming the audio via the built-in Bluetooth interface. For secure communication, the integrated Bluetooth interface can also be used as a hands-free set for mobile phones.
However, the MMT Advanced positioned in the middle of the center console also serves purposes other than mere entertainment. As a fully-fledged satnav it guides driver and truck securely to their destination. For commercial vehicle-specific navigation, map material on a Micro SD card is now used. This makes it possible to keep playing audio CDs even during route guidance. The infinitely height-adjustable, tilt-adjustable and upward-folding multi-function steering wheel ensures fast and easy operation. The anti-glare displays guarantee a clear view even when hit by direct sunlight. In the new TGX, the MMT Advanced is a standard on-board feature.
The specialist for long distances – the new MAN TGX
The new MAN TGX as the number-one specialist for long distances with its wide variety of models leaves nothing to be desired. Its choice of three different cabs, XL, XLX and XXL, makes the TGX a comfortable companion for demanding transport tasks, both on a national and an international scale. Thanks to its variety of different wheelbases and fifth-wheel heights for Euro-and high-volume trailers, it offers a versatile range of configurations to suit any requirement profile.
The stable, rigid chassis with flexible torsion has no protruding components, making it ideal for mounting bodies. Full air suspension with the bellows posi-tioned far outwards ensures maximum driving comfort and optimum driving safety. Electronically controlled air suspension (ECAS) ensures a uniform driving level, making it possible to lower the TGX by 90 millimetres or raise it by 190 millimetres. A memory function makes it possible to recall two different levels, the control being easy to operate with the tap of a finger. The pneumatic-spring damping system provides for excellent stability during driving even when hauling loads with a high center of gravity.
The efficient six-cylinder in-line engines of the MAN D20 and D26 series in Euro VI standard with their output range of between 360 and 480 hp are the secret behind the optimum propulsion of the MAN TGX. There are two different gearbox variants available for the TGX. The automated MAN TipMatic® transmission with 12 speeds allows a particularly cost-conscious driving style as it automatically selects the most favourable moment for shifting gears. When the standard engine-valve brake is operated, the automated gearbox selects the optimum speed for maximum engine braking power. This cuts down on the wear and tear of the service brake while protecting the drive train from stress exposure. There is also a manual 16-speed transmission available for the TGX. It is possible to combine both transmission types with an intarder. This device offers optimised braking performance in the medium- to high-speed ranges and is therefore perfectly suited for operating speeds between 40 and 85 km/h. Driving comfort is improved as the vehicle's brake force remains uninterrupted by shifting operations. The device furthermore helps relieve the service braking system.
The all-rounder on and off the road - the new MAN TGS
The MAN TGS is equipped to deal with the special demands of traction, local and distribution transport. With its choice of three different driving cab types, M, L and LX, the vehicle is highly versatile with uses ranging from rear-dump truck on construction sites all the way to foodstuff-hauling truck in national long-distance transport. Its low kerb weight makes the TGS the ideal concept for maximum flexibility of operation and optimum gross vehicle weight. In its TGS-TS variant, the vehicle sets new standards, notably in the payload-intensive tank and silo industry. Its weight-optimised equipment makes the TGS the lightest vehicle in its class.
Moreover, the new MAN TGS receives top marks for the outstanding ease with which it allows bodies to be mounted. Even in its Euro VI design, the MAN framework structure permits low-cost superstructure solutions and full use of the loading length. This frame design with its flat top surface means that bodies and equipment can be easily and quickly mounted at low cost. There is no risk of damaging the corrosion protection as there is no need for drilling holes. Clearances at the frame and the interface of the customer-specific control module for external data exchange serve to further enhance the ease with which work can be done on the body. Specific framework dun-nages for a wide variety of bodies are available ex works. Moreover, the low-friction and low-noise hypoid axles and the technically sophisticated chassis make an important contribution to the vehicle's excellent handling. In addition to the tried-and-tested parabolic suspension it is notably the air suspension with the ECAS electronic control which assures a high standard of driving comfort and stability. A manual control unit makes it easy to adjust the load-ing ramp heights to different levels.
In the new TGS as well, MAN common-rail diesel engines of the D20 and D26 series in Euro VI standard do a reliable job and put up to 480 hp on the road. This series also features the automated MAN TipMatic® transmission. For enhanced safety and comfort during off-road use, the MAN TipMatic® is also available with an off-road mode. Tailored specially to the operational profile typical of use on construction sites, it ensures safe and comfortable propulsion on sand, mud, or slopes. Especially vehicles used in distribution or construction-site transport are best served by a combination of MAN Tip-Matic® and MAN PriTarder® as the speeds in these areas are typically low to medium. As an alternative, the TGS can also be equipped with manual 16-speed transmission.
Champion fuel saver even in the Euro VI version – the new TGX EfficientLine
The MAN TGX EfficientLine, a success story in itself, is an outstanding fuel saver even in the Euro VI version and cuts down on CO2 emissions. About 18 months ago, MAN became the first manufacturer to put a truck with un-compromising design for efficiency on the market. Ever since that time, this fuel-saving champion has been a great hit with fleet operators and the inter-national trade press alike, which has been heaping lavish praise on this efficient vehicle: "Fleet Truck of the Year", "Green Truck 2011" or "Irish Truck of the Year 2012" are just a few of the awards bestowed on the TGX Efficient-Line. After extensive vehicle testing, a renowned German trade journal awarded the vehicle the overall grade of "Excellent". In additional to an unrivalled test consumption rate of some 28.7 litres per 100 kilometres, the magazine also gave the vehicle top marks in terms of comfort, engine output, and transmission. It is no coincidence that this model of efficiency has already spawned a number of imitators. Efficiency in transport is becoming an ever more important issue, even in the markets outside of Europe where the significant rises in diesel prices have also been affecting the emerging markets. That is why MAN sees the EfficientLine concept as having a global focus.
For the TGX EfficientLine in the Euro VI version, all efficiency-enhancing features were carried over in order to maintain every advantage in terms of consumption. This means a decrease in consumption by up to three litres compared to non-optimised standard vehicles, even in the Euro VI version. The EfficientLine offering allows flexible adaptation to customer requirements. In addition to the basic model, the two-axle semi-trailer tractor with XLX driver's cab, even the TGX models with three axles, driver's cabs in smaller or larger sizes and different suspension variants are available with EfficientLine packages. MAN also offers EfficientLine packages for use of the TGS in long-distance transport. This allows the combination e.g. of tanker trucks with an aerodynamically optimised tractor.
The market success of the TGX EfficientLine is clearly illustrated by the im-pressive sales figures: since then, more than 10,000 MAN TGX EfficientLine vehicles have been delivered to customers all over the world.
Guaranteed reliable – intelligent driver-assistance systems made by MAN
MAN's new heavy-duty TG vehicles are as cost-efficient as they are safe on the road. That’s because MAN offers a multitude of proven safety systems for the TGX and TGS designed to help prevent accidents and to provide perfect protection for drivers and other road users in cases of emergency. Mirrors and headlights have been designed for maximum visibility in any situation, for particularly low energy consumption, and optimised ambient lighting - optionally available with Xenon technology. In addition, the static cornering light ensures improved visibility in curves. In dangerous situations, the MAN BrakeMatic® with electronic braking system (EBS) including braking assistant cuts down significantly on braking distances. Intelligent driver-assistance and safety systems like the stability program ESP, the lane guard system (LGS) and automatic cruise control (ACC) provide a maximum of safety in everyday use. The continuous damping control system (CDC) prevents the development of rolling or pitching movements in the presence of high centers of gravity. Damping is dynamically adjusted to loads and driving situations to ensure optimised handling.
MAN TeleMatics® with optimised vehicle-deployment analysis
MAN TeleMatics® is the efficient solution for fleet control, management and logistics and ensures economical vehicle deployment and transparent trans-portation processes for the new TG vehicles as well. This benefits dispatchers and drivers alike thanks to improved planning reliability as well as detailed information on consignments and tours. Fleet managers are better able to control the utilisation of their fleets while the administrative tasks at the office are simplified.
The four highly effective service packages MAN TeleMatics® Data Smart, Entry, Data and Dispo allow efficient fleet management to meet any require-ment or suit any purpose. The recorded mass-storage and driver card data can be read out from the digital tachograph (DTCO), transmitted to the MAN TeleMatics® portal wirelessly throughout Europe independently of the vehi-cle's location, and archived. Even the transfer of the data into the existing evaluation software is possible. Use of the remote download is possible from DTCO Version 1.4 on.
One of the most important functions within the MAN TeleMatics® software is vehicle deployment analysis (VDA). Vehicle deployment analysis provides the basic data for optimising consumption and operating costs. Vehicle deployment analysis allows evaluation of the vehicle behaviour or driving quality over a specified period of time. The optimised VDA 2 is now also being used in addition to the familiar VDA 1 to provide an even more detailed and well-arranged display of the data. For a better overview it is now possible to sort the data into columns. Column selection and sorting can be saved as a profile to be reused for future analyses. Another innovation is the use of assessment profiles to calculate the values of the deployment analysis. These profiles distinguish between vehicle ranges (heavy-duty, medium-duty and light vehicles) and type of deployment (long-distance transport, local transport, distribution transport) and are available as standard. Where necessary, it is possible to adapt an assessment profile to suit one's own ideas. VDA 2 additionally offers three new reports. The detailed report is a comprehensive one containing weighted values for a selected period of time. The management report provides a brief overview of the ten most important values from the vehicle deployment analysis. Finally, the fleet report allows a comparison of several selected vehicles over the evaluation period. The scale for evaluating economic efficiency is based on the European energy labelling and analyses vehicles deployment by assigning the letters A through G.
A genuine communication genius - MAN's newly developed DriverPad®. Trips and consignments can be processed in the logistics application, the momentary status being sent to dispatch at a mere click. Addresses for loading and unloading can be entered straight into the integrated truck navigation system, avoiding misunderstandings and circuitous routing. Standard and free text messages on the seven-inch display round off the options available for information exchange. Trailer management has been designed for equal ease of use. Integrated trailer management informs drivers of which trailer have been hitched up or unhitched. That way, the dispatcher is aware at all times of which tractor/trailer combination is on the road and where. Its user-friendliness makes exchanging messages and communication especially convenient, supporting close, almost real-time contact between dispatcher and driver.
Telematics for the trouser pocket with MAN's new TeleMatics® app for iPhones and iPads. This way it is possible to use essential functions even on mobile terminals. The app provides a quick overview of the vehicle fleet and provides reports addressing the most important parameters. In addition, fleet operators receive information on the remaining driving time of the deployed drivers and can efficiently schedule additional tours and deployments even while on the go.
Confidence as standard - extended warranty for the TGX and TGS
The new TGX and TGS come with not only efficiency on board but an extended warranty on the power train as well. This means that as standard, operators continue to receive three years' warranty on the main components of the power train, that is, the engine including the turbocharger, the injection nozzles, selected parts of the injection pump, the transmission, the intarder and the driven axles. The guarantee applies to all TGX and TGS with 4x2 and 6x2 axle configurations. It covers a maximum mileage of 450,000 kilometres and is valid in all EU countries plus Switzerland, Norway, Turkey, Iceland, and Croatia. Excluded are heavy-duty vehicles and trucks with HydroDrive®. MAN thus gives operators a high level of cost control, especially over their long-haul vehicles.

Innovative driving technology for extra traction – the MAN HydroDrive®
To make the new TG vehicles even more flexible and to better adjust them to the various requirement profiles, they can on request be equipped with MAN's new and innovative HydroDrive® system. The hydrostatic auxiliary drive for the front axle is ideal for vehicles which are mainly deployed in road traffic but are occasionally in need of extra traction. Typical examples are driving tipper tractors or trucks delivering building materials into or out of unpaved construction sites. Lumber trucks, fire-fighting vehicles or milk collection vehicles, all of which have to arrive safely on unpaved roads even in inclement weather conditions, also stand to profit from the MAN HydroDrive®. The selectable hydrostatic front axle drive provides extra traction and safety when driving on unpaved surfaces, on slopes and on slippery roads, but doesn't need a transfer case, a front-axle differential or a front drive shaft. This helps to save fuel and decrease CO2 emissions every single day.
The system consists of a hydraulic pump flanged to the gearbox and wheel-hub motors in the front axle. By comparison with a rear-wheel drive truck, a truck equipped with auxiliary HydroDrive® weighs only slightly more; by comparison with a classic all-wheel drive truck, several hundred kilograms less. HydroDrive® vehicles can thus transport greater payloads. The design height remains unchanged, which means: ease of entry similar to that of an on-road chassis, lower height of the top frame edge and the overall vehicle, lower center of gravity and because of this, optimum driving stability. Similarly, the turning circle of MAN HydroDrive® vehicles is the same as for their rear-wheel drive counterparts. HydroDrive® thus expands the operational range of on-road vehicles: for many operators, this renders the acquisition of an additional all-wheel drive truck superfluous.

Two truck series that have not only been continuously in motion since 2005 but have become synonymous with efficiency, economy and great reliability – the MAN TGL and TGM. As haulage trucks in local and distribution transport, in light-duty long-haul transport, on the construction site or in the broad range of municipal applications, with these two all-rounders MAN has set standards in the transport field. Highly thought of by customers because of the many different kinds of operation they're capable of, their consistently lightweight design for maximum payload and their low fuel consumption, sought after by drivers because of their unique handling and outstandingly comfortable cockpits, these series have found a permanent place in an uncounted number of truck fleets. It was therefore no surprise when the MAN TGL was voted "Truck of the Year 2006" shortly after being launched. But what is possibly the best award of them all is reflected by the success of these series on the market: since the start of series production, over 150,000 TGL and TGM vehicles have been sold to customers at home and abroad.
At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012, MAN is now presenting the new TGL and TGM, which will continue the unbroken success story of the light- and medium-duty series from 7.5 to 26 tonnes gross vehicle weight. This means - even with Euro VI - lowest fuel consumption, reduced CO2 emission, maximum payload and an overall package of perfectly attuned technologies. The new design not only causes a sensation on the road but also sets standards in aerodynamics. The new form of the interior convinces with its sophisticated functionality and top-class comfort, using high-quality materials of a standard usually seen only in premium passenger cars. With the evolution of the light- and medium-duty series, MAN is honouring its brand promise of always offering its customers powerful yet economical vehicles, reliable in everyday operation on the road and not only totally convincing but also constantly filling one with new enthusiasm.
MAN continues putting efficiency on the road with Euro VI
Proven engines, matured components and perfectly attuned technologies ensure that the new TG vehicles in the light- and medium-duty series achieve a maximum of efficiency and economy. They don't just meet the Euro VI exhaust-gas standard that comes into effect in in Europe in January 2014 but also achieve top values for payload, fuel consumption and service intervals. At the heart of the Euro VI technology are the four- and six-cylinder engines of the MAN D08 common-rail series: the Euro V and EEV versions of these engines have been installed in around 40,000 vehicles since 2009, proving themselves over millions and millions of kilometres and being improved all the while. The optimally combined technologies comprising exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) with on-demand recirculation rates, the common-rail system with its maximum injection pressure of up to 1,800 bar, two-stage turbocharging (depending on power class), charge-air intercooling (depending on power class) and low-temperature charge-air intercooling (depending on power class) more than compensate for the disadvantages in terms of fuel consumption imposed by the Euro VI standard. In the course of comprehensive series-production and field tests, exact data on comparative consumption has been and continues to be collected. The data shows that the new Euro-VI-compliant MAN TGL and TGM vehicles operate practically emission free and what is more, that they do so with the same power, economy and reliability as in Euro V and EEV.
In Euro VI, the trusted engine technology from MAN with exhaust-gas recirculation is supplemented by MAN AdBlue® exhaust-gas cleaning technology. Despite the opposed physical principles involved in reducing nitrogen oxide and minimising consumption, the consumption of the new Euro VI TG vehicles is at the same very good level as MAN's Euro V trucks. AdBlue® con-umption is a mere two to two-and-half percent of diesel consumption. More-over, the new TGL and TGM vehicles employ the regeneration strategy HCI (Hydro Carbon Injection) as standard. Here, regeneration of the soot filter is ensured, even in engines that operate predominantly under partial load, which is the case in distribution transport and municipal applications, for example. This guarantees that exhaust-gas cleaning will always function, even under the most adverse operating conditions.
In addition, the new TGL and TGM remain light. Consistent lightweight design has kept the increase in weight relative to comparably equipped Euro-V vehicles inherent to the system to a moderate 150 kg for vehicles with four-cylinder engines and approximately 190 kg for those with six-cylinder engines. Also consistent in the new series are the service intervals: thanks to the precise matching of all components, the service intervals for vehicles operating in light- and medium-duty distribution transport remain the same at up to 80,000 kilometres. Furthermore, all TG vehicles are now equipped with maintenance-free PAG batteries.

All-rounders with charm – the new design of the TGL and TGM
MAN's new light- and medium-duty series also exhibit an elegant but at the same time functional design. The exterior underscores the premium character of the vehicles. The eye-catching new design also meets the technical requirements of the Euro VI standard. What strikes one at first glance about the new TG vehicle is the changed front. The lion as the unmistakable trademark of all MAN vehicles has been integrated in the center of the gleaming chrome-plated panel. The functional three-part bumper is easy to repair, while its central section is a different shade of black and withdraws deliberately into the background. A light, dynamically designed radiator grille adds to the visual appeal of the front and the wide-open wind deflectors with visible air conduits reflect power and elegance. Moving the upper edge of the front flap further down now exposes the windscreen wiper system, whose black cover serves to visually enlarge the windscreen surface. This results in an interesting change to the proportions of the vehicle's front view. Stylistic accessories have been rigorously dispensed with. The new design even ex-cels the predecessor models in value while at the same time preserving the vehicles' recognition value.
Improvements to the overall aerodynamics with a positive effect on fuel con-sumption are a result of the new vehicle front. Decisive here are, in particular, the wide-open wind deflectors with integrated air conduits, which serve to optimise the flow of air around the sides. In addition, aerodynamic optimisations to the A columns and the bumpers help minimise fuel consumption. Very practical for day-to-day operation: the exposed position of the wind-screen wipers prevents the windscreen wiper system from being affected by ice and snow build-up during winter. The exposure to wind flow also stops snow adhering. The driver thus always has a clear view of the traffic which translates into greater driving safety. Handles below the windscreen make it safe to climb up, so that cleaning stubborn dirt off the windscreen becomes a simple task.
Easy to build on and with a great range
Deployment of the Euro VI technology necessitated re-arranging the attachments on the TGL and TGM chassis. In spite of this, it was possible to a large extent to retain the proven chassis concept of the predecessor models. Thanks to the new, flat intake-air ducts and the arrangement of the air filter on the rear wall of the C cab, the clearance for bodies and the clearance on the chassis remain almost completely unrestricted. The enlarged exhaust silencer is on the right side of the vehicle as before, where it houses the CRT and the SCR system. The AdBlue® tank is implemented as a single tank and is also located on the right side of the vehicle, between the front mudguard and the SCRT silencer. Placed on top of this is the AdBlue® delivery module. The new layout of the frame attachments is designed to provide the greatest possible range: depending on the type of vehicle, the maximum tank capacity is 2 x 300 litres of diesel and 25 litres of AdBlue®.
The Euro VI version has retained the same, generous body-mounting capa-bility. MAN's chassis structure permits economical body solutions and the full use of the loading length. Space for the bodywork above the frame's upper edge remains free, so there is no conflict when it comes to space for the body. This makes it possible to fully utilise the bodywork space up to the frame top edge. For special requirements in terms of lateral frame clearance, for example for outriggers on crane tippers, preparations have been made for shifting the frame attachments accordingly.
Superior ambience with a sense of well-being – the new interior design
It is not just the aesthetically pleasing design and sophisticated technology of the new TGL and TGM that fill one with enthusiasm, but also their completely new interior concept, which is a convincing one offering a high level of com-fort, functionality and top-class materials. The cab has been adapted to meet the discriminating demands of the driver and presents itself at a standard usually seen only in luxury passenger cars. The interior cladding is in a com-pletely new style: brushed aluminium trim, surfaces of grained plastic and satin-chrome door handles reflect the premium concept in the driver's cab. The door module has similarly been newly designed. A bright champagne silver contrast strip in the middle reinforces the visual impression of a cockpit divided into two sections. The interior door cladding is washable if desired and thus especially easy to clean, as dust and dirt can simply be removed from the cab. The modern, high-class interior leaves nothing to be desired and contributes to a cosy and pleasant ambient. Its new ergonomics result in great overall reliability in that they take the strain off the driver and motivate him or her.
The new instrument panel stands for functionality and ease of operation: it makes an uncluttered impression and is without frills. The heating / air-conditioning panel has been fitted with new control elements and display. Similarly, the toggle switches also have a new design - discreet illumination makes for quick and correct identification of the switches' symbols in the dark. The agreeable night design of all the switches and displays is relaxing, so that the driver can concentrate fully on what is happening on the road when driving after sunset. Furthermore, it ensures that all the control facilities are found without having to be searched for, which eliminates incorrect oper-ation. Controls for the electric window lifters and electrically adjustable exter-nal mirrors are now conveniently located in the door module. In addition, the gear-change console has also been newly designed along with the gear lever and rotary gear-selector switch. Without exception, the rotary switches and light switches are well-formed from an ergonomic point of view and exhibit high-class finishing.
There is plenty of stowage space thanks to the many trays and compartments in the variants without a center seat. Two rubberised trays in the center console below the air vents offer adequate space for securely holding items that are often needed. Optionally, stowage space can be increased with the addition of drawers. The glasses compartment with pen holder beneath the radio can be closed by means of a flap. Optionally, the door module can be fitted with stowage trays beneath the armrests. All these stowage facilities are easy to reach while the truck is being driven and the driver will not be distracted by things rolling and sliding around. A refreshment holder integrated in the door keeps bottles always within reach, while the center console has a cup holder. Special versions of the dashboard are available for cab variants equipped with a center seat. Moreover, as an alternative an additional switch block can also be integrated. The indented central part provides more freedom of movement for the passenger in the center seat of the three-seater variant.
Keeping a cool head on hot day - guaranteed, thanks to the new automatic air-conditioning system. The air-conditioning is overall more effective due to ventilation with optimised, quieter airflow. Distribution of the air has also been improved and is not impaired in any way by draughts. The air-distribution flaps for the heating are now driven by stepper motors, replacing operation by means of Bowden cables. The new design of the air-conditioning display together with its controls makes operation intuitive and the relevant information is always within the driver's field of vision. Effective, quiet and draught-free ventilation extends the length of time during which the driver can concentrate. For even more comfort in all seasons: an air-conditioned seat is optionally available, with a flow of air in the seat cushion and the backrest generating a pleasant warmth or a feeling of freshness.
Mobile concert hall with reliable conductor
Both the new TGL and the TGM are equipped with the MAN BasicLine radio and CD player as standard. The equipment is installed in double DIN format for ease of operation. Besides the usual radio functions, the MAN BasicLine also has an MP3-compatible CD player with title display so that it is no longer necessary to keep having to change disks on longer trips. The GALA function (speed-dependent volume control) keeps the driver's favourite music at the right level, while the HiCut technology suppresses interference and produces a crystal-clear sound. The device is secured against theft by means of a code.
For audiophile users who at the same time don't want to do without accurate, reliable navigation, MAN offers the MAN Media Truck (MMT) Advanced as an option for the TGL and TGM. This combined radio and navigation device is impressive: in addition to the usual radio functions, its powerful four-channel audio amplifier provides pure listening pleasure for music lovers. The optional USB/AUX interface positioned in the center console allows the straightforward connection of an external audio source, such as an MP3 player, for example. Alternatively, music files can be played on the vehicle's sound system by streaming the audio via the Bluetooth interface. For safe communication even while the vehicle is being driven, this also serves as a hands-free facility for mobile phones.
However, the MMT Advanced has even more to offer than top-class entertainment: thanks to its integrated navigation device, driver and vehicle will always arrive at their destination. The five-inch touchscreen not only permits simple, intuitive operation but also significantly reduces the distractions that would otherwise cause the driver to pay less attention to the traffic. So that the driver will not have to do without music even during route guidance, map material on a Micro SD card is now used for the navigation of commercial vehicles. This makes it possible to keep playing audio CDs even during route guidance. The infinitely height- and tilt-adjustable multi-function steering wheel guarantees simplified, convenient operation.
A versatile powerhouse – the new MAN TGL
The new MAN TGL sets the tone in four different weight classes: irrespective of whether they're 7.5-, 8-, 10- or 12-tonners, all the vehicles have in common efficiency and economy. With a particularly low deadweight that makes for high payloads, the truck is predestined for operation in distribution transport and on construction sites. Prepared for bodies of all types, the MAN TGL can be configured precisely as its type of operation requires. All the models have high capacities, low loading edges and dynamic handling char-acteristics. Different wheelbases also allow a great variety of bodies to be mounted, depending on the vehicle's sphere of operation. When it comes to selecting a cab, there is a similarly wide range of different configurations to choose from. The compact C cab with its step board located low down and its wide-opening doors makes getting in and out especially convenient. With the larger L and LX cabs, the TGL shows its strengths in regional and national distribution transport too. If the crew cab is selected, there is space in the truck for as many as seven people (including the driver).
The MAN TGL also offers a wide variety of engines. Powerful, environmentally friendly four- and six-cylinder in-line engines from the D08 series deliver 110 kW (150 hp) to 184 kW (250 hp) and run practically emission-free in their Euro VI versions. With the 220-hp engine, the gross vehicle weight of the 12-tonne TGL increases to 24 tonnes. For even more economical driving, the automated MAN TipMatic® gearbox is available as an option. Thanks to au-tomatic or manual operation by a lever on the steering wheel, the driver is not distracted and can concentrate fully on the traffic. When the engine brake is operated, the gearbox automatically selects the optimum gear for maximum braking performance. Its well-thought-out gear-change concept makes the MAN TipMatic® extremely economical as well, because it reduces fuel consumption and relieves pressure on the drive train. To make things even easier for the driver, there is the integrated MAN EasyStart pull-away assistant, which automatically maintains full braking pressure after the brake pedal is released and until the driver works the accelerator. The MAN TipMatic® is available as a six-speed version for four-cylinder engines and as a 12-speed version for six-cylinder engines. Easy-action six- and nine-speed manual gearboxes are also available.
Two different suspension variants are offered for the MAN TGL. As standard, the vehicle is fitted with the tried-and-tested parabolic-leaf springs with maintenance-free rubber bushings which assure a high standard of ride com-fort and stability. Optionally available air-suspension on the rear axle is es-pecially suitable for the smooth transport of easily-damaged goods. ECAS (Electronically Controlled Air Suspension) ensures that the ride height re-mains the same, regardless of the load. Its external control unit enables exact adjustment to, for example, the different heights of loading ramps.
The changeover to a comfortable four-point mounting with rocker arms has led to significantly better lateral support of the C cab, reducing roll tendency even further. At the rear of the cab, coil springs absorb any radiated vibration. Reduction of the noise level improves driving feel and ride comfort.
Depending on the cab variant selected, there are two attractive equipment packages available for the new MAN TGL. These packages offer genuine savings relative to the price of the components when purchased individually. The "Comfort Ambience Package" includes the following: heated comfort driver's seat, adjustable co-driver's seat, seat covers made from velour, au-tomatic air-conditioning, entry lighting for driver and co-driver as well as a smoker's package. The "Comfort Electrical Package" comprises the follow-ing: central locking, cruise control, heated and electrically adjustable mirror, 12/24-V socket (15 A) on co-driver's side and auxiliary headlights with cor-nering light.
A symbiosis of power and efficiency – the new MAN TGM
Big payloads thanks to consistent lightweight design, big volumes and at the same time exceptional ride comfort: the new MAN TGM impressively combines all these characteristics. In Euro VI too, this series convinces with its broad operational spectrum and the great ease with which it enables bodies to be mounted. Whether as a haulage truck in local and distribution transport, in light-duty long-haul transport, on the construction site or in the wide range of municipal applications, the new TGM in the weight class of 12 to 26 tonnes is compelling on every terrain. To extend its range, its tank capacity has been increased from 180 to 220 litres. The TGM displays its multifaceted strengths mainly as a solo truck and in light trailer operation. For vehicle types this versatile there are naturally several cabs to choose from. The four different cabs - C, L, LX and crew - meet every conceivable requirement and provide plenty of space for the driver plus generously sized stowage trays and compartments.
Driven by efficient, Euro-VI compliant MAN common-rail diesel engines in the D08 series, the trucks can be fitted with units delivering between 184 kW (250 hp) and 251 kW (341 hp). These powerful engines with their 6.9-litre capacity pull away superbly in local and distribution transport while being outstandingly elastic in long-haul operation. For even more comfort and economy, the TGM can be fitted with the automated MAN TipMatic® 12-speed gearbox. A manual nine-speed gearbox is fitted as standard.
Also standard on the TGM are the tried-and-tested parabolic-leaf springs for exceptional ride comfort and stability in day-to-day operation on the road. Maximum cushioning of the cargo is guaranteed by the air-sprung rear axle and optional full air-suspension electronically regulated by ECAS. An external control unit makes it easy to adjust the loading ramp heights to different levels, for example. The chassis can be lowered by 90 mm from the driving level and raised by 190 mm. The vehicle's excellent handling is due in part to low-friction and low-noise hypoid axles - optionally with differential locks - and the technically sophisticated chassis. The steered trailing axle on the TGM 6x2 models makes for great manoeuvrability and reduces tyre wear.
The comfortable four-point mounting with rocker arms provides significantly better lateral support of the C cab, reducing roll tendency even further.
Convincing too are the equipment packages available for the TGM: they make the vehicle even more comfortable in daily use while at the same time offering big savings. Analogous to the TGL, the "Comfort Ambience Pack-age" and "Comfort Electrical Package" are also available for the TGM, depending on the cab selected. The sensible supplementary equipment in the packages adds functionality and upgrades the vehicle.
A feeling of safety in motion and when stationary
Safety is not just writ large for the new TGL and TGM, it's an integral element of both vehicle concepts. For this reason, MAN is now also offering the Lane Guard System (LGS), proven over many years in the TGX and TGM series, as an option for its light- and medium-duty ranges. On long or monotonous stretches, a driver's concentration can start to diminish and micro sleep can set in. The lane guard system assists the driver in keeping to the correct lane. LGS keeps track of the lane markings on the road by means of a video camera positioned behind the windscreen and calculates the position of the vehicle in relation to these lines. If a line is crossed without the turn indicator having been activated, a rumble-strip noise sounds from the loudspeaker on the appropriate side as an acoustic warning. In this way the system helps to prevent accidents, thus improving transport safety, even at night.
Reliable protection in the event of, for example, sudden swerving to avoid an obstacle, cornering too fast or changes in the road surface is provided as standard by the electronic stability program ESP. If there is risk of skidding or tipping, ESP stabilises the vehicle by specifically braking individual wheels and reducing engine torque. Help with braking comes from the electronic braking system (EBS) with braking assistant. For even more braking power, whenever the brake pedal is pressed the engine-valve brake is automatically activated.
Arriving safely at one's destination is important, but feeling unconcerned about leaving your vehicle parked somewhere also adds real value. This is what the four-door central locking system gives you with the crew cab. This system enables separate central unlocking of the driver's door/co-driver's door and/or the rear doors. Equally, all the doors can be locked simultane-ously. The system is conveniently controlled by a transmitter integrated in the vehicle's ignition key. The driver gets visual feedback on execution by the indicators lighting up. The ability to control separate doors remotely is a real plus in terms of convenience for the driver. Sudden and unauthorised entry of persons through the co-driver's door or the rear doors the moment they are open is effectively prevented by unlocking them separately.
MAN TeleMatics® with new vehicle-deployment analysis
Decrease costs and increase productivity: optimum efficiency in fleet management and logistics is also possible with the new TG vehicles of the light- and medium-duty series in conjunction with MAN TeleMatics®. The four highly effective service packages, MAN TeleMatics® Data Smart, Entry, Data and Dispo, are configured to suit exactly the different types of operations for which the vehicles are deployed. The TeleMatics® application combines comprehensive logistics functions with an analysis of the vehicles' technical data and continuous transport monitoring. With its open interface, MAN TeleMatics® can be linked directly to upstream freight-forwarding software.
The new vehicle deployment analysis (VDA 2) provides an even more detailed display of the basic data for optimising consumption and operating costs. This enables vehicle characteristics and/or the quality of the driving to be evaluated over a defined period of time. For greater clarity, the data can now be sorted in columns, saved and subsequently re-used for future anal-yses. Another innovation is the use of assessment profiles which are able to distinguish between vehicle series and can be used to calculate the values of the deployment analysis. VDA 2 additionally offers three new reports: de-tailed, management and fleet reports.
Two more MAN TeleMatics® innovations: the DriverPad® logistics device and the TeleMatics® app for iPhone and iPad. The DriverPad® enables trips and orders to be processed while the dispatcher is always able to keep an eye on the current status. The driver also benefits: s/he can load the orders and trips directly into the truck's navigation system and deal with them one after the other. The seven-inch display guarantees that the exchange of information will be easy for the user. With the new TeleMatics® app it is now also possible to display essential functions on mobile devices. The app provides a quick overview of the vehicle fleet and the drivers' remaining driving time and provides reports addressing the most important parameters. This enables further trips and operations to be planned efficiently even when on the go.
MAN presents the aerodynamically optimised road train of the future

At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012 in Hanover MAN is presenting an aerodynamically optimised road train. In this design study, the MAN Concept S and the AeroLiner trailer from Krone combine to form an exactly fitting, streamlined unit. The vehicle has the load volume of a conventional truck while at the same time achieving the extremely low drag coefficient of a passenger car. This enables savings in fuel consumption and thus CO2 of up to 25 percent.
Against a background of globally increasing demands for energy, continually rising transport volumes and the finite nature of fossil resources, logistics companies, vehicle manufacturers, consumers and politicians are all called on to play their part in reducing CO2 emissions, particularly in the transport sector. The fleet consumptions of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles are already stipulated by law: now, the political discussion is focusing increasingly on heavy commercial vehicles. There are indications that a law regulating CO2 for heavy trucks over 12 tonnes will also be passed in Europe in the near future.
One possible answer to the question of how fuel consumption and the resulting CO2 emission can be reduced significantly and sustainably in long-haul transport is given by MAN together with trailer manufacturer Krone with their presentation of the aerodynamically optimised road train at the IAA 2012.
"The area in which considerable savings in CO2 in the operation of heavy commercial vehicles are to realised can be found in the consideration of truck and trailer together and here primarily in the aerodynamic design of the vehicle as whole. That's where the biggest potential is," says Anders Nielsen, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus.
Until now, the external form of the truck has meant that these vehicles have had to cope with a great amount of air resistance: depending on the route profile, overcoming this resistance requires up to 37 percent of the total energy used by the truck. That costs fuel and results in corresponding CO2 emissions. The rectangular block form of today's trucks is accounted for by the need for maximum utilisation of the space available within the statutory limitation imposed on the length of road trains at 16.5 metres.
The innovative truck-trailer combination makes it possible to tap into considerable aerodynamic potentials. To this end, however, tractor and trailer have to be somewhat longer, towards both front and rear. This is in order to realise the more streamlined front end of the vehicle with its rounded radiator as well as the aerodynamic rear end while keeping the loading capacity the same.
Manufacturers of commercial vehicles are capable of putting an aerodynamically optimised vehicle such as the concept presented here on the road as early as the next vehicle generation. But this can become a reality only when the statutory regulations restricting the length of road trains have been amended. "Politicians could achieve big gains in environmental protection with a minor change to the law while simultaneously utilising the innovative strength of Europe's commercial vehicles industry. 2.30 metres more length would suffice," says Anders Nielsen. The EU Commission has already announced a lengthening of the driver's cab as well as the rear end of the vehicle in its proposed Directive, expected at the beginning of 2013.
By comparison with a conventional 40-tonne train, the MAN Concept S with trailer and optimised auxiliary units reduce fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions per tonne-kilometre by up to a quarter. The development of the aerodynamics took account of the airflow around the train as a whole, starting with the tractor's rounded front section, the reduced area of its mirrors and the streamlined, integrated tanks. In a newly developed concept, the spoiler is integrated in a form-fitting manner into the roof of the driver's cab. It closes the gap between tractor and trailer completely, allowing an even airflow over the vehicle without separation. The trailer's full-size side finishers and tapered rear complete the optimal flow of air around the road train. This has additional synergetic effects: the side finishers enhance safety and also make a contribution to lightening the load on the environment by reducing noise.
With its streamlined front, its projecting wheel arches and the soft, smooth lines of its cab, the MAN Concept S is a radical departure from the cubic design of the conventional trucks we see on our motorways today. The design was rigorously adjusted in the wind tunnel until its extremely low air resistance was attained. With its drag coefficient (cD value) of around 0.3, the concept road train enters a domain of aerodynamic quality previously inhabited only by modern passenger limousines.
"Our Concept S in conjunction with an aerodynamically optimised semitrailer is as streamlined as a modern passenger car. We proved it in the wind tunnel. The savings in consumption are absolutely realistic," states Holger Koos, head truck designer of MAN Truck & Bus.
In the Concept S, the supporting frame and the two fuel tanks are integrated into the external bodywork design, where they help to guide the flow of air past the truck. One would search in vain for conventional rear-view mirrors on the MAN Concept S – their function has been taken over by cameras built into the wing-like mounts for the indicator units left and right. Despite its ta-pered rear end, the road train's loading volume is the same as that of a conventional truck.
A practical development
The development of the Concept S and the AeroLiner focused throughout on the demands of the haulage and logistics sector, where price is critical. Be-sides this aspect, loading and unloading operations are also straightforward and safe. "The semitrailer functions exactly like any other conventional trailer. Despite the streamlined tapering of the vehicle towards the rear, the trailer is suitable for every ramp," explains Krone's head of Sales and Marketing, Dr. Frank Albers. The trailer design meets all the requirements for loading and unloading at ramps and is equipped with a tailgate that can be raised.
More active and passive safety
In addition to its aerodynamically optimised design, the vehicle is also a standard-bearer for cutting-edge technology. The extended cab offers more space for the installation of electronic safety and driver-assistance systems. The lengthening of the cab also makes it possible to integrate high-performance crumple zones that absorb energy in the event of a collision and can thus contribute significantly to reducing the consequences of an accident. The full-size finishers would be optimal side and rear underride guards, so that a train like this would provide greater road safety. Thanks to the rounded front end, the driver has a better view of the area in front and to the side of the cab. A reversing camera mounted on the trailer optimises vision when manoeuvring. Particularly innovative: the rear display integrated in the trailer. Using LEDs visible from a long distance, this provides the vehicles behind with information on traffic jams or danger on the road ahead.
For greater safety in operation and protection against overloading, an on-board system monitors the axle loads and tyre pressures of truck and trailer. Further safety components are dynamic nose-weight reduction and anti-roll control on the trailer.
Concept S and AeroLiner: a sustainable transport solution
What is important today is to set the course so that a considerable reduction in CO2 emission is achievable, from both the technical and commercial points of view. Fundamental to MAN and Krone's joint development of the first integrated complete vehicle was that tapping the potentials offered by aerody-namics at this magnitude is possible at realistic costs to customers, manufactures and consumers. The concept could be realised by vehicle and trailer manufacturers as early as the next truck generation. It has none of the tech-nical and commercial uncertainties that the fully electrical operation of heavy commercial vehicles has, from the perspective of current technological assessments.
In order to fulfil the customer's desire for maximum transport capacity, legislators must change the applicable regulations on dimensions and weights in Directive 96/53/EU so that the potential with regard to the reduction of drag in road trains can be utilised. This would enable improvements in the efficiency of goods transport by road that have so far remained unused, with significant savings in fuel consumption. CO2 savings at this level can only be achieved by an integrated complete vehicle that is aerodynamically optimised while still providing the same loading volume as today's road trains.
MAN Metropolis ultra-quiet and emission-free in the city – progressive heavy-duty hybrid truck concept

In the Metropolis, MAN is showing an extraordinary truck at the IAA 2012. The Metropolis is capable of dealing with heavy-duty transport tasks in the city - without emissions and almost completely without noise. Using power from regenerative sources supplied by a normal socket, the MAN Metropolis drives and works without emitting any CO2. Its energy storage, a lithium-ion battery in modular construction, is located beneath the cab, guaranteeing maximum space for the body, optimal weight distribution and the highest safety levels. A quiet and efficient diesel engine from the Volkswagen Group generates on-board power as needed and functions as a range extender for the heavy-duty truck. The end of this year will see the MAN Metropolis starting a two-year field test as a refuse collection vehicle.
The logistical supply and disposal process in cities is facing new challenges. In future, increasing numbers of people will live and work in cities and meg-acities – metropolitan regions with several million inhabitants. The cities must overcome the challenges presented by a rapid rise in population numbers and simultaneous increases in air-purity and noise-reduction requirements. More and more conurbations are expected to introduce zero-emission zones in future, admitting only vehicles that can travel a defined route ultra-quietly and without generating emissions. Delivering supplies at night, for example, or waste disposal in the early hours of the morning could also help space out the volumes of municipal traffic.
With the Metropolis, MAN in cooperation with Benteler Engineering Services is researching the technical feasibility of a vehicle concept that will meet these future requirements for heavy trucks in an urban environment. To this end, MAN has gone beyond the hybrid approach dominating current thinking for heavy-duty trucks and has instead created a completely new type of drive architecture: The Metropolis is an electrically-powered truck based on an MAN TGS 6x2-4. Its electrical motor outputs 203 kW and drives the truck’s rear wheels via a two-speed automatic gearbox. The auxiliary units such as power steering, air compressor and hydraulic pump as well as the air-conditioning system are also operated electrically and are demand-controlled via the energy-management system, thus saving energy. A colour display in the cockpit informs the driver of the current energy parameters, such as energy recovery, battery status and charge mode. The MAN Metropolis thus offers extremely efficient, environmentally-friendly driving.
Energy is supplied by a modular lithium-ion battery with a maximum capacity of 105 kWh. Thanks to its plug-in function, the battery can be easily and conveniently recharged at the nearest mains socket. Energy storage is arranged beneath the cab, above the front axle, where the diesel engine of a conventional truck is located. The weight of the battery is thus on the front axle so that as before, the rear axles can bear the weight of the body and of the goods being transported. The weight saving achieved through dispensing with a conventional truck engine and gearbox offsets the extra weight of the hybrid system, so that the vehicle has exactly the same payload as the standard MAN TGS 6x2-4.
Thanks to new technologies, the energy density of vehicle batteries is being continually improved. However, batteries will continue to represent a significant weight factor for the foreseeable future. A battery that had to store the entire amount of energy required to operate a heavy-duty truck would take up a considerable part of that vehicle's payload. This is why the research vehicle has a so-called range extender on board. The range extender supplies the battery with electrical energy via a generator whenever it is needed.
The function of the range extender is filled by a modern, compact diesel engine designed for use in passenger cars. In the MAN Metropolis this is a V6 TDI engine from the Volkswagen Group: in conjunction with a generator, this engine ensures the efficient production of electricity. The three-litre TDI engine delivers 150 kW (204 hp). An engine management program is responsible for seeing that diesel engine always runs within its most efficient range in terms of consumption.
MAN Metropolis in hard practical test – as refuse collection vehicle
In order to test the practicality and the economic viability of the vehicle concept, MAN and SITA have chosen one of the toughest types of operation for a heavy truck in an urban environment: waste collection. The Metropolis will be operated, as a fully operational “front-line” vehicle, by SITA in Belgium from January 2013, with rigorous monitoring for a period up to two years.
SITA, a subsidiary of SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT, is one of the leading pro-viders of waste management and recovery solutions and an expert in the waste cycle as a whole. The company aims to offer its clients solutions to collectively build green growth that is more respectful of people and consistent with the circular economy. SITA brings to the project its recent experience in design, development and the operation of low carbon emission vehicles such as the “Full electric collection truck” developed and used by SITA France since 2010. The primary difference between the two designs “Full electric” and Metropolis, is the introduction of a small diesel engine which is designed to act as a range extender by intermittently driving an electricity generator recharging the batteries and when needed, providing direct drive support.
SITA currently utilises several types of alternative fuel vehicles in Europe (Electricity, biodiesel, natural gas). The partnership between SITA and MAN, developed over several years, has allowed this exciting new solution to be brought from the drawing board to reality. Focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by waste collection activities.
In low-noise mode, the MAN Metropolis drives using only electricity; the drive to lift the refuse containers and compress the waste is electro-hydraulic. To make this possible, the MAN Metropolis was fitted with a special hybrid body by Faun: the compression rear loader with lifter was specially designed for fully electrical operation and has a total capacity of 22 m³. Because driving and collecting operations are electrically powered, the noise of operation has been significantly reduced. The MAN Metropolis is way within the usual noise-restriction limits applying in inner cities. This means that operators will in future be able to provide supply and disposal services in the mornings/evenings when traffic volumes are reduced, without disturbing residents or impeding other municipal traffic. The refuse collection vehicles also offer better capacity utilisation.
Electric operation is designed for a full day shift, comprising two cycles each with four hours' collection work and a distance of 15 km in stop-and-go operation. The range extender is used only occasionally during the day shift. Viewing the balance as a whole, from the generation of electricity to the moving vehicle (well-to-wheel), the CO2 savings potential is a very big one: it will be the task of the field test from the end of 2012 on to verify and quantify this potential. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 60 percent compared with a conventional diesel vehicle.
Vision for greater road safety in urban areas
In this project, SITA and MAN are particularly committed to enhance safety and risk prevention. The Metropolis concept vehicle will be equipped with a “Birdview" camera system, which visualises traffic in the vicinity of the vehicle for the driver, from a 360° bird's eye perspective. This system is in itself innovative technology aimed at further enhancing road safety in urban environments and simplifying safer manoeuvring for drivers.
The Birdview system consolidates the information from four individual camera pictures into visual information for the driver. The cameras are attached to the sides of the vehicle in the center. A graphic computer resolves the individual images to a three-dimensional overall image that is able to show various different angles.
The generated image is then displayed on a monitor for the driver. The information supplied by this image supplements the information the driver gets by looking out of the cab and using the mirror. The system automatically selects the viewing angle to suit the driving situation. For this purpose it evaluates vehicle information such as the direction in which it is travelling and its speed. For example, if the driver indicates a right turn, the perspective changes and visualises the area to the front right of the vehicle, where there may be pedestrians or cyclists. The all-round bird's eye perspective is also very useful for manoeuvring in areas where the driver has no clear view.
MAN TGS carries out transport tasks efficiently outside Europe
Adapted EfficientLine package also saves fuel and reduces CO2 emission in MAN TGS vehicles destined for export markets.
The MAN TGS adapted for operation in the export markets has found many satisfied customers in over 40 countries outside Europe, thanks to its ruggedness, its load-carrying capacity and above all, its ability to cope reliably with poor roads and extremes of climate. MAN offers the TGS primarily in the Near and Far East, Africa and Russia. In many instances, the climates there as well as the typical road conditions are very different from those found in Europe. Whether as tractor, chassis or tipper, this truck is ideal for the toughest applications and the hardest transport tasks. The series includes variants with gross vehicle weights from 19 to 41 tonnes. These can be combined with three variants of the comfortable driver's cab.
Premium truck for efficient transport under harsh conditions
If it's an efficient tool for local and long-haul road transport that's needed, MAN offers two- and three-axle semi-trailer tractors and chassis with gross vehicle weights of between 19 and 40 tonnes. The product range also includes a 41-tonne four-axle chassis with the load variants 44 and 50 tonnes. The available axle variants are:
- 4x2 and 6x4 with leaf/leaf as well as leaf/air suspension
- 6x2-2 leaf/air suspension with either single- or twin-tyred trailing axle
- Four-axle vehicle as 8x4 with leaf suspension
For predominantly on-road operation at normal height, these vehicles are fitted with hypoid axles with maintenance-free hub units and disc brakes. Four-bellows air suspension on the rear axle stands for the highest degree of driving comfort and greater driving safety and is easy on the goods being transported.
For off-road operation, MAN offers the TGS at weights ranging from 19 to 41 tonnes in medium-high and high-body design. This provides more ground clearance beneath the planetary hub axles. 4x2, 4x4, 6x4, 6x6, 8x4 and 8x8 configurations are available, all with leaf suspension and big tyres. The TGS 6x4 is similarly available with the 13-tonne four-bellows air suspension that is so well known in Europe
Predestined for heavy-duty operation: the MAN TGS 6x6 40-tonner. With the combination of ZF torque converter clutch (WSK440) and ZF TC-Tronic®, gross train loads of up to 250 tonnes are possible. The equipment necessary for heavy-duty operation is optionally available. This semi-trailer tractor comes in left- and right-hand-drive versions compliant with the Euro III and IV standards and with engines delivering up to 540 hp.
The sum of myriad small details makes the TGS for export markets an exceptionally reliable and economical tool: robust radiator protection with stoneguard, protective grilles on headlights and rear lights, 16-tonne rear axle, air intakes directed upwards with Cyclon filter, radiator suitable for the tropics or arctic equipment for temperatures down to -50°C, stone guards for the fuel tank or 24-inch tyres ensure a vehicle optimally configured to meet the most varied of challenges.
Driven by the economical MAN in-line engines of the D20 and D26 series, outputs of 360 hp to 480 hp are available. Depending on registration regu-lations, the engines comply with the Euro II, III or IV exhaust-gas emission standards. All the engines in the MAN TGS series for export markets are engineered for operation in hot climatic zones. The critical element here is the big radiator located behind the vehicle front. The TGS can even be driven in regions where the lowest temperatures hit -50°C.
The engines are coupled with precise, comfortably shifting transmissions. The 16-speed transmission consists of a splitter group and a range group. Group switches on the gearshift knob fit snugly in the hand and their different shapes prevent confusion. A high level of shifting comfort for bigger payloads, lower fuel consumption and longer clutch life is offered by the automated 12-speed MAN TipMatic® transmission. For vehicles that are to be operated mainly off-road, the MAN TipMatic® is also available with off-road mode, which is distinguished by a gear-change strategy tailored for maximum traction and faster shift times.
Because road-safety issues are continually becoming more important in countries outside Europe, MAN's well-known driver assistance and safety systems such as the lane guard system (LGS) and adaptive cruise control (ACC) are also available for the TGS. Vehicles with 4x2, 6x2, 6x4 and 8x4 axle configurations can also be fitted with the electronic stability program ESP. The high-strength safety cell meets the stringent crash-test requirements of Directive ECE-R29. Moreover, the TGS is also fitted with a seat-belt warning system as standard.
EfficientLine package improves efficiency of MAN TGS for export markets
Efficiency in transport is becoming an ever more important issue, even in the markets outside of Europe where the significant rises in diesel prices have also been affecting the emerging markets. For this reason, MAN is also offering the proven EfficientLine package for semi-trailer tractors with 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 axle configurations in the TGS for export markets. This package reduces fuel consumption and thus CO2 emission, reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO). MAN TGS tractors are fitted with equipment that improves efficiency and has a positive effect on fuel consumption:
- The MAN TipMatic® Fleet 12-speed transmission system including Eco intarder selects the optimal gear-change strategy for reducing consumption.
- MAN daytime driving lights only require about a quarter of the power of a halogen dipped beam.
- The new 120-A alternator is more energy efficient and contributes to fuel reduction with the extra benefit of longer service life.
- The AeroPackage and chassis side trim greatly reduce drag. Adjusting the spoiler correctly and doing away with the sun visor are additional means of saving fuel.
- The aerodynamic optimisation of the cab improves airflow and minimises drag.
- Setting the speed-limiter to 85 km/h reduces driving resistance.
- Compressed-air tank, fuel tank and wheel rims of aluminium plus dispensing with the spare wheel all decrease the vehicle weight and increase the payload.

The sophisticated MAN CLA vehicle concept offers proven technology at competitive prices. The trucks meet all the requirements in terms of the ruggedness and reliability needed under tough and challenging operational conditions. Produced by the MAN plant in India, the vehicles are ideally configured and adapted to the demands of the Asian and African target markets. This combination of technology that is as durable as it is maintenance-friendly makes the MAN CLA a good choice in countries where the service infrastructure is less developed. The equipment is matched to the target markets, enabling optimal, application-specific vehicle configuration ex works. These robust trucks are now being exported via existing MAN sales structures to 25 countries. Since the market launch in 2007, more than 13,000 of these vehicles have been delivered to customers.
The MAN CLA is based on the MAN M 2000L and F 2000 series, which were sold successfully over the course of decades. Two-, three- and four-axle ve-hicles, chassis, tippers and transport mixers are available, as well as chassis for special bodies. Depending on the area of operation, there is a choice of three different cabs for the MAN CLA. The short, functional day cab is suitble for short-haul transport or construction-site operation with maximum utilisation of payload. Ergonomic seats, the adjustable steering wheel, the clearly arranged dashboard, functional switches that are easy to reach and the good panoramic view offer outstanding comfort and functionality. Where rest times are necessary, the medium-length long cab with one bunk and the high-roof cab with two bunks are available.
Adapted to the road conditions and loads typical of the respective country, the MAN CLA has an exceptionally robust chassis and 20- or 22.5-inch tyres. Its leaf-sprung front axle, also specific to where it is operated, can carry six to 7.5 tonnes. The rear axles too – either planetary hub or hypoid – are leaf-sprung and can be configured to carry up to 11.5 tonnes. A high-strength frame modelled for ease of mounting bodywork results in a high payload. The high riding comfort of the chassis is felt convincingly in all situations. The MAN CLA comes with left-hand or right-hand steering.
The vehicles are offered with four-cylinder 180-hp in-line engines or six-cylinder in-line engines of 220 and 280 hp. There is a six-speed overdrive gearbox for the 180- and 220-hp engines, while a nine-speed overdrive gearbox is available for the 280-hp version. These optimally attuned components allow configuration of high-performance drive trains for all vehicles and types of operation up to a total gross train weight of 31 tonnes. Furthermore the vehicles are equipped with a wear-free exhaust valve brake, which both enhances engine braking and lengthens the service life of the service brake.
In 2012 the MAN CLA range will see the addition of buses featuring the major components from the truck range. In a first step the vehicles are set to be designed as two-axle coaches with gross weights of 16 to 18 tonnes and an overall length of eleven to twelve metres. The bus chassis from MAN will be assembled locally by different qualified manufacturers. With an MAN D08 front engine of 220 hp, six-speed ZF gearbox – optionally a VOITH retarder – and leaf-sprung axles, they meet the market demands of a modern drive system. Comfortable and safe, the MAN CLA buses present a robust transport solution for demanding conditions of operation. Target markets are India and a number of regions in Asia and Africa.

MAN Latin America is presenting particularly environmentally friendly transport solutions for the South American market at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012 in Hanover. With this step, the company takes over a leading role on the South American continent in the deployment of sustainable technologies for reducing CO2 emission. Moreover, with the introduction of the TGX range of trucks in Brazil a locally produced truck of the MAN brand is now for the first time being sold in Central and South America. Further synergies between the European and South American commercial vehicles business are also advantageous for the engine: most of the models in the VW Constellation ADVANTECH range are now powered by MAN D08 units.
MAN engine competence in the VW Constellation ADVANTECH range
Developed at the MAN site in Nuremberg and now for the first time being produced in Brazil, the MAN D08 engine has been adapted to fulfil the requirements of growing local markets. It meets the P-7 exhaust-gas standard (comparable with Euro V), which has been in force there since January 2012. MAN PURE DIESEL® technology ensures low emission levels. This technology is based on continuously controlled exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) and does not require any ARLA (Agente Reductor Liquido Automotivo) 32, an additive comparable with the urea solution AdBlue®. This saves weight and installation space, with low fuel consumption being a distinguishing feature. Even at low engine speeds, the MAN D08 engine outputs its usual power. On top of that, it also runs pleasantly smoothly and permits long service intervals.
The interior and exterior of the ADVANTECH range have also been upgraded. The modern instrument panel is equipped with an on-board computer that displays important information about the vehicle in a clear and well-structured form. New colours are available for customising the vehicle's paintwork. The cockpit's new colour scheme combined with more hard-wearing materials fulfils the highest demands in terms of comfort. Various changes to the exterior design of the VW Constellation driver's cabs plus new electronic components decrease fuel consumption while increasing driving safety.
Particular attention has been paid to safety. Vehicles with compressed-air brakes are fitted as standard with a coalescence filter, which makes the de-humidification of the air even more efficient. The service lives of the brake components are longer and the service costs lower.
MAN trucks "Made in Brazil"
MAN continues on its course of expansion with the introduction of the TGX heavy truck range on the Latin American market. The three models on offer in the MAN TGX range output 440 hp and are produced locally in Brazil, being optimised for the specific challenges posed by operating in developing countries. Six million kilometres of testing in Brazil and 200 adjustments to the product have been put into fulfilling the requirements of customers in the growth markets of Central and South America. An investment totalling 40 million euros has been made in local development. The Brazilian development center is located on the premises of the factory in Resende, where in addition an MAN assembly line has also been set up in cooperation with en-gineers from Munich and Nuremberg. Annual production capacity is around 5,000 TGX vehicles. All MAN vehicles comply with the P-7 exhaust-gas standard that recently came into effect. With the premium TGX range, MAN Latin America has expanded its portfolio to cover the segment of ultra-heavy trucks and thereby reinforced its position as market leader in Brazil, a position it has held unchallenged since 2003.
Ideal for medium- and long-haul trips - the MAN TGX 28.440 6x2. This semi-trailer tractor with a maximum gross train weight of up to 70 tonnes can be operated with three-axle semitrailers. The MAN TGX 29.440 6x4 has a maximum gross train weight of up to 80 tonnes. In conjunction with hypoid rear axles, this powerful vehicle is predestined for extra-long combinations con-sisting of a tractor plus several trailers and/or semitrailers. The MAN TGX 33.440 6x4 with planetary-hub reduction rear axles is similarly suitable for long road-train combinations and has a maximum gross train weight of 80 tonnes.
400 million euros invested in sites and new products
At its Resende plant, in the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, MAN Latin America with around 6.500 employees has production capacities for up to 82,000 truck and bus chassis per annum. MAN Latin America is investing the record sum of around 400 million euros in expanding its operative business. This is the biggest investment in the history of the company. The objectives are to meet the growing demand for high-quality commercial vehicles of the MAN and VW brands even better than before and to penetrate new niche markets. At the same time, some of the resources are going into expanding production capacity, developing a new generation of vehicles and new engines and into researching sustainable technologies.
The entire Resende site has been enlarged over the past few years. In addi-tion, an area of more than 1,000,000 m2 in Barra Mansa has been set up for off-road tests. A new sales outlet and a logistics center are being constructed in Porto Real. The establishment of various suppliers in the vicinity of the Resende plant will simplify pre-assembly, logistics and part sales in the region in future.
VW Constellation 24.280 ADVANTECH with hybrid technology in trials
Brazil's best-selling truck, the VW Constellation 24.280 ADVANTECH, is now also being tested with hydraulic hybrid drive. This outstandingly energy-efficient vehicle transforms the kinetic energy released during braking into hydraulic energy by pumping hydraulic fluid into a hydraulic accumulator. This is used to assist the drive when the vehicle moves off again. The truck is thus especially suitable for municipal applications with large proportions of stop-and-go operation. As a sustainable and economical system, the hydraulic hybrid drive reduces fuel consumption.
VW Constellation 26.390 ADVANTECH
The VW Constellation 26.390 ADVANTECH is the most powerful model in the range and offers an excellent cost-benefit ratio. Driven by a 390-hp six-cylinder Cummins ISL engine, this vehicle also meets the P-7 exhaust-gas standard. The injector system with its operating pressure of 1,600 bar results in more precise control of multiple injections during the combustion process. The engine has integrated emission management with SCR technology for exhaust-gas after-treatment using ARLA 32.

The design features of the new Jetliner
NEOPLAN'S authentic design language is evident every which way you look at the vehicle's exterior, and it is this signature design language which gives the Jetliner its distinct character: Design examples include the headlights with daytime running lights which give the bus the confident look of an eagle, the taillights with their characteristic triangular shape, and the tinted window panes which create a distinct contrast to the rest of the vehicle's body.
The signature NEOPLAN Sharp Cut Design has in the meantime become the common denominator of all NEOPLAN models ensuring a high level of recognition and hence the vehicle clear distinction as a premium bus. Clean lines and sharp-cut edges in glass and steel are the accompanying features reflecting the vehicle's uncompromising aerodynamics.
The dark-contoured window surfaces are also used by NEOPLAN as part of the Jetliner's design language. The black roof roundings make the roof look airy and lightweight - a design feature which perfectly underlines the overall' vehicle's buffy proportions. The dark surfaces as a whole are in sharp contrast to the vehicle's distinctive design elements like its forward-sloping B pillar and high-end chrome applications. The Jetliner's vehicle front is distinguished by a panorama windscreen drawn all the way up into the roof, thereby replicating NEOPLAN'S signature cockpit look.
The fairing features the brand's signature sharply outlined clear-glass head-lights. Their technical interior features bevelled circular luminaires focussing sharply on the road ahead. The Jetliner is standard-equipped with LED day-time running lights and cornering lights while bi-xenon lamps are optionally available for the full and dipped beams. The forward-sloping B column integrated in the vehicle's design merges seamlessly with the conically tapered casing of the air conditioning system. This design feature gives the vehicle any dynamically progressive side view.
The design elements of the vehicle's tail end give the Jetliner nothing less than athletic proportions: Powerfully taut surfaces opening up towards the top combine to create a distinct V shape. The trapeze-shaped rear window with its chrome-plated trim panel along the bottom edge is another characteristic design element of the NEOPLAN family. The optionally available reserving camera is integrated in the chrome-plated trim panel. Other distinct signature design characteristics shared with the Starliner and the Cityliner include the shape of the taillights and the outline of the engine compartment flap repeating the outline of the rear window.
Design and comfort level of the vehicle's interior
The interior colour climate familiar from the Cityliner and Starliner has been developed further to demarcate the different functional areas by a switch between dark and light shades. The interior's colour climate with its warm hues provides a friendly and welcoming ambiance while the multitude of bright shades used make the interior feel large and spacious. The feeling of comfort and spaciousness is further enhanced by the large-sized window surfaces and the 2 metres of headroom in the centre aisle. Tastefully placed decorative applications bearing the NEOPLAN logo grace the vehicle's interior.

The Jetliner's standard supplied air conditioning system with its 33-kW output and large cross sections for ample air flows ensures reliable climatisation of the vehicle's interior. Passengers have the option of setting their climate of preference to suit their personal needs via the signature NEOPLAN roll nozzles designed to supply a draught-free supply of fresh air. White LEDs inte-grated in the air nozzle elements serve for lighting passenger seats. The colour climate for night lighting is blue. A 55-litre compressor refrigerator is also standard-supplied with the Jetliner. It is integrated in the dashbard and there-fore easy to access by the tour guide.
Ergonomics and storage space for the trip
The Jetliner comes in a total of four basic designs for optimized configuration of the bus depending on its purpose of use: A particularly agile 12-metre version offers up to 53 seats and 6.7 m³ of boot space, where as the 13-metre version known as Jetliner C offers up to 57 seats and 8 m³ of boot space. Both versions are fourwheelers weighing in at 18 tons of total admissible weight. Both lengths are available in combination with a single-wide or a double-wide door for the rear.
Rapid loading and unloading of passengers is important especially in regular-service operation. In the new Jetliner, the door is installed direct in front of the rear axle. This helps passengers to distribute more evenly over both doors while cutting down on the passengers' route from the rear to the door. This promotes a high level of passenger flow while avoiding congestion. Even the front door has profited from NEOPLAN's special attention and easy entrance and exit - a measure of comfort enhancing both daily service operation and long-distance travel. As an alternative to the standard-supplied tour guide seat we offer an optional comfort version placed further to the rear to create a wider aisle.
If intended for use primarily as comfortable tour bus suitable for long-travel distance, the Jetliner can also be equipped with a toilet and buffet. The seat variant featuring leather trimming with adjustable backrest ensures sophisti-cated seating comfort. To provide more seating space during travelling, the seats on the inside can be pulled out towards the centre aisle. An entertain-ment system with DVD player displays on well-visible 19-Inch monitors both at driver level and in the vehicle's centres. A drawbar or mounting brackets for a ski container serve to further upgrade the vehicle's range of applications e.g. for bicycle trailers or ski trips.
Even if intended for use primarily in daily regular-service operation, the vehi-cle can be custom-equipped to suit the customer's needs: For enhancing the safety of standing passengers, the Jetliner can be ordered equipped with handles and holding rods. Stop call buttons at the holding rods of the luggage compartment are supplied as a standard. Separating walls at the entrance and behind the driver's station guarantee enhanced safety. The selection of available seat models contains a design featuring a fixed backrest and hard-wearing covers for predominant use in regular-service operation. Destination displays on the inside and outside as well as a mounting fixture for a ticket dispenser or the wiring for connection of ticket validators are also available to completely equip the vehicle for regular-service operation. The on-board toilet is available for both length variants and both door variants. Equipped with a narrow rear door and an on-board toilet, the Jetliner offers a maximum number of seats for predominant use in short trips and excursions. Equipped with a wider rear door, the vehicle ensures rapid and smooth passenger flows plus the option of creating either a standing platform or four additional seats with the help of a replaceable platform. A wheelchair lift ensuring safe entrance and exit both during regular service operation and travel is available in combination with the wide double door. Whenever the lift is not in use, it is parked invisibly inside the bottom stair.
Superior drive train to suit any application
For optimized driving comfort, dynamic behaviour and efficiency it is possible to configure the Jetliner's drive train from two different performance-level 10.5-litre MAN common rail D20 Diesel engines, three different axle ratios, and three different gear versions. This ensures optimized torque profiles, low RPMs during long-distance travel, and ideal gear ratios in demanding terrains. The time-tested and continually improved-on components of MAN Truck & Bus's equipment portfolio are a hallmark of guaranteed reliability. The long oil-change intervals of engines, gears, and rear axles translate into low maintenance costs and brief stops at the shop. The core piece of the superior drive train is the famously fuel-efficient horizontal 6-cylinder D20. NEOPLAN offers two performance levels, i.e. 264 kW (360 HP) with a torque of 1,800 Nm and 294 kW (400 HP) with a torque of 1,900 Nm. The Jetliner will be presented in 2012 with the famously efficient and time-tested Euro 5 and EEV technology. The engines achieve this exhaust-gas standard without the addition of AdBlue®. The technology for Euro 6 is already available, and the new Jetliner has been prepared for adaption in due time.
It is possible to order three different gear variants for the Jetliner: 6-speed stick shift, 6-speed EcoLife automatic converter transmission, and the auto-mated 12-speed transmission MAN TipMatic® Coach. Thanks to its low weight, the standard-supplied 6-speed transmission permits maximum pay-loads. The transmission is easy to operate thank to its compact joystick shift positioned right next to the driver's seat.
In cases where the Jetliner's intended focus of use is predominantly on frequent stop-and-go traffic, the 6-speed automatic transmission EcoLife with automatic converter will provide the most efficient solution. The topography-sensitive TopoDyn transmission control automatically activates the most efficient gear-shift program while the vehicle is in operation, basing its selection on the gradient of uphill and downhill stretches. On steep inclines, the "Power" mode makes maximum power available. The Eco mode on the other hand while shift earlier to the fuel-saving higher gears while travelling on even stretches. Lower gear-change speeds lead to lower levels of vehicle noise, which passengers experience as more pleasant. On downhill stretches, the software automatically makes optimum braking power available.
MAN TipMatic® Coach is based on an automated manual gearbox. Both clutch actuation and gear shifting are automated, with a gear shifting strategy optimized for comfortable and fuel-efficient operation in tour buses and com-bined with EasyStart (start-up function) and a sophisticated manoeuvering mode. Thanks to its economically optimized gear-shift strategy, the MAN TipMatic® Coach is a particularly fuel-saving gearbox. In addition, the gear-box makes it possible for experienced drivers to save even more fuel with an anticipatory driving style and manual shifting interventions. And it increases safety: in challenging situations such as e.g. during manoeuvering move-ments as it allows the driver to concentrate on nothing but the traffic.
For the Jetliner, NEOPLAN uses the lightweight MAN hypoid axle, popular for its smooth running and economic operation, for the rear axle. Depending on the intended focus of use, the customer has a choice of three different types of rear-axle transmissions. This makes it possible to custom-equip the vehicle for the individual requirements of predominant vehicle operation (i.e. regular-service operation or tour operation) with an optimized rear-axle transmission and hence a fuel-saving drive train with a low RPM level. Newly developed stabilisers at the front axle provide superior driving comfort. Long cruising ranges are ensured by the standard-supplied large-volume 300-litre Diesel tank which can upon request be supplemented by additional tanks will filling volumes of between 100 an 280 litres.
Premium ambience for daily use: The cockpit
The driver's workstation offers outstanding ergonomic conditions thanks to the cockpit elements known from the “large-sized” NEOPLAN models: The Jetliner provides the driver with easy-to-read, analogous, chrome-fitted circu-lar displays popular from NEOPLAN's top models. A colour display located between the main instruments contains an efficiency display advising the driver of trip data and important vehicle data. The rocker switches in the cockpit have been designed for night operation. The standard-supplied multi-function steering wheel permits operation of the cruise control, intarder, and radio without need of taking one's hands off the wheel. The cruise control is also included in the Jetliner's standard equipment. The cockpit offers the driver the familiar NEOPLAN Premium looks and surface feel – emotion in everyday use: The curved dashboard is designed in two-colours. The TopLine multimedia centre offers integrated navigation functions. The TopLine device simultaneously serves as a perfectly placed monitor for the images received from the reversing camera and the camera located above the second door (both available as extra equipment). A multimedia interface with connection ports for a media player (3.5-mm stereo jack) and iPod is also available. A heatable windscreen is also available, as is a powered roller blind. The climate for the driver's compartment can be set independently of the climate in the passenger compartment. It is possible to open and close both doors separately via a new and innovative radio remote control integrated in the ignition key. The luggage flaps are also locked via the central locking system.
Assistant systems provide for added safety
The new Jetliner offers an impressive package of standard-supplied driver assistant systems. The electronic assistant systems support the driver in his or her high-responsibility driving tasks for a marked reduction in accident risks. Safe braking is the province of the electronic braking system (EBS) with its anti-blocking system (ABS) and braking assistant (BA) as well as BrakeMatic®. In emergencies, the traction control system (TCS) and electronic stability program (ESP) with integrated roll-over prevention allow the targeted deceleration of individual wheels and automatic engine torque reduction to ensure that the Jetliner will remain safely in its lane and on the road even in critical driving situations. The Maximum Speed Control (MSC) speed limiter supports the driver in fuel-saving cruising on motorways. Reifen. Last but not least, the tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPM) reliably prevents tyre damage and the critical driving situations that can occur as a result of sudden loss of pressure in a tyre.
LED daytime driving light and turning light are also equipped in the standard scope of supply. All seats in the NEOPLAN Skyliner are fitted with two-point seatbelts: passengers seated in the more prominent locations are protected by means of three-point belts.
MAN believes in maximum safety on board and for this reason standard-supplies fire alarm systems in all MAN and NEOPLAN brand tour buses. The fire alarm system in the Jetliner rounds off the vehicle's comprehensive safe-ty package and as a standard-supplied feature also monitor the engine com-partment and additional heater. The additional monitoring of main switch panel, boot, and toilet is available as an option. The Jetliner can be addition-ally equipped with a fire extinguisher for the engine compartment and with optical smoke alarms in the toilet.
These safety details make the Jetliner one of the safest compact-sized tour buses in its category – an important argument for bus operators competing for passengers.

The majority of bus operators will additionally increase cost transparency and calculation certainty with a maintenance contract offered by NEOPLAN in four different scopes: From the Comfort package comprising works within the scope of periodic maintenance all the way to the Comfort Super comprehensive package additionally covering all statutory inspection dates and repairs as well as Mobile24 services.
Additional cost certainty is ensured by the warranty extension offerings which can upon request be markedly extended beyond the new-vehicle ex-works warranty. Depending on customer requirement, the purchase warranties for NEOPLAN busses will cover either the entire vehicle or the drive train or specific equipment only. The basic package comprises either a purchase warranty on the entire vehicle or the drive train. In the case of the entire vehicle, the complete coverage provided by the manufacturer's guarantee from NEOPLAN continues uninterrupted. The time frame covers either 24 months without mileage limitation or up to 48 months and a mileage of 600,000 kilometres.
Apart from entire-vehicle warranties, NEOPLAN also offers a warranty ex-tension on the drive train covering the same amount of time. This warranty covers engine, gear, rear-axle and cardan shaft components. The variable building blocks that bus operators can select to supplement the packages provide more flexibility, more certainty and greater cost transparency. These building blocks include e.g. floors, paintwork, coverings, and a variety of equipment.
The warranty extension and service contract extension offerings provide the bus operator with a number of benefits: It allows bus operators to keep an eye on costs and while their budget planning will not be upset by unexpected expenses for repairs. It goes without saying that any repairs that may be necessary will be carried out by NEOPLAN or MAN Service outlets and au-thorised partners using genuine original spare parts.

With the introduction of the EfficientLine concept for the Lion's Coach, MAN continues on its path of uncompromising pre-configuration of particularly fuel-saving models. Coaches have high annual mileages, typically around 100,000 kilometres - in shift operation on regular service considerably more. It is in this specific segment that fuel- and cost-saving measures have particularly big effects.
Decisive for coach operators is the total cost of ownership over the entire service life of the vehicle, including the cost of servicing and repair, tyres and above all, fuel. There are many factors influencing the cost balance of a coach and, closely related, its CO2 efficiency. They're often only small things that go unnoticed in daily operation, but their contribution to the operating costs adds up from month to month day to a considerable amount.
Package of efficiency measures for lower fuel costs
MAN has analysed all the decisive factors involved in particularly efficient driving. Not all the buttons and levers and their effects are that well known. This is why MAN is offering the pre-configured Lion's Coach EfficientLine: this is a model for which all the important factors have been considered and the equipment optimally selected. In its EfficientLine concept, MAN combines technologies, driver information, instruction and training as well as selected services. Together, they have the effect of consistently reducing the total cost of ownership. Experience shows that MAN's initiative as the first commercial vehicles manufacturer to configure vehicles that are particularly effective in saving fuel and total costs is right for the market. Around 10,000 EfficientLine trucks are in already operation for their customers all over Europe. There can be no better proof of the fuel-saving potential and great profitability of these vehicles.
The Lion's Coach EfficientLine
From the outside, the Lion's Coach EfficientLine can be recognised by the characteristic stickers near the driver and the graphic design on the sides of the vehicle. The stickers can be dispensed with if desired. All the colours available for the Lion's Coach are also available for the EfficientLine model. For its interior, all the seat variants, materials and colours of the Coach model family can be selected. The premiere of the Lion's Coach EfficientLine at the IAA 2012 is simultaneously its sales launch. The EEV version can be delivered with immediate effect, the Euro VI version will be available at the end of 2013.
Technologies: power train, weight optimisation, rolling resistance
The Lion's Coach EfficientLine always comes with a fixed power-train config-uration optimised for saving fuel and comprising a D2676 engine, TipMatic® Coach gearbox and Eco hypoid drive axle. MAN offers the coach in three lengths: as Lion's Coach with a length of 12 metres and 49 seats, as Lion's Coach C with a length of 13.26 metres and 53 seats, and as Lion's Coach L with a length of 13.80 metres and 57 seats, all in three-star seating quality.
The specific development of the drive technology and a scope of equipment rigorously designed to save fuel demonstrate that today's long-haul coach transport has the potential to save a considerable amount. MAN has tested the effectiveness of the overall package in comparative test drives that saw coaches in typical operation on motorways and country roads. The basis for comparison by the efficiency experts is the most widespread configuration of the Lion's Coach with six-speed manual gearbox, rear-axle ratio of i=3.36 and 400-hp D20 engine. The figures produced by the test drives demonstrate a fuel-saving potential similar to that of the EfficientLine truck. These savings result solely from the optimised configuration of the Lion's Coach Efficient-Line. The effect of additional driver training has not yet been taken into con-sideration.
The balance shows that with its consistent working out of efficient models, MAN is not only on the right road to greater sustainability but is also a trend setter. Similarly to the EfficientLine truck, whose market launch was accom-panied by detailed data convincingly demonstrating its savings potential in daily routine and on challenging routes, the fuel-saving potential of the Lion's Coach will be certified at the IAA 2012 on the basis of test drives conducted by an independent institute.
MAN ProfiDrive®: efficiency and safe driving can be trained
The driver's qualification and behaviour significantly influence fuel consumption. For this reason, MAN's EfficientLine coach concept also includes the driver. Instructing drivers in the use of the efficiency technologies and training an economical driving style measurably decrease fuel consumption: the experience of the MAN ProfiDrive® instructors shows that professional drivers who have completed economy training courses acquire the lasting ability to drive in such a way that they save up to ten percent on fuel and in addition put far less strain on the vehicle and its load. Primarily, this is due to a for-ward-looking driving style and optimal utilisation of the efficient systems of the coach.
This is why a practically oriented driving course from MAN ProfiDrive® is included in the price of the MAN Lion's Coach EfficientLine package. The two-day training course commences with an introduction to the vehicle. The knowledge imparted here enables the correct utilisation of, for example, the MAN TipMatic® Coach and the options for manual intervention that can be used to advantage by the driver who anticipates. The second day of the course consists of practical training in economical driving. The course included in the package counts towards the certification of advanced training for professional drivers: the time spent in driver training at MAN is thus put to doubly efficient use!
Optimised power train
As a result of the consistent focus of the EfficientLine coach, the total costs of ownership per kilometre are very low. As the CO2 emission per passenger-kilometre, a value particularly relevant to the environment, also clearly shows: at around 12 grams per passenger-kilometre when full and 23 grams when half full, the coach is by a long chalk the means of transport with the lowest per capita CO2 value. The decisive last few percent more in terms of efficiency cannot be obtained just by improving individual components: they are the result of MAN's development competence when it comes to optimising the entire power train.
The Lion's Coach EfficientLine employs a fixed, optimally matched power train configuration. For propulsion, MAN equips the vehicles with the D2676 12.4-litre common-rail diesel engine, which delivers 324 kW (440 hp) and a torque of 2,100 Nm at 1,000 to 1,400 rpm. In combination with an especially fuel-saving Eco hypoid axle and low final-drive ratio (i=3.08), this unit ensures optimal response in all engine-speed ranges and propels the Li-on's Coach EfficientLine with power at low revs. A 12-speed MAN TipMatic Coach® gearbox is similarly a permanent element of the EfficientLine configuration, so at the same time, the vehicle has an intarder. At a motorway speed of 100 km/h, this power train combination results in a decrease in engine speed of around 14 percent by comparison with the combination that has up to now been the most common one in the Lion's Coach (rear axle i=3.36, MAN 400-hp D2066 and manual six-speed gearbox). The lower engine speed contributes to the reduction in fuel consumption and also has a positive effect on the smooth running of the vehicle. The automated TipMatic Coach® gearbox also takes strain off the driver thanks to its automatic selection of the optimal gear, a selection that is based on an efficient gear-change strategy. In addition, the gearbox makes it possible for experienced drivers to save even more fuel with an anticipatory driving style and manual shifting interventions. And it increases safety: in challenging situations such as e.g. during manoeuvring movements as it allows the driver to concentrate on nothing but the traffic.
Rolling resistance: tyre pressure under control at a glance
Rolling resistance is one of the major contributors to the fuel consumption of a vehicle. In the case of a coach travelling at an average speed of 100 km/h, rolling resistance - even in the best-case scenario, with correct air pressure in all tyres - is already responsible for around half of the total driving resistance. This makes it clear: if the pressure in one or more tyres is too low, consumption increases significantly and so does wear on the tyres. This is why the MAN Lion's Coach EfficientLine is fitted with a tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPM) as standard. With this system, it is superfluous to check all six tyres on the two-axle version or all eight on the three-axle version manually, saving the driver a lot of time and effort. The inner of twin tyres in particular is often left out of the regular, daily check. The driver's information display immediately shows gradual losses of pressure. Correct air pressure is also important for getting the longest possible service life out of a tyre. The TPM system reduces the risk of annoying tyre damage due to low pressure by 99 percent.
For its efficiency model coach, MAN specifies that low-rolling-resistance tyres must be fitted all round. Their special carcass structure and rubber compounds reduce flexing work during rolling, thus measurably decreasing fuel consumption. Tyres in the premium segment optimised for front and rear axles respectively unconditionally deliver the performance of conventional tyres with respect to grip and service life.
Weight saving
Lower unladen weight not only permits a greater payload, it also saves fuel every day. Each time the coach is accelerated it requires less energy, every uphill climb consumes less fuel and even on level stretches, the lower weight has a positive effect on rolling resistance and thus on consumption. This is why the Lion's Coach EfficientLine is equipped with aluminium rims, a tyre-pressure monitoring system and a tyre-repair kit that replaces the spare wheel. These weight savings more than compensate for the vehicle's larger dimensioned power train, so that Lion's Coach EfficientLine with 12-speed TipMatic® Coach gearbox and 440-hp D26 engine weighs in at nearly 100 kg less.
Efficient and safe: comprehensive safety package is standard
All the safety systems of the Lion's Coach family are also available for the EfficientLine. The electronic assistant systems support the driver in his or her high-responsibility driving tasks for a marked reduction in accident risks. Safe braking is the province of the electronic braking system (EBS) with its anti-blocking system (ABS) and braking assistant (BA) as well as BrakeMatic®. In emergencies, the traction control system (TCS) and electronic stability program (ESP) with integrated roll-over prevention allow the targeted decelera-tion of individual wheels and automatic engine torque reduction to ensure that the Lion's Coach will remain in its lane and on the road even in critical driving situations. Optional Xenon headlights illuminate the road ahead even better.
MAN believes in maximum safety on board and for this reason installs fire alarm systems in all coaches of the MAN and NEOPLAN brands as standard. The fire alarm system in the Lion's Coach rounds off the vehicle's comprehensive safety package, monitoring as standard the engine compartment and additional heater. For additional safety, the Lion's Coach can be fitted with a fire extinguisher system for the engine compartment and smoke detectors in the luggage compartment, toilet and driver's rest area.

MAN is convinced of the power train configuration and therefore offers its customers an extended guarantee on the components. MAN Lion's City 2012: new product features for greater efficiency and reduced lifecycle costs
For the IAA 2012, MAN has further upgraded its family of Lion's City buses by adding new product features to ensure even greater efficiency, more safe-ty and comfort. These technical innovations lower fuel consumption of city buses even further, whilst also contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions. The savings in consumption achieved average between three and five percent across all engine variants.
The first impression made by these new city buses is their new brand design. The MAN lion on the radiator grille has been made more prominent by being moved into the upper chrome trim. The lion’s silhouette is more pronounced and imparts stronger dynamics. The newly designed emblem is replicated in the interior, for example, on the steering wheel and the ignition key.
All MAN Lion's City buses are equipped with a highly efficient transmission control. During vehicle operation, the topography-dependent transmission control automatically activates the gear-change program that most efficiently navigates the gradient, depending on whether it is on an uphill or downhill stretch. On steep inclines, the Power mode delivers maximum power. By contrast, the Eco mode shifts the bus into the fuel-saving higher gears earlier when travelling on level roads. Lower gear-change speeds cause less vehicle noise, making for a quieter, more pleasant driving experience. On downhill stretches, the software automatically exerts optimum braking power.
Future MAN city buses will feature lighter, energy-optimised air-conditioning systems. The weight saving in solo buses thereby amounts to 60 kg, whilst articulated buses tip the scales at 110 kg less. Optimised ventilation lowers the current drain due to the air-conditioning fan by 10 to 15 percent. On top of that, the new air-conditioning systems are quieter and the air filters have longer service lives.
Optionally, the Lion's City articulated buses can be fitted with a translucent bellows. The large surface area of the bellows lets more daylight into the interior of the bus, thus creating a more pleasant atmosphere and a brighter aisle along the full length between the front and rear of the bus. New, light roof hatches made of safety glass that similarly allow more daylight into the vehicle are optionally available to visually enhance the value of Lion's City solo or articulated buses.
For added safety, all solo buses of the Lion's City family can be equipped with the electronic stability program (ESP) on request. When driving emergencies arise, the system's targeted deceleration of individual wheels and automatic engine torque reduction ensure that the Lion's City remains safely in its lane even in critical situations.
With immediate effect and to sustain value, MAN will be using cathodic dip painting (CDP) on all bus skeletons. The evenly thick coating provides particularly dependable and long-term corrosion protection for the steel frame-work on the outside and for the interior cavities. In the CDP process, paint is applied permanently to the metal by electrical direct current. Moreover, the CDP process is environmentally friendly and low on the use of solvents.
The new sidewall segmenting on MAN’s Lion's City buses helps minimise repair costs and idle times due to slight impacts or minor accidents. Unlike previous models, now only the damaged segment needs to be replaced. This advantage helps local public transport bus companies reduce lifecycle costs.
MAN Lion's City Euro VI: pioneer in environmental protection
MAN has been constantly investing in the further development of the commercially successful MAN Lion's City bus family. Last year, in the Lion's City Euro VI, MAN launched the first city bus worldwide that complies with the mandatory emission standards going into effect on January 1, 2014. This reflects MAN’s commitment to fulfilling the demand of municipal bus companies wishing to put Euro VI buses into service early. MAN Euro VI buses meet the very highest emission requirements for inner city transport and are exceptionally economical at the same time.
The MAN Lion's City Hybrid: rigorous reduction of CO2 in cities
After its highly successful roll-out, the innovative MAN Lion's City Hybrid city bus is already operating in a large number of European communities. These cities provide practical evidence that the serial hybrid technology delivers savings potential of up to thirty percent, along with proof that MAN is putting the economical technologies of tomorrow on the road today. The continual braking and pulling-away at bus stops and traffic lights are exactly the areas where hybrid technology comes to the fore. Whilst conventional buses con-vert their braking energy to heat, the MAN Lion's City Hybrid stores braking energy in ultracaps and transforms it into power for its two electric drive motors. A finely tuned energy management system controls the energy flow and switches the diesel engine off, for example, during overrun operation or when the vehicle is stationary. Secondary energy consumers like the air-conditioner are electrically powered by the energy storage on the roof of the bus. The hybrid city bus thus emits no exhaust gases at bus stops and can pull away noiselessly under purely electrical power. This technology package makes the Lion's City Hybrid the most efficient option when it comes to CO2 emissions and pioneering the future of urban transport. With its serial hybrid drive, the low-floor bus saves up to 30 percent on diesel and CO2. In addition, thanks to its long engine switch-off periods and operation within the ideal speed range, the MAN Lion's City Hybrid achieves even better exhaust gas figures than a conventional EEV-compliant diesel vehicle.
CNG: alternative EEV and Euro VI-compliant drive technology
MAN is the market leader in natural-gas-powered city buses, supplying a range of Lion's City CNG models as solo or articulated buses in lengths from 12 to 18.75 metres. The portfolio also includes chassis for city and intercity buses, and CNG engines from 162 to 228 kW (220 to 310 hp) for external customers. CNG engines and buses from MAN can also be run on treated biogas, which makes operation CO2 neutral. CNG buses also run particularly quietly because combustion in the gas-powered engine, like its petrol-driven counterpart, is initiated by spark plugs and therefore smooth as silk.
With their three-way catalytic converter and lambda=1 control, the CNG engines from MAN meet the Euro VI exhaust-gas standard without additives or particulate filters. However, Euro VI registration for these vehicles, just as for diesel-powered vehicles, also requires the monitoring of in-use-compliance. For registration in accordance with Euro VI, the sensors, actuators and function of the three-way catalytic converter have to be monitored. Starting with the IAA 2012, Euro VI-compliant CNG buses from MAN will go on order and be available in the course of 2013.
Bus Rapid Transit: MAN exhibiting innovative natural-gas BRT bus with energy-saving lighting concept
- Many cities are growing at a rapid pace. So rapidly, that their transport systems are hardly able to keep up. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems enable cities to optimise their transport infrastructures for local public transport relatively simply.
- At the IAA, MAN is exhibiting a BRT city bus with a modern ticketing system and five double doors for exceptionally smooth boarding and alighting, an energy-saving lighting concept and an engine powered by natural gas.
The BRT version of the MAN Lion's City GL is designed for operation on inner-city routes with a particularly large number of passengers. The 18.75-metre articulated bus has five doors in double the normal width - one door more than the standard articulated bus. This ensures that even with a high passenger volume, the flow of passengers is optimal and the stops are very short. In addition, the interior seating architecture has been conceptualised for short distances and time-saving boarding and alighting. The forebody is equipped with folding seats, enabling the driver to react flexibly to passenger volumes and demand for seats by increasing either standing room or the number of seats available. In the rush hour, the driver is able to block the row of folding seats mounted lengthwise in the entrance area of the front doors in order to reserve more standing room. The seating architecture provides 41 seats and standing room for 100 passengers, plus three blockable folding seats. The flexible arrangement of seats and standing room provides more space in the bus in rush hours, for parents with baby carriages, for example, or passengers with shopping carts.
Field tests with the five-door vehicle from MAN and a typical number of passengers showed time savings of around forty percent: the time to board and alight required by forty passengers, for example, was reduced from 26 to 16 seconds. The comparison was made using a four-door bus on the identical route. Furthermore, the trial also showed that the larger the number of passengers, the more time is saved. In modern BRT systems, buses pull into the stops just minutes apart. During rush hours, the time between buses can be even shorter. This makes clear how important it is for the procedure at the bus stop to run smoothly.
Innovative solutions for comfortable interiors
BRT systems also accelerate passenger flow thanks to the simpler and faster purchasing of tickets and more efficient access control. The cashless purchase of tickets at any time of day without having to queue is not just time-saving but far more convenient. The vehicle being shown at the IAA is equipped with a total of nine ticket-validating machines located at the doors and at the driver's workplace. These machines are also able to scan tickets bought electronically by smartphone. This is one of the ways in which BRT systems accommodate the changing habits of many urban bus users.
This also applies to the high-quality, modern design of the interior. The seats have light-coloured shells and are upholstered with a new type of material in carbon-look. The floor covering is white, the side-wall cladding is a high-class mineral black, while the ceiling panels are in a contrasting, lighter colour. Stainless steel was selected for the uprights with the stop-request buttons.
As much natural light as possible together with specific lighting effects generate a pleasant atmosphere for the passengers on board the MAN Lion's City BRT bus. Their subjective perception is one of safety and high quality - this was ascertained in passenger surveys carried out on behalf of MAN dur-ing the "European Bus System of the Future" (EBSF) research project.
The bus is equipped with innovative lighting on its ceiling: four light strips with more than 1,500 LEDs (energy-saving light-emitting diodes) illuminate the compartment, giving it a friendly, evenly-lit look. Two extra bright, pure white LED strips in the center of the ceiling provide the vehicle's basic illumination, while two more LED strips running the entire length of the bus are able to generate defined colours. They act as backlights to ceiling elements made of translucent polycarbonate, whose entire surfaces then take on the respective hue. Cooler and warmer shades in various lighting and weather conditions make it possible to create a pleasant atmosphere in the bus.
The technical implementation of the lighting has a noticeable effect on energy requirements and heat dissipation in the passenger compartment. In the BRT bus, the LED lighting reduces both: the LEDs in the ceiling along the entire length of the bus draw less power, which means that less generator output is required. The driver's workplace, cash desk and entrance are also illuminated by light-emitting diodes. Headlights equipped with LED daytime driving lights and rear lights employing the same technology make additional contributions to energy saving. Having less in the way of conventional lighting also means that the passengers feel more of the air-conditioning system's cooling effect because the LEDs radiate hardly any heat at all into the compartment.
What is more, the driver keeps a very cool head behind the Thermocontrol anti-heat insulation windscreen. The side windows along the entire length are also tinted for heat insulation. Three glass roof hatches allow plenty of natural light into the bus, at the same time permitting an upward view. Moreover, they can be opened electrically for natural ventilation. The articulated bus owes its unique spatial effect to its transparent bellows, which similarly admits daylight.
Sustainable drive technology for BRT buses
The propulsion system of the bus, an MAN E2876 CNG engine that can be powered by either natural gas or biogas, four-speed automatic transmission with SensoTop control and integrated retarder, is synonymous with exceptionally eco-friendly local public transport in cities. The horizontal six-cylinder engine delivers confident acceleration, the front axle with stabiliser ensures the recognised steering precision and the electronically controlled air-suspension system ECAS contributes to the low level of vehicle noise. The gas-powered engine delivers a maximum torque of 1,250 Nm across a very wide band of engine speeds, from 1,000 to 1,700 rpm. With a volume of 2,050 litres, the CNG tanks on the vehicle's roof enable a long operating range.
All the model-refinement measures carried out on the new MAN Lion's City generation, such as the weight-optimised air-conditioning system, segmented side-walls and new electronics structure are also integrated in the BRT version, making this bus an especially efficient vehicle with low TCO for daily operation.
Passenger information and network access
Passengers are increasingly using means of communication on the go, via both mobile radio and WiFi. For this reason, the BRT vehicle offers its passengers a free WiFi hotspot for Internet access.
The objective of a BRT system is to transport as many people as possible from Point A to Point B in the shortest possible time. To achieve this, it is important for the departure times within a network of routes to be coordinated with one another. And it is important that the passengers can obtain information about departure times and connections quickly. This is why the information needed by passengers for changing buses is displayed on big, high-resolution monitors in the bus itself. The display on the front of the vehicle is similarly high-resolution and in colour, giving the bus operator a significantly greater number of visual display options.

MAN competence: Bus Rapid Transit systems
Bus Rapid Transit systems are relatively easy to integrate into existing urban structures. They enable the modernisation of a city's transport infrastructure without the need for extensive construction work on putting in underground lines, for example. This makes them the most efficient local public transport systems by far in terms of their overall CO2 balance, which takes into account the building of the transport infrastructure, the manufacturing of the means of transport and the actual conveying of the passengers. Moreover, BRT systems ensure with a great degree of certainty that passengers will get to their destinations on time: buses are more flexible and can make detours when the unforeseen happens - blocked streets on their route, for example.
The following characteristics are typical of BRT systems to a greater or lesser extent. The backbone is formed by modern city buses with high passenger capacities and interiors whose layouts are optimised so that the flow of passengers is unobstructed. Other possible characteristics are: separate lanes and platform stops where tickets are sold and access is automatically controlled – i.e. before the bus is boarded, in order to optimise the passenger flow. BRT systems also offer intelligent traffic management by, for example, transmission of the current positions of the buses or prioritisation at traffic lights.
The wide range of bus chassis and complete buses from MAN forms an excellent basis for any BRT system. On top of that there is MAN's recognised competence in providing individual vehicle solutions with the reliability that only a major manufacturer of large-scale series can offer. In several Chinese cities BRT routes are serviced by buses made under licence from MAN / NEOPLAN. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, in part on bus-only lanes, buses from MAN / NEOPLAN transport thousands of people smoothly and fast to their destinations every day - MAN and its service partners also ensure the eco-nomical, round-the-clock availability of the vehicles. In 2013, two BRT sys-tems will go into operation in Haifa and Tel Aviv, with more than 170 futuristically designed BRT articulated buses based on 18.75-m MAN floor assemblies for low-floor buses.
MAN Latin America: more than 100,000 buses produced in 19 years
MAN Latin America has a long tradition in the bus market. Over the last 19 years, more than 100,000 bus chassis have been produced in Brazil and sold in over 30 countries in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. The products under the brand name "Volksbus" are manufactured in Resende, in the south of Rio de Janeiro state, where the plant boasts one of the most modern assembly lines for trucks and buses. In the plant's production concept, known as the “Consórcio Modular” (Modular Consortium), seven partner suppliers are directly involved in production on the assembly line itself.
MAN Latin America, currently No. 2 amongst manufacturers on the Brazilian bus market, entered the segment in 1993 with the Volksbus 16.180 CO, a front-engine city-bus chassis. To accompany this model, the company offered a new type of an exclusive after-sales service at the customers’ own workshops. Today, a full range of models is offered, from micro buses to long-distance coaches. Four models are powered by MAN D08 engines, which meet the Brazilian P-7 exhaust-gas standard (comparable to Euro V).
Among MAN Latin America's most impressive sales, a remarkable achievement was the contract concluded with the Brazilian government for the production of 7,000 buses. Over the past five years, these vehicles have been employed in conveying school children nationwide to public schools. In summer 2012, the order was increased and now totals 12,000 vehicles. In 2011, the company set a record for new registrations in Brazil with 11,139 bus chassis (compared with 7,523 units in 2010). Customised solutions are also offered, like an articulated chassis for city buses and off-road buses for unpaved routes such as those in the Amazon region.
Volksbus 9.160
The Volksbus 9.160 is aimed at the minibus market. It is perfect both for regular service in cities and for intercity operation, with convincingly low operat-ing costs. MAN Latin America offers the chassis with two different wheelbases, suitable for bus bodies of up to nine metres in length.
Volksbus 17.230
This chassis is the Volksbus bestseller in the Brazilian market and was specially developed for local public and intercity transport. Equipped with a relia-ble MAN D08 four-cylinder 225-hp engine with low engine speeds, it is distinguished by low maintenance and operating costs. The chassis is suitable for bus bodies of up to twelve metres in length.
Volksbus 17.280 OT with dual-fuel technology
At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012, MAN Latin America is presenting the Volksbus 17.280 OT with dual-fuel technology. The heart of this vehicle is an electronic system that enables the simultaneous control of both natural-gas and diesel injection. This bus is a particularly environmentally friendly solution for local public transport because the emission of CO2 is significantly reduced, especially when biogas is used. Thanks to the dual-fuel principle, the vehicle can be run on diesel alone, which means that it is not restricted to operating in areas with a gas supply.
Development of the Volksbus 17.280 OT with dual-fuel technology is part of the Rio Sustainable Transport Program. Its objective is to ensure more efficient and sustainable passenger transport for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the surrounding region. MAN Latin America deployed similar vehicles for use as shuttle buses at the international Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20 in June 2012.
IAA premiere: MAN presents Euro VI exhaust-gas technology for trucks and coaches

The IAA 2012 will see MAN presenting its Euro VI technologies for trucks and coaches. The premiere of the new generation of TG vehicles is simulta-neously the market launch of the Euro VI exhaust-gas technology. In all its Euro VI diesel vehicles MAN utilises an efficient concept of demand-controlled exhaust-gas recirculation and an SCRT system for exhaust-gas aftertreatment. Also making its debut at the IAA 2012 is the Euro VI technology for CNG buses (natural gas and biogas).
Euro VI from MAN: sophisticated components, new architecture
For its development of the new emission standard, MAN sensibly combined proven technologies and coordinated them optimally with each other. MAN has already been using the key technologies necessary for Euro VI - EGR (exhaust-gas recirculation), diesel particulate filter and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) - in commercial vehicles with great success for several years. SCR technology, for example, has been installed as standard in trucks since 2005. MAN's particulate filter technology CRTec has been in series operation since as far back as the year 2002.
A further reduction in fuel consumption was a primary goal for the developers. The Euro VI vehicles are particularly efficient and reliable transport solutions, just like those our customers are already familiar with in our EEV-compliant trucks and buses with their deserved reputation for economy. This is expressed by the claim for the new truck generation: "Euro VI is coming, efficiency is here to stay." The Euro VI engines are also distinguished by the well-known dynamic characteristics, with power and torque corresponding to the EEV-compliant engines.
Euro VI from MAN: efficient design of the engine and exhaust-gas technologies
For this reason, the most important success factor in the Euro VI development was unifying two goals with opposed physical principles: the reduction of NOx and the reduction of fuel consumption and consequently of CO2 emission. MAN has been able to reduce the fuel consumption of its engines continually over the past few years, while at the same time meeting the ever more stringent requirements regarding nitrogen oxide reduction. For the leap from Euro V / EEV to Euro VI, the MAN developers have optimised injection and combustion with regard to consumption and production of particulate. In the course of the series-production and field tests, exact data on consumption has been and continues to be collected. The Euro VI trucks and coaches will be just as efficient in terms of fuel consumption as the generation of vehicles equipped with EEV-compliant engines. As far as city buses are concerned, the introduction of Euro VI technology has not only decreased emissions significantly but has even reduced fuel consumption by an average of between three and five percent across all the engine variants.
With effect from January 1, 2014 all newly registered vehicles must comply with the Euro VI exhaust-gas standard. By comparison with the Euro V standard, Euro VI requires a reduction of 80 percent in NOx emissions, from 2 g/kWh to 0.4 g/kWh. MAN achieves this with a combination of controlled and cooled exhaust-gas recirculation and an SCR catalytic converter for exhaust-gas aftertreatment. Dividing the workload between the two systems, EGR and SCR, is the optimum solution for low fuel consumption paired with low AdBlue® consumption. Controlled EGR enables low raw emissions of NOx. This in turn means low AdBlue® consumption for NOx reduction in the SCR system. MAN's concept is distinguished by low fuel consumption, low AdBlue® consumption and high reliability.
Compared with Euro VI, the particulate mass has to be reduced by a further 66 percent. In addition, Euro VI stipulates for the first time a limit on the number of particles. The only way to comply with these limit values is by the use of closed particulate filters, which in practice leads to a 90-percent reduction of the particulate mass by comparison with Euro V. This is why MAN combines the SCR catalytic converter with a closed particulate filter, an oxidation catalytic converter and the associated sensors to form the SCRT sys-tem, whose compact dimensions enable it to fit neatly into the silencer.
The reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions required by Euro VI is roughly as much as in all five previous stages of the Euro standard together. In Euro VI, the systems will for the first time have to continuously monitor compliance with limit values in operation ("in-use compliance"). The expanded require-ments regarding the in-use monitoring of NOx necessitate new, more complex vehicle electronic systems and sensor.
Central components of the Euro VI technology
The central components for Euro VI are, on the engine side, common-rail-injection, cooled and controlled exhaust-gas recirculation and two-stage tur-bocharging. These are followed by exhaust-gas aftertreatment by an SCR system with integrated oxidation catalytic converter plus CRT filter (Continu-ously Regenerating Trap). Electronic sensors permanently monitor the absorption capacity of the particulate filter. Also integrated into the SCRT system are the sensors monitoring NOx.
Because the Euro VI standard makes the use of a diesel particulate filter practically unavoidable, the developers had more latitude in optimising com-bustion design and fuel consumption. Common-rail injection functions at pressures of up to 1,800 bar. This system has been standard at MAN since 2002 and the Euro V, EEV and Euro VI engines are already equipped with third-generation CR systems. Only CR systems with their fully-variable injec-tion control enable the physics balancing act required in order to deal with nitrogen oxides, particulate and consumption at every operating point.
Euro VI engines with outputs of 162 kW / 220 hp and up employ a combination of two-stage turbocharging with primary cooling and intercooling of the boost air. The two turbochargers have been combined to form a single com-pact turbocharger module. Each stage is equipped with a waste gate. This makes it possible to control boost pressure and distribution between the two stages so that the energy of the exhaust gas is used most effectively. The high-pressure stage, a small exhaust turbocharger with waste gate, ensures speedy build-up of boost pressure and thus high pulling-away torque in the lower load and engine-speed range. Even at low engine speeds the high air ratio is produced that is required for combustion with low particulate content. In the upper load and engine-speed range, the low-pressure stage ensures the necessary amount of air and is characterised by especially high efficiency, resulting in very good fuel consumption and combustion with low particulate levels. This turbocharging strategy not only helps the Euro VI engines also produce the pulling power at all engine speeds for which MAN is renowned, it is also consciously based on two separate rugged and reliable turbochargers instead of more complex turbochargers with variable turbine geometry. The Euro VI engines in the TGL series delivering 110 kW / 150 hp and 132 kW / 180 hp employ single-stage turbocharging at the same high level of efficiency.
The basic design of the engine and stroke and bore have not changed. Cooled exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) has been in series production at MAN since 2000. The recirculation of cooled exhaust gases makes a low peak combustion temperature possible. As a result, fewer nitrogen oxides are formed. Euro VI utilises electronically-controlled EGR, which ensures considerably improved control performance. Thanks to EGR control with its lambda probe, the optimal EGR rate is set for each operating point of the engine even in dynamic conditions. This guarantees a particularly high level of efficiency and economical fuel and AdBlue® consumption.
The newly developed SCRT system used for exhaust-gas aftertreatment combines an oxidation catalytic converter, a closed, electronically controlled surface particulate filter and an SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue® injec-tion. MAN has been using the particulate filter component as CRTec® filter since as far back as 2002.
AdBlue® has a freezing point of minus 11.5 degrees Celsius. For this reason the tank, the supply lines and the AdBlue® dosing module can be heated, ensuring that exhaust gases are properly cleaned even at low ambient temperatures.
Euro VI legislation means that on-board diagnosis has to provide several more functions; the electronics now has to permanently monitor the emission values. In the event of a fault, OBD informs the driver by means of a warning indicator. In addition and independently thereof, Euro VI legislation stipulates an NOx control system ("anti-tampering"). This system monitors the SCR system, checking that it is supplied with AdBlue® in the specified amount and quality. If this is not the case, a warning is initially output to the driver. This escalates to a reduction of torque, and in a third step to a speed restriction. Beforehand, i.e. also from a cold start and during light-loading operation, the limit values as per the "Worldwide Harmonized Duty Cycles" must be com-plied with. Moreover, the emissions must be guaranteed to be stable for 700,000 kilometres or seven years. This shows clearly just how comprehen-sive the development and product requirements for Euro VI vehicles are.
Simplified, the SCRT system functions as follows. First, an oxidation catalytic converter with a highly efficient precious-metal coating converts the limited constituents of the exhaust gas, HC and CO, to harmless CO2 and H20. The nitrogen oxides are also largely converted from NO to NO2. The surface par-ticulate filter (CRT) that follows traps up to 99 percent of the particulate mass present in the exhaust-gas stream. The soot particles trapped in the CRT filter are catalytically burned using the NO2 produced beforehand and thus converted to CO2. The soot loading on the particulate filter is electronically monitored by sensors. This information helps to control regeneration of the filter. Continuing the process, with the help of the injected reducing agent AdBlue® the SCR catalytic converter reduces the amount of nitrogen oxide to below the Euro VI limit of 0.4 g/kWh.
In combination with EGR and turbocharging, the SCR process enables the engine's combustion to be designed for low particulate levels. This made it possible for MAN's engine designers to also realise consumption-optimised combustion. The nitrogen oxides formed during combustion are then treated by selective catalytic reduction with the help of the additive AdBlue®, which is injected as required upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. The last element that the exhaust gas flows through is an ammonia-blocking catalytic converter. This converts any residual amounts of the reduction agent NH3 (ammonia) necessary for the SCR catalytic converter into nitrogen and water.

Regeneration: highest levels of reliability and safety
In formulating its regeneration strategy for the diesel particulate filter, MAN paid special attention to maximum operational reliability. Regeneration of the particulate filter takes place automatically during normal operation without any action having to be taken by the driver. This permanently running passive regeneration ensures that the particles (carbon C) trapped by the filter material are converted to CO2 and do not clog the filter.
Regeneration in the TGX, TGS and coach is designed to be carried out by a passive SCRT system. In normal driving operation, the system functions at exhaust-gas temperatures at which regeneration permanently takes place. Special regeneration phases or supplementary injection of fuel to raise the temperature are not necessary during normal operation. If the vehicle spends a lot of time idling or is operated in short-distance transport, the system has other modes that enable it to perform regeneration while on the go. Whenever necessary, the "Soft Active" mode uses a secondary-injection function of the common-rail system to raise the temperature of the exhaust gas. This is automatic and does not require any action on the part of the driver. As a further option, the system is able to perform idle regeneration, which can be initiated and ended manually by the driver. Here, the engine carries out a special regeneration program that creates the exhaust-gas temperature necessary for degrading the exhaust-gas particles and regenerating the filter.
The engine variants installed in the TGL and TGM series are fitted as stand-ard with active SCRT systems for regeneration of the diesel particulate filter and are thus optimally equipped to meet the demands of distribution transport. This system also functions in normal driving operation without a special regeneration program, that is, it functions with the available exhaust-gas temperatures. In the event of additional self-cleaning becoming necessary, the system causes the exhaust-gas temperature to be raised in several stages. The TGL and TGM also permit idle regeneration initiated by the driver.
Due to the typical driving cycles in city buses, these vehicles are fitted with fully passive SCRT systems. The Euro VI diesel particulate filter is regenerated at the temperature of the exhaust gas produced by the engine. In every vehicle, an electronic system monitors the controlled process, the protection of the engine and the components of the exhaust-gas aftertreatment system.
Regeneration enables the degradation of almost all particulate while the vehicle is being operated. The residue present after several hundred thousand kilometres can be removed by changing the filter element during servicing. The vehicle's service interval calculator recommends the intervals between cleaning, taking into account the operating conditions and the continually monitored exhaust-gas backpressure. Arrangement and structure of the exhaust-gas silencer are designed for time-saving and thus cost-efficient removal and installation by Service outlets.
Packaging Euro VI diesel for city buses
In 2011, MAN became the first manufacturer to present Euro VI technology for diesel-powered city buses. The MAN Lion's City in the Euro VI diesel version is available unchanged with engines ranging from 184 kW (250 hp) to 265 kW (360 hp). Customers can already order the Euro VI diesel version of the MAN Lion's City: the first vehicles will be delivered at the beginning of 2013. MAN is thus ready for the demand from municipal bus companies wanting to put Euro VI buses into service in good time. The Lion's City solo bus exhibited at the IAA advance press conference is representative of the complete product family of MAN city buses being introduced in Euro VI. They meet the very highest emission requirements for inner city applications and are at the same time exceptionally economical.
The entire Euro VI technology is integrated into the city bus in such a way that not a single seat is lost relative to the EEV-compliant diesel bus. In the city buses, the CRT and SCR catalytic converters are arranged one behind the other in separate boxes. To a large extent, MAN's engineers were even able to retain the weight advantage of MAN city buses with MAN PURE DIESEL® technology: the extra weight of the Euro VI system compared with EEV is around 150 kg. Because most city buses are ordered with air-conditioning, the total extra weight of these vehicles is - in conjunction with the new, weight-optimised aircon system - considerably less. This optimisation also has a positive effect on the weight distribution.
The diesel and AdBlue® tanks on the MAN Lion's City are located on the right side of the vehicle, with the 20-litre AdBlue tank placed next to the diesel tank for ease of operation. Its cap is coloured blue to prevent any confusion.
Features of the Euro VI CNG: exhaust-gas aftertreatment with three-way catalytic converter
The Euro VI standard also applies to CNG vehicles with effect from January 1, 2014. A characteristic of natural gas is that it burns very cleanly by comparison with other fossil fuels, emitting almost no soot. The systemic advantage of natural gas: emissions from MAN's CNG engines are way below the limits set for EEV, currently the most stringent emission standard. The engines' exhaust gases are especially low in nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulates, and that without any complex filtering technology or additives.
CNG engines from MAN meet the Euro VI emission limits by means of a three-way catalytic converter and lambda=1 control without additives or par-ticulate filters. However, Euro VI registration for these vehicles, just as for diesel-powered vehicles, also requires the monitoring of in-use-compliance. For registration in accordance with Euro VI, the sensors, actuators and func-tion of the three-way catalytic converter have to be monitored. Euro-VI compliant CNG buses will be available in the course of 2013.
Natural gas and bio-gas are eco-friendly, economical, future-proof alternatives to conventional diesel power for urban bus companies that are able to use an existing infrastructure to supply them with gas. MAN Truck & Bus is the market leader in natural-gas-powered city buses and offers the Lion's City CNG in a large number of variants as a solo or articulated bus in lengths from 12 to 18.75 metres. The range of products also includes chassis for city and intercity buses and CNG engines from 162 to 228 kW (220 to 310 hp) for external customers.
CNG engines and buses from MAN can also be run on treated biogas, which makes operation CO2 neutral. Moreover, CNG buses are also particularly quiet because combustion in the gas-powered engine, like its petrol-driven counterpart, is initiated by spark plugs and is therefore very smooth. And on top of all that, MAN's gas-powered engines convince with their long maintenance intervals, are easy to service and can be fully diagnosed using MAN-Cats II.
Packaging Euro VI for intercity buses and coaches
With the premiere of its Euro VI technology for coaches of the MAN and NEOPLAN brands at the IAA 2012, CRT filters and SCR exhaust-gas treatment become standard equipment in these vehicles for the first time. Ceramic filter elements with especially large surface areas take over the task of particulate cleaning. Demand-controlled exhaust-gas recirculation is already a tried and trusted technology, having been installed in bus engines to meet earlier exhaust-gas standards.
The new Euro VI exhaust-gas aftertreatment system including the sensors for monitoring NOx and exhaust-gas temperatures as well as the exhaust-gas flow is compact and is completely integrated in the rear silencer. MAN has been able to restrict the extra weight of the additional components required for Euro VI to around 150 to 200 kg for the coach. The heated AdBlue® tanks have a capacity of 60 litres and are located on the right side of the intercity buses and coaches, near the fuel tank on the front axle for easy filling. Its clearly marked blue cap identifies the AdBlue® tank. The volume of the lug-gage compartment is not affected by the new Euro VI technology.
Analogous to EEV, the range of Euro VI engines for city and intercity buses and coaches covers the power spectrum from 184 kW (250 hp) to 371 kW (505 hp).

The Euro VI system in the TGX and TGS series
The new Euro VI exhaust-gas aftertreatment system including the sensors for NOx and exhaust-gas temperatures as well as for monitoring the exhaust-gas flow is completely integrated in the rear silencers of the trucks and coaches. MAN has packaged the Euro VI rear silencer on the right side of the TGS and TGX vehicles. The task of particulate cleaning is taken over by ceramic filter elements with especially large surface areas.
MAN has arranged the Euro VI components in compact form. As has been the case up to now, no parts project above the frame top edge, guaranteeing maximum flexibility for mounting bodies. The AdBlue® tank is a separate, heated tank and is located on the left side of the vehicle. MAN designed the AdBlue® tanks this size so one tankful would provide sufficient range for two tankfuls of diesel fuel. All the variants of the exhaust pipe that have been available up to now will continue to remain available for Euro VI vehicles. The new arrangement of the add-on parts means that the same amount of space on the frame is free for tanks on both sides of the vehicle.
The Euro VI system in the TGL and TGM series
With the advent of Euro VI, SCR is for the first time being installed in TGL and TGM vehicles, where it supplements the proven EGR technology. The basis is formed by the Euro V / EEV engines, which have been produced in series since 2009. EGR with demand-controlled recirculation rate and the common-rail system with 1,800 bar injection pressure are the backbone of the Euro VI system in the engine itself. The power spectrum ranges from 110 kW / 150 hp to 251 kW / 341 hp. Engines delivering 162 kW / 220 hp and above are fitted with two-stage turbocharging and boost-air intercooling.
The TGL and TGM series meet the Euro VI standard by means of a more compact combination of oxidation catalytic converter, particulate filter and SCR, also completely integrated in the rear silencer on the right side. The task of particulate cleaning is taken over by electronically monitored ceramic filter elements.
Free installation space on the right side of the vehicle remains unchanged. The AdBlue® tank is a separate, heated tank and is also located on the right side of the vehicle. The size of the AdBlue® tanks for TGL and TGM is simi-larly designed for two tankfuls of diesel fuel.
MAN TGL and TGM trucks enable outstandingly big payloads even in Euro VI and are among the lightest in their class. The Euro VI system makes the four-cylinder vehicles around 100 kg heavier, the six-cylinder vehicles around 150 kg.

Plus, customers benefit from attractive terms to save money when refuelling. There are also interesting price benefits at the more economically priced B and C filling stations.
Alongside refuelling, the card can also be used to pay tolls and fees for motorways, tunnels and bridges. The VAT refund service is available to customers who often travel abroad.
The MAN ServiceCard also offers customers security against the uncertainties of day-to-day operations. In case of a breakdown, it guarantees quick repair services around the clock via Mobile24, the MAN breakdown service for trucks and buses, and consequently reduces downtimes.
