Balfour Beatty Takes MAN ‘M25’ Gritter Fleet
Balfour Beatty Plant & Fleet Services has supplied a fleet of 27 new MAN gritter units to highways contractor Connect Plus, a consortium of Balfour Beatty, Skanska, Atkins and Egis. The vehicles will operate around the M25, the UK’s busiest motorway.
The delivery comprises 12 TGM 26.340 6x4 BB rigids and 15 TGS 32.360 8x4 BB – all powered by MAN Euro5 engines using EGR technology and all with MAN TipMatic gearboxes.
The bodies are supplied by Aebi Schmidt and include both 9m and 12m, pre-wet and dry salt spreaders.
The vehicles have been specified to meet Balfour Beatty’s ‘Zero Harm’ safety campaign and incorporate many safety features aimed at reducing the risk of accidents, such as:
- Colour coded, high-vis access steps and grab handles to both chassis and body
- Edge protection fitted to all gantries
- Tipmatic gearbox
- additional LED Lighting
- Reversing Camera with infra red and microphone
- GPS-based tracking system
The complete package automates all the key processes and enables the HGV driver to concentrate on the road ahead, without having to worry about gear changes/spread patterns and navigating around routes.
The delivery brings the total of MAN’s for Balfour Beatty to 126 in a total fleet of 700. Balfour Beatty is expecting its latest acquisitions to help keep the M25 free of snow and ice for the next ten years.
"We consider MAN to be the best available whole-life-cost option for winter maintenance vehicles" said Clive Brocklehurst, Commercial Vehicle Operations Manager. “From an engineering point-of-view too, MAN produces a factory gritter specification, so we know MAN’s superior manufacturing quality is built-in.
